This is what G. Loomis says about NRX Rods, "NRX is the culmination
of what we have been doing at G. Loomis since day one. We have been
continually striving to build the best rod on the planet. Laminates,
resin, mandrels, components and the know how you expect from us.
These NRX rods look like nothing we have built before. They feel
better than anything we have built before. We aren't talking about a
little better here or a little lighter there... What we are saying so there is no confusion... " This is the Best Fly Rod Ever Built!" Period!! |

When you talk "finesse" in a fly rod it usually refers to trout
fishing, but when it comes to the saltwater scene, the topic quickly
moves towards the flats. There are days when the tarpon are contrary

presentations. This is the rod for those kind of days. NRX makes it
insanely light in your hand and so powerful it will get your
attention - quick! When you want those big silver kings to tire out

When you're fishing big water for salmon and steelhead this is as
good as it gets. It's extremely lightweight, casts like a bullet and
handles big fish exceptionally well. It's hard to imagine a rod so
light can be so tough and have so much power. An excellent rod for
managing heavy sinking lines, shooting heads and sink tips, it will
practically talk to you it's so sensitive. It has exceptional
mending ability and reacts quickly when a big fish does everything
it can do to get away. It generates unbelievably high line-speeds
which really helps when casting in the wind. If you want one rod to
do a lot of things, especially when it comes to managing line and
fighting big fish in tough places, this is the best choice. A great
choice for sea-run browns, big winter steelhead of most of the
salmon species! |

G. Loomis says about this rod: "A smooth, powerful casting 13-footer rated for an 8/9 Scandi head. A 500-grain head it loads this rod perfectly and makes tight narrow loops using the "under hand" cast. At 550 grains, utilizing the Skagit method, it will manage all the necessary tips... full sinking, intermediate or floating. While it casts the new short Scandi-style heads exceptionally well, it's more than capable of handling a wide variety of casting strokes given the proper lines. A wonderful choice for medium to large rivers. It is capable of casting big, weighted flies if necessary, to get down in those deep pockets where salmon or steelhead rest on their migratory journey. NRX gives you unbelievable power and line control in a rod so light it's insane!" |

As two-hand rods get longer, casting distance increases, that's a
given. The beauty of this 14-footer is the NRX dynamics... it's
insanely light, has extraordinary power and handles like a rod much
shorter. It's totally capable of handling heavier heads and is
sneaky quick... a bonus when you want to turn over big, weighted
flies. Big winter steelhead won't go far to chase down a fly so you
have to put it right in their face making accuracy and line control
is everything. Anglers swinging big tube flies on swift Nordic
rivers will appreciate the power of this rod. This rod is dual-rated
in grams for Europe and grains for the North American market. Under
the G. Loomis the standard rating-system this would be a 9/10. This
is a great all-around two-hand rod! |

When maximum distance is your goal this is the rod you want in your hands. Even in tough conditions... wind, rain and high water, you need a big rod, but one that doesn't wear you out. You need a rod that can cover the water, control the swing and still be manageable. It's hard to imagine a 15-foot rod that can be characterized as manageable, but this one does all that and more. Thanks to NRX technology, this is the big, Mac-Daddy of the G. Loomis NRX two-hand rods. It has unbelievable line control, capable of handling long 45' heads as well as large, air-resistant tube flies on the big rivers of Scandinavia and gives you total coverage in the deep, fast runs these fish call home. Under the standard rating-system this would be a 10/11. As impressed as you may already be with G. Loomis GLX two-handers, this one is so light and powerful it will blow you away!! | Carron lines have dominated Spey Casting
Distance Competitions through the last decade. The Carron Team has more
World Championships than all other teams put together. Carron's unique
insights into "Competition Fly Line Design" gives them an advantage for
building fishing lines as well. You can only catch what you can reach.
Carron lines are a perfect fit for many North American, as well as
Eurasian fishing applications. Local anglers will find that Carron Lines
are perfect for floating line fisheries, such as the Deschutes, John Day
and Clear Water Rivers. The unique coating of their Jetstream lines gives the angler a supple, smooth-running and memory free line that flows with ease and guarantees perfect presentation with every cast. The angler also has the added comfort in that the extra length in the line allows him to play a fish in the knowledge that he does not have to worry about backing and knots causing extra friction in the rod guides.

