Joe Saracione, is the designer/producer of some of the most cherished custom fly reels ever made. He has gone into production with his new Mark IV American Classic Reel Series. After serious testing on the Deschutes and Sandy Rivers, steelhead have proved to be no contest against the Mark IV.  Steelhead/Salmon sizes feature: easy change right to left hand drive, quick-changeable spools, classic, noisy click/pawl friction plus an adjustable disc drag, fully machined bar-stock construction. And these reels are hand polished for amazing beauty.

I received the very first prototype 4 1/4" reel 09/18/07 and landed a couple of Deschutes steelhead with it the following day.  It wasn't much of a test.  The two hatchery fish were no match.  This reel is really a 9/10/11 in capacity, and its weight and size would be better match with 14' to 15' rods. At that time of year I was fishing the Deschutes and the reel was loaded with a 7/8/9 line and I used it with my 8134-4 Burkheimer rod.  It was too big for the rod, line and steelhead, but the incidents gave me an idea of how the reel would perform. The next tests started in November on the Sandy River with this same reel mated with my 9145-4 Burkheimer rod.  It is a perfect match. So far nine steelhead have succumbed to this outfit with the largest at 38 1/2". This brutish wild buck did test me and the tackle, but once again it proved to be no contest for the Mark IV. The Mark IV is very smooth in operation and the cosmetics and craftsmanship are beyond reproach. It has become one of my most cherished angling possessions. Mark Bachmann

Steelhead/Salmon feature a fully sealed Rulon disc drag with 10-settings, and are easily changed right to left hand drive. Trout Models feature a friction type click-pawl drag system and must be ordered either right or left drive. They are non-convertible.
Saracione Reels are largely hand made in small lots. They are in high demand and sometimes will be out of stock for months at a time. Next Availability: for each model indicates expected delivery date for the next production run. Many models are sold out before they are made. If you want a Saracione MK IV, we will take your order and put you on the list. Reels will be shipped in the sequence that orders are placed.
Much of the Application testimony below was written by world renowned angling authority,
Trey Combs, who has many years experience with Saracione reels.

This model must be ordered either right or left hand wind, and is not convertible. Please indicate whether you wish a fly line to be installed on your reel. Backing line is free with fly line installation.
Application: Saracione's smallest trout model is intended for the lightest lines cast on small waters. If casts are generally -under 30 feet, many anglers choose to go up one line weight to more effectively load the rod. This size Saracione reel has historically been a favorite with fans of bamboo rods in the 6 to 7 1/2 foot range. Graphite rods from 7 to 8 1/2’ with a cigar grip are nicely balanced with this model.

Application: Saracione's most popular trout reel for those anglers fishing quality bamboo rods, and graphite or glass rods with a fuller flex from 7 ½ to 9’. The reel of choice for those anglers fishing small flies and fine tippets on spring creeks.  My size preference for many windy trout environments, those high country lakes and neighboring freestone high gradient streams where fast action 8’-8 ½’ rods are needed to drive lines through contrary winds with pinpoint accuracy.

Application: A big trout, big river model, the 3 ¼” size finds home on waters in the U.S and Canada’s Rocky Mountain west, and the rivers in Argentina’s Patagonia. Meeting more specific needs must include the Deschutes River’s “redside” rainbows, British Columbia’s kamloop trout lakes and her interior rainbow streams, the trophy rainbow and brown trout encountered on Alberta’s Bow River, those spring creek rainbows in central Washington and Oregon, and both Atlantic and Pacific shad runs. Ideal for Klamath and Trinity steelhead and the Rogue’s steelhead above Grant’s Pass.  For use on most of the above mentioned trout, shad, and steelhead waters, I’d select a #5, 9-9 ½’ rod with a relatively fast action. At first inspection, no one would consider this reel for spey rods. However, some super delicate two-handed rods of 10-11 feet in 4-weight are already being built.

