Boron IIx Series (B2x) rods are unlike anything you've ever fished. Featuring the next generation of high-modulus boron/graphite composite material, they're powerful, responsive, very accurate and have the widest casting range of any rods that Winston offers; you can delicately present flies at 25 feet (or 10') or make casts to 100'. They're also close to an ounce lighter than any comparable size rods now on the market. All unnecessary weight has been eliminate from ferrules, the rods have titanium guides and the new Winston green graphite spacer in the reel seat. This new Winston Series is very "techy". That is this, "The B2x Series uses cutting edge materials-technology to give you cutting edge line speed in a very lightweight, controllable package such as a 12-weight rod that weigh the same as the 7 or 9-weight rod you are fishing with now." Reel Seats: |
| 3 thru 6-weight: Black Anodized Aluminum up-lock with green graphite spacer. |
|
| 3 thru 6-weight: German Silver up-lock with Burl Maple spacer. |
|
|
5 and 6-weight - 9' 6" models:
Black
Anodized Aluminum up-lock with green graphite spacer and cork
fighting butt. 7 thru 12-weight: 12-weight: Black Anodized Aluminum up-lock with green graphite spacer and cork fighting butt. |

Test B2X590! Missouri River, Craig, Montana - October 10, 11,12, 2004. |
|

Reel:
Abel Creek #2 Line: Rio Selective Trout WF5F, Camo Green I fished a variety of rods and lines on this trip. My B2X590 was used exclusively for fishing the daily Baetis mayfly hatch. Some days were calm and extremely delicate presentations were required. During other sessions the weather was blustery and authoritative casts to drive the flies into the wind were required. This rod/line combination worked well under all conditions. However, it was a superb outfit during the calm periods when stealth was more important than power. The Rio Selective Trout line fits this rod very well for fishing waters that are protected from the wind. Of course that isn't always the case. Wind is often a companion on the mighty MO and in the middle of the trip I changed to |
| WF5F Rio Grand. This line is slightly heavier and has a more aggressive taper than the Selective Trout line. It proved to be the magic bullet and will probably remain as my number one "go-to" line with the B2X590 rod. The Abel Creek #2 and T/R #3 reels each balance a B2X590 rod for a very comfortable feel. The more I use this Winston/Abel combination, the better I like it. | |

Test B2X590! Deschutes River, Oregon - June 16, 17, 2004. |

Reel:
Abel T/R #3 Line: Sage Performance Taper WF5F, Light Yellow Patty and I each took a Winston B2X590 rod to the Deschutes River for some mid-season Redside fishing. I loaded my Abel with a Sage Performance Taper and she loaded her Ross with a Rio Selective Trout line. One evening we traded outfits. There was a hatch of Pale Evening Duns coming off and the trout were really on them. We each caught several nice fish from an expansive riffle up-stream from camp. I felt that I could cast further with Patty's Rio Selective Trout line than with my Sage Performance Taper. However I enjoyed the feel of the Performance Taper at normal fishing ranges. |

B2X1290! Loreto,
Mexico - June 28 - July
5, 2003. While on a resent trip to the Sea of Cortez, we got to field test a new prototype #12 rod from Winston. As a matter of fact I was lucky enough to give it a good workout on two Striped Marlin and several large dorado. To tell you the truth it may be the single most impressive fly rod I have ever used . It is made from a brand new Boron/Graphite material that allows the construction of rods that are very powerful and incredibly lightweight. This twelve-weight feels like a seven-weight |

from other manufacturers. It is also is unbelievably strong and durable. With twenty-pound class tippet, a wide fighting belt and a healthy 80-pound fish to pull against; this old fat man can put some serious bend into a fishing rod. I pulled as hard as I can pull and lifted as hard as I could lift and this rod took all I could give it. The action built into the rod is very smooth while playing fish. The casting flex is much harder and faster than what you might expect from Winston, and will appeal to good casters who are physically fit (and the rest of us too). Most of my fishing was done with a |
|
400
grain Rio DeepSea line and 5-inch to 12-inch long flies. I used a Mastery Tarpon
Series floating line briefly one day with medium sized streamers.
It was a nice. I was very impressed with with Winston's prototype
and told them they have a winner an to put it into production without
changing anything. (The above comments were written

We have made several trips back to Mexico and also one trip to the Florida Keys. The pair of B2X1290's has become our favorite marlin/sailfish/dorado/tarpon rods. A 500-grain Rio DeepSea line is used for most of the blue-water work. These rods also perform very well with a 400-grain DeepSea lines and some casters may prefer them for casting "feel". The 500-grain line sinks noticeably faster and will build more line speed if you can control it. However, the best casting line over-all is a WF12 Bermuda Triangle Taper from Royal Wulff. It comes in full floating or with a clear intermediate tip. These lines on a B2X1290 take fly line speed to a whole new level for most anglers. |
