Test Boron II-MX590-4 |
The MX is advertised as 3-ounces. That is a quarter of an ounce heavier than the same model in the BIIX. It is noticeable in the hand, but not uncomfortable. The MX, is still a light rod. In the parking lot, it performed well with a WF5F Shark Skin line at all ranges. This is the kind of five-weight you might use on a bonefish flat, or for fishing streamers for brown trout. With a bass taper line this rod would be good with smaller poppers & hair bugs. This MX model will shine during the salmon fly hatch or any where you fish for trout with medium to large flies and stouter leaders. The BIIX is more of a finesse rod and will remain more popular with anglers who fish smaller flies and lighter leaders. |

Test Boron II-MX890-4 |
Jeff, Josh and I compared this model MX with the same model BIIX in the back lot with a WF8F Shark Skin line. The MX890-4 is 1/4 ounce heavier than the 890-4 BIIX. The MX is much beefier in the butt, but remains a true eight-weight rod. It is impressive, but so is its BIIX contemporary. The 890-4 BIIX has been the most popular rod during our last two shallow-water, saltwater trips. Don't worry an MX890-4 will accompany us to South Andros, next February. |
| Test Boron II-MX1290-4 |
This rod is only 1/8 ounce heavier that the 1209-4 BIIX, but has more muscle for lifting. We have used the 1290-4 BIIX extensively in Mexico for Dorado and Sailfish. It is a very, very good rod. There have been times with larger fish when I had wished for more pulling & lifting power. The MX seems to have substantially more beef without having sacrificed the easy casting stroke. |
