SKAGIT MASTER VOLUME 3 Steelhead
Flies Beyond the Books
New Water Media
Skagit Master 3 presents modern concepts in steelhead fly design. No single steelhead pattern is a silver bullet. Confidence in the fly you choose plays a major role in your success. But thinking beyond what you learned in the "how to" books of the past often results in some cool fly concepts.
Skagit Master 3 features a few modern patterns and the steelheaders who tie them: Hannah Belford, Tom Larimer, Eric Neufeld, Jeff Hickman, Ed Hepp and of course Scott Howell, Ed Ward and Jerry French.
Steelhead flies showcased: The Grizzly Bear, Reverse Marabou, Orange Blossom, Fish Taco, Underachiever, Ska-opper and an Ed Ward Intruder.
Skagit Master 3 is much more than a fly tying film: The steelheaders in the show invite you into their world. A series of underwater studies examine light and dark flies in various water and light conditions. A flow tank is used to present each pattern in a controlled environment.
Filmed in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia, Skagit Master 3 is the third production in the five part Skagit Master series. Go To: www.skagitmaster.com to purchase the entire Skagit Master collection.

SKAGIT MASTER VOLUME 2 FEATURING
New Water Media
NEW WATER MEDIA, December 2010
Expected Warehouse Date: January 2011
Subject Category: Steelhead & Salmon Fly Fishing Videos
Binding Type: DVD
Retail Price: $39.99
Filmed in BC and Oregon, Steelheading Outside the Box is the most insightful, technique focused steelhead film in over twenty years. There are no indicators or dead drifted nymphs in this film, just deeply sunk swinging flies jacked by Skagit Flight and Skagit Short shooting heads, wicked looking custom Intruders and water spitting popping bugs chugging behind the latest high tech Scandi heads; it’s steelheading Scott’s way. 120 min
he’s dropping a cone head Prom Dress through 10 feet of cold winter flow
to a short piece of holding water or popping a foam lipped Ska-opper over
a roily boulder patch, Scott knows where fish live and how to make them
respond. Few “How To” films deliver with results.
From the intimate coastal streams of Northern BC to his home waters in Oregon, Scott Howell goes fishing and shares the techniques he developed throughout is career and lands over a dozen wild steelhead in the process. Scott’s philosophy: “If that steelhead intended to eat your fly, it would have”. You shouldn’t worry about the ones that got away or the short strikes, dull pulls and plucks. Enjoy and respect them all. But cherish the ones you get to touch. Skagit Master Volume 2 Featuring Scott Howell is the perfect companion to Skagit Master Volume 1 Featuring Ed Ward.
The film contains a lot of thinking outside the box steelheader stuff, like how to get your fly down through 6-8 feet of fast, cold winter water to resting steelhead. Basalt bedrock rivers like the North Umpqua require different techniques than say, the Skagit, so Scott shows us how to do it. And there’s a lot of classic water fished in a more traditional way.

MASTER Featuring Ed Ward DVD
Skagit Casting is defined as water-loaded casts that incorporate a sustained anchor. These casts give a significant advantage where the angler is confined by the terrain along a river or where very large flies are used. This DVD gives step by step grass casting sequences demonstrating the various Skagit casts, Skagit Double, Perry Poke and C-Spey. There are real world applications of Skagit Casting in actual fishing situations. Ed Ward demonstrates tying an Intruder with Co-designer, Jerry French. There is a section that demonstrates Skagit Casting with Switch rods for trout and other species. Ed discloses his special line splicing techniques. There are special guest appearances by steelhead guides Scott Howell, Mike McCune, Scott O'Donnell and Jeff Hickman. Filmed on Sauk, Skagit, Grande Rhonde and Kanektok Rivers. SPEY TO Z
Finally a DVD that connects a standard overhead cast with Spey, Scandinavian, and Skagit styles of casting. A great DVD for anyone who wants to learn about casting two hand rods. The instructors are Greg Person, Topher Brown, and Way Yin. The video and sound quality are the best available on the subject of casting with a two-hand rod. This is a great all round video for casters of any skill level. One hour plus
Here is what Dr. Way Yin says about this video DVD on: Spey Pages:
"Topher Browne, Greg Pearson, and I are pleased to introduce a new instructional casting DVD: “Spey to Z: Understanding Traditional, Scandinavian & Skagit Style Spey Casting with a Single and Double-Handed Rod.”
| Topher conceived and organized the project nearly two years ago as a
unified presentation of all the major Spey casting styles. The DVD itself
has been in the works for more than 18 months, and we spent nearly a year
working out the script and teaching points in order to take maximum
advantage of the unique capabilities of the DVD format.
From a teaching standpoint we wanted to convey that all fly casting, including Spey casting, is governed by the same fundamental principles. Differences between the three primary styles of Spey casting (Traditional, Scandinavian, and Skagit) simply reflect the adaptation of mechanics to suit specific equipment, which, in turn, reflect specific fishing applications. Because Topher, Greg, and I really enjoy fishing with single-handed rods, we placed single-handed Spey casting up front and center; our goal is to make the transition from a single-handed rod to a double-handed rod as easy as possible.
“Spey to Z” combines much of what we have learned over the years casting, fishing, teaching and demonstrating. We put our own individual spin on what we have learned from all the folks in the U.S. and from abroad that have taught us and inspired us. We hope that an understanding of these principles and how they relate to all fly casts can help anyone improve their casting by recognizing faults and implementing cures based on a grounding in fundamental mechanics.
The DVD was entirely filmed on the Deschutes River in November of 2005, and is sponsored by 3M/Scientific Anglers, Scott Fly Rods, Simms Fishing Products, Maui Jim, and Filson. Jeff Pill (the Art of Spey Casting, Joan Wulff’s Dynamics of Fly Casting) directed the DVD, and Dave Drum was the Director of Photography. Sean Glenn (History Channel, Discovery Channel) and Eddie Howells provided additional camera work. Tom Eichler (History Channel, Discovery Channel) provided the sound, and Steve Lovejoy (Art of Spey Casting, numerous TV shows) edited the DVD. Richard Allen from Track Design provided the DVD authoring.
Proceeds from the sale of the DVD will be donated to various charitable and conservation groups, including the BC Steelhead Society, the Atlantic Salmon Federation, Trout Unlimited, the Native Fish Society, and FFF Youth Casting Programs.