American Spey line designations are viewed as being slightly different than the rest of the world. We here in the Americas are known for putting heavy lines and heavy line weights on our Spey rods, so the Carron 8/9 would be more like and American 7/8. A great feature of the Carron line family is that they are made to be fine tuned and customized by the fisherman. For the most part, these lines fit perfectly on 13' and longer rods. In today's market there are many 12' and 12'6" #5-#7 rods in use. Carron lines can be altered to fit these sizes of rods too. Please call Travis for advice. Millions of salmon spawn in the rivers of the Pacific Northwest,
British Columbia, Alaska and the Great Lakes Region. These eggs
become the food for many species of game fish. Egg flies are very important for catching fish on many rivers. |
|
FISH EGGS
AS FISH
FOOD Eggs from spawning fish make up a substantial percentage of the seasonal biological drift in most streams. Eggs may be liberated into the natural flow of the stream either by errant currents during the spawning process or by catastrophes such as floods. In areas where fish are spawning, eggs are often more prevalent than aquatic insects in a foraging trout's diet. Deschutes Redsides dine all winter on white fish eggs. Alaskan rainbows get a seasonal boost from the roe of spawning salmon. Trout and steelhead often congregate down stream of the redds of spawners of their own race. All salmonids, especially Rainbows, Cutthroats, Dolly Varden and Rocky Mountain white fish are egg eaters. Fish eggs come in many sizes and colors. White fish eggs are 1/8" diameter and are transparent yellowish pink. Eggs from spawning resident rainbows are usually 3/16" in diameter and are translucent yellowish orange. Steelhead eggs are about 1/4" in diameter and exhibit the same coloration as their land locked cousins. Coho salmon eggs are nearly identical to steelhead eggs. Chinook salmon eggs are the same color but range to nearly 3/8" in diameter. Chum salmon eggs are slightly larger but lighter in color. |
![]() |
| All eggs change color as the embryo inside them develops. Trout and salmon eggs go through a similar metamorphosis. First the tiny eyes of the fish inside the egg forms a dark spot. Then the darker reddish-orange yoke sack starts to form. In later stages the silvery form of the fish is seen through the outer membrane of the egg. |
![]() |
|
If the egg is unfertilized it dies quickly and turns an opaque whitish-pink. Silt collected on the outer skin of the egg can give it a grayish cast. If the egg is allowed to drift long enough, it will be attacked by fungus and algae and become greenish. Trout and steelhead may become selective to these different egg nuances. Hot Glue Eggs are formed by applying colored hot glue to the hook shank and turning the hook to form a bead. A marabou tail is added to make the fly legal as a fly. The tail can be easily removed. |
|
"Glo Bugs" have been proven as the fly fishers premier egg imitations from California to Alaska. They are tied from a special high loft yarn. This yarn is placed on top of a short hook, parallel to the shank and secured with several wraps of strong thread. The yarn is compressed under the wraps of thread. The two ends are pulled up tight and clipped close to the hook. The resulting release of compression forms a spherical ball with all of the yarn fibers radiating from the hook. When soaked in water, many colors become translucent.
Veiled Eggs simulate slime fungus
covered dead eggs in the latter stages of decomposition. Some times
salmonids have dietary tastes in common with vultures, but they are
much prettier. |

Bead Head Egg, Gorman's This veiled egg pattern was created by Oregon fishing guide, Michael Gorman, who has used it effectively on the Siletz, Rogue and Santiam Rivers. Steelhead, Sea Run Cutthroats and resident trout have all fallen for this pattern. Flies such as this have been used for many years on the Sandy River as well. |

