Deer Creek Rods feature beautiful distinctive cork handles and thread wraps.

While some might argue that properly executed Spey casts are the highest form of fly casting, we would probably all agree that these casts are visually compelling, personally gratifying, and a wonderful way to present a fly to a fish. For a collective 65 years, two Pacific Northwest Spey casters, Mike Kinney and Bob Meiser have perfected this art and have shared their knowledge through guiding, teaching, and perhaps most importantly, by designing a new line of Spey rods, the Deer Creek series of two-handed rods. The Deer Creek Series rods have casting properties that marry perfectly with modern Spey lines. They have a unique progressive-regressive traditional action making them ideal for executing all types of Spey and Skagit casts. These blanks are a beautiful translucent dark amethyst color with fittings and components selected by Mike and Bob. Each rod comes with a Cordura covered hard case & sock. Field Test Report

TFO TF 5/6 126 4 DC Deer Creek Rod Report
Jim Sulin, TFO VP of Marketing with a Deschutes steelhead

Had the pleasure of sharing my camp with Rick Pope and Jim Shulin of Temple Fork Outfitters, October 14-16. Evidently Deschutes steelhead have something against Texans because they decided to go into a slump.  Jim finally landed a hatchery steelhead his last morning on the river using a 12 1/2' 5/6 weight Deer Creek rod.  Jim used a CND Gravity Point line.  I had tried the outfit earlier and wasn't very impressed with its performance.  I will have to admit that I don't cast very well with short spey rods and long belly lines as a combination. When Rick and Jim left camp, they gave me the rod. The nice balance and beautiful cosmetics of the rod made it very appealing. On the strength of the reputation of the rod's designers, I knew this rod had to cast better than it had let on. That afternoon I looked through my gear and the lightest line with me was a 460-grain Rio AFS Scandi shooting head set-up on a Ross CLA 5 reel.  The line had a 10' intermediate PolyLeader attached to it.  The set up proved to be useable but uncomfortable.  Thirty casts later the PolyLeader was replaced with a nine foot hand tied leader made from four sections of Maxima.  The change in casting performance was immediate and astounding. Shortening the head to put it in harmony with the short rod made all the difference. The run I was fishing doesn't require long casts, but pin-point accuracy was essential and there was little room for a D-loop. The little rod and short shooting head proved to be the perfect combination for that water. Two steelhead were stuck in quick succession.  The next morning I fished the camp-water where longer casts are needed.  To my surprise the rod/line combination allowed me to be at my best and another steelhead was landed. My opinion of the rod as a fishing tool had changed totally.
It will get a lot more use in the future.

Big steelhead & small Spey rod the componants of fun...

Outfit Specifications:
Rod: TF 5/6 126 4 DC
Reel: Ross CLA 5
Shooting Line: Airflo Miricle Braid
Shooting Head: Rio AFS 460-grain

The outfit rigged this way is very lightweight, but has the butt strength to play most steelhead with reasonable authority. This rod/reel/line combination is very easy to cast and will appeal to anglers of all casting skills.  I fished this rod/reel/line combination off and on during the next 20-days.  Several of my clients also fished it. All seemed to like it, and two clients each bought identical outfits.