THE ART OF SPEY CASTING
A film by Jeffrey Pilll
Should someone who only fishes a single handed rod be intimidated of the spey cast? If you have ever felt that intimidation then this DVD was made for you. It is packed full of the fundamental ingredients to get you going and will help you comprehend the use of the spey cast with double and single handed rods. This film is hosted by steelhead legend Lani Waller, who narrates and interviews the 17 presenters from 7 different countries. It was filmed from 4 angles in this high quality documented event at the Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club. With so many contributing demonstrations this film seems very redundant in their goal of
the basic aspect of the spey cast. The nice thing about a is the ability
to navigate easily through the different chapters at high speed.
DVD has a bonus scene selection that
includes Mel Krieger, Behind the Scenes, GGACC History, Awards, Casting
Competition, and Sponsors. This is a fun and entertaining part of this
With an introduction and final wrap-up by Simon Gawesworth this film is packed with many of the top casters in the sport. Highlights were the ability to watch the different casting styles from around the world as well as the on stream added footage. Downfall for me was superfluousness of similar concepts displayed. THE PERFECT CAST
by Henrik Mortensen
All fly fishers dream of the perfect catch. This happens through a combination of a perfectly executed cast and the unique ability to fish the fly with ultimate deception. The first step, the art of casting the fly, is the most fundamental building block of a fly fisher who seeks excellence. In this film, you will be exposed to fly casting dynamics from several unique perspectives in camera angles, chalkboard drawings and animations. It will become apparent that Mr. Mortensen is able to deliver remarkable line-speed, distance and accuracy with both single and two-hand outfits. His theories work and they are explained on a novice level. However there are many demonstrations that will make the most accomplished anglers watch this show several times. The fundamentals of the underhand casting techniques popular with Scandinavian salmon anglers is well
|illustrated. The setting is a tour of Iceland's most exclusive and productive salmon rivers. There are many very, very fresh, very wild chrome plated Atlantic Salmon landed during the show. You won't get tired of looking at them. The sound track is easy to listen to, just the right amount of upbeat music and just the right amount of reels singing and bubbly water. Henrik Mortensen loves salmon. You get to know this as the story unfolds. The presentation of tips is very subtle and in many cases you might think that you were merely being entertained rather than instructed. Casting & Fishing Video: 90 minutes, DVD Format|

THE SCANDINAVIAN SPEY CAST II
HENRIK MORTENSEN, December 2009
Subject Category: Casting & General Fly Fishing Tech. Videos
Binding Type: DVD
Retail Price: $39.95
Mortensen expands on the intriguing Scandinavian casting & fishing style he first presented in Spey Cast I. Focuses on efficiently & effectively employing the lift in the case & the art of dry fly fishing. Features 3 fantastic world-class Canadian salmon rivers: the Bonaventure, Petite Cascapedia & Grand Cascapedia. 103 min.
In this volume of the Fly Fishing Academy Henrik Mortensen expands on
the intriguing Scandinavian casting and fishing style he first presented
in volume four. In addition to the overall fishing strategy message, the
two foci of the film are efficiently and effectively employing the lift
in the case and the art of dry fly fishing.
Henrik demonstrates and explains how important the lift is for the cast, and how by doing an alternative cast, which Henrik dubs the Triple C, one can change the lift and direction of the cast. With this demonstration and detailed explanation it is easy to see how important casting techniques are and how they benefit catching results. To add to the intrigue, Henrik employs the use of the highly practical switch rods, which are becoming more and more popular.
And for the first time in his DVD series, Henrik illustrates the seductive and very habit-forming dry fly fishing. It is surreal to watch how a big fish rises from the bottom to swallow an intriguing dry fly drifting on the surface. Remember, the water in these rivers is extremely clear, which only adds to the pleasure of viewing this type of alluring fly fishing.
As in the previous volume, Henrik is back at the three fantastic world-class Canadian salmon rivers of Bonaventure, Petite Cascapedia and Grand Cascapedia. They are magical rivers, hailed as North America's best rivers for Atlantic salmon.