Bead Head Hot Egg,
Light Orange A slightly yellowish orange color, with a fairly small trout size egg. This fly is effective in many smaller rivers and creeks. Glo Bugs® Baby Pink Glo Bugs evolved on Northern California steelhead rivers. Anglers in Alaska quickly adopted them. They are made from a special high loft yarn that when tied to the hook with extreme pressure is trimmed to make a little ball. When wet the ball turns translucent and simulates an egg well enough to fool most egg eating fish. This color simulates a dead egg, and is |

| These are replacement tips for VersiTip, WindCutter, Skagit and PowerSpey changeable tip fly lines. You can mix and match these tips in many combinations to give your fly line arsenal extreme versatility. For instance a 550-grain Skagit Line is usually used with an eight-weight spey rod, but tips ranging from #8-#11 are used with these lines to customize both presentation and sink rate. Naturally smaller diameter diameter tips land on the water more softly than heavier ones, but will not turn over the largest flies and won't sink as deep as heavier ones. In our relentless pursuit of having everything for the Spey Fisher, our selection of tips is the most comprehensive to be found anywhere. Fact is that the tip is often the first part of the line to wear out, and being able to replace the tip might be more economically feasible during hard times. | |

Making Your Own Custom Sinking Tips and Shooting Heads To take the best advantage of many freshwater and saltwater fisheries you often need to get your fly deep. This requires a fly line that sinks quickly. Rio makes extremely high density sinking fly lines that comes in a roll, which can be cut to any length that suits your purpose. These lines come in five different weights: T-8 that weighs 8-grains per foot, T-11 that weighs 11-grains per foot, T-14 that weighs 14-grains per foot, T-17 that weighs 17-grains per foot, and T-20 that weighs 20-grains per foot. Rio T-lines are supple, easy to work with, and do not kink while fishing. Sink rates were revised for 2012. T-20 sinks more than 10-inches per second, T-17 sinks about 9-10 inches per second. T-14 sinks about 8-9 inches per second. T-11 sinks about 7-8 inches per second. T-8 sinks about 6-7 inches per second. M.O.W. Tips and factory made 10' and 15' density compensated Replacement sinking tips and sinking shooting heads can be purchased in many useable weights and densities as well. The advantage you have using the Rio T-lines are that they cost about half as much and can be cut to any length to be customized for many presentation where the highest density sink rates are needed. T-8 is designed for single-hand rods 6 through 8 weight and lighter #4-#7 two-hand rods. T-11 is ideal for single handed rods between #7 and #9 and two-hand rods of #7 to #9. T-14 is best for single-hand rods from 10 through 12 weight, and double-hand rod with Spey lines #8 and heavier. T-14 works especially well with the Skagit Spey lines 475-grains and heavier. T-17 is ideal for single handed rods between #11 and #13 and two handed rods of #8 to #10. T-17 works especially well with the Skagit Spey lines 575-grains and heavier. T-20 is ideal for single handed rods between #12 and #16 and two handed rods of #9 to #11. T-20 works especially well with the Skagit Spey lines 650-grains and heavier. Heavier lines not only sink faster, but also retain the energy to turn over larger flies. The Chart Below offers insights into lengths and weights of T-lines: |

| Building Loops In Rio T-Line Tips | ||||
![]() |
||||
|
Starting in the mid- 1960's, tournament casters in the Pacific
Northwest revolutionized fly fishing by introducing the double-haul
cast and shooting head fly lines attached to monofilament shooting
lines. Suddenly anglers could cast nearly twice as far by building
much higher line speeds and by reducing line-friction in the rod
guides. Anglers also found that they could change from floating
heads to sinking heads quickly by attaching their shooting heads and
lines together with loop to loop connections. During the late 1980's
American anglers also found that they could change the configuration
of their Spey lines by loop to looping various lengths of floating
and sinking lines together.
Slip-over loops made from braided monofilament
became the most popular items for these connections. Where large
diameter floating line connections are involved, these braided loops
remain the most popular tools to get the job done smoothly. A popular way to form loops in Rio T-line is to simply fold the end of the line over and nail knot monofilament over it several times. I like 12-pound Maxima for all sizes of T-line loops. Three nail knots add a measure of reliability. Coat the knots with Zap-A-Gap for extra insurance. |

Rio Skagit Tips Many Skagit Lines don't come with tips, so we decided to make up our own kits in the most popular sizes. Rio makes the most popular sinking tips. These tip sets will fit heads from 350-grains to 750-grains. Each kit contains (four tips), an intermediate, type-3, type-6 and type-8 tip. Each tip is 15' long. These tips can be used with all Skagit lines made by Rio, Airflo and Scientific Anglers. These sets offer a substantial saving over the cost of the pieces purchased separately ($109.75). |