Application: The “little giant” of the Mark IV series, this muscle reel’s drag system is identical to those found in all the larger models. For the Alaska-bound angler fishing a 4-piece single-hand rod (easily stored in a float plane), this one reel can meet nearly all of their needs: Trophy rainbows chasing sockeye fry out of lakes, any char of any size, river highways of sockeye salmon; ocean bright chum salmon that collect by the thousands on inter-tidal pools, the Coho salmon that fill “frog water.” For steelhead fly fishers, the reel handles one-year ocean fish of 4-5 pounds, and two-year ocean fish of 6-9 pounds on medium-size rivers. I can confidently put this reel on my 9 ½’ #6 when waking dries for these summer-run steelhead. This combination would work just as well on grilse Atlantic salmon, that one-year-ocean age class dominating the run on some Kola rivers such as the Varzuga. This reel can handle Argentina’s most demanding “boca” fishing for rainbows and browns.

Application: This very husky model is an ideal switch rod reel for 10’to11’ rods, and two-handed rods in the 12’-13,’ range. The “W” handles the greater line capacity spey lines require. I would use such outfits exactly as described above for the N 3 ½”.  For the weak caster, the switch rods fished two-handed overhand, or spey cast if developing skills permit, dramatically increases both distances cast and line controlled. Casting lead weighted rabbit leeches, mousing in the braids, working large wogs on distant riffles for chum salmon are all much easier accomplished when using the longer rods with two hands. This reel, and the 3 ¾”N model, would be a toss-up for fishing Tierra Del Fuego’s rivers for sea-run brown trout.

Application: Many anglers fishing big steelhead waters in British Columbia’s Skeena system will choose either this reel or the 4” model when fishing #9 lines with single-hand rods. However, our market direction was to provide a reel that ultimately compliments 7/8 weight 13’spey rods, a popular combination that anglers cast for both summer and winter-run steelhead on small to midsize waters in the U.S and British Columbia, and, of course, on a number of Canadian maritime rivers for adult salmon. We anticipate that this will become our most popular salmon and steelhead model.

According to Trey Combs: I have a lot of experience with a 4” Saracione salmon reel. Twenty years ago I purchased a Saracione 4” Classic American. I came to fish this reel extensively in Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, and both ends of Russia for Atlantic salmon and steelhead. I should add that the new Mark IV 4” reel is a much larger and more powerful reel than my ancient click only 4” Classic American.
Application: Destined to be an extremely popular size. A great choice to compliment any 14’  9-weight rod.  This outfit will meet a wide range of fishing opportunities: Winter steelhead, summer-run Canadian steelhead on such rivers as the Thompson, Dean, and the many legendary rivers tributary to the Skeena.  Trophy Atlantic salmon rivers in eastern Canada and Russia’s Kola are effectively fished with this combination. Trey landed a number of Alaska’s Chinooks this rod and a Classic American casting 15’ sink-tip Windcutter lines. Sink tips up to at least 250 grains were cast and controlled and salmon to 40 pounds efficiently played and landed. Some anglers casting single-hand rods will choose this reel with a 9/10-weight rods for winter steelhead, Canadian steelhead, and Chinook salmon.

This model is easily converted right to left hand wind. Your new reel will come set up according to your preference. Please indicate whether you wish a fly line to be installed on your reel. Backing line is free with fly line installation.
Application: This reel was designed specifically to balance two-handed rods in the 14’-16’ range. The size accommodates longer, greater diameter spey lines that can, if necessary, loop to sink tip lines of 300 grains or more, combinations used for commanding big water and big fish. Numerous examples exist, but here are a few of the many:  The Skeena below its confluence with the Kispiox River, the Thompson River in the Spences Bridge area, (both in British Columbia), many pools on the Skagit and Sauk rivers in the area of Concrete, Washington; Idaho’s Clearwater, the lower reaches of the Hoh and Quinault rivers in Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, the Yokanga’s mile long Home Pool in Russia’s Kola Peninsula. If a fly fisher makes casts on such waters that are longer than other anglers make, that fly fisher is covering some new water with each cast.
This reel is also an obvious choice for Chinook salmon where 50 pound fish are a regular possibility. That includes great Chinook salmon fisheries from California to Alaska, rivers that must ultimately include Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.
