A 500-grain head it loads this rod perfectly and makes tight narrow loops using the "under hand" cast. Our tests in the field:
Session One, 10/20, mid-day: "Strung the rod up with a 460-grain AFS head, and fished it through 250-yards of demanding water. Fished casts to about 100-feet, then reeled in to fish the water at hand, which required about 65-feet of line beyond the rod tip. Then realized that the rod was marked to take 500-grains. Changed to a 520-grain AFS. Fished the same piece of water again with the same leader and fly. I found better harmony with the lighter head. The rod seemed to be more predictable and easier to time with the lighter head.
Session Two, 10/20, Evening: tried the next session with a 500-grain Skagit Flight, looped to 12.5-feet of T-11. This combination was difficult to cast for a period of time. Then found the groov, and eventually I was able to fish deep at ranges of 80+ feet.
Session Three, 10/21, Morning: Only one steelhead of about 6 pounds was landed, no test at all for this rod. This fish came to the fly and pulled on the fly very daintily two different casts before it was finally hooked on another fly on the third presentation.
Session Four, 10/21, Evening: Fished the 500-grain Skagit Flight/12.5-feet of T-11 combo again probing the deep water. Two fish pulled gently on the fly, no hook-ups. Water still 2-3 foot visibility. Skagit outfit is becoming more comfortable on NRX. The rod is very fast action and has the ability to store tremendous energy in the tip section. The dense cork handle does transmit more feel to your hand. The handle shape and diameter facilitates finger-tip control.
Session Five, 10/22, Morning: Fished 250-yards of a deep tailout wading on my tip-toes to keep water from coming over the top of my waders. Used a very a very large fly. This piece of water demands very long casts. Was able to accomplish the task, and caught a wild buck steelhead of about nine-pounds. This fish went into the backing about fifty yards and jumped at least ten times. The NRX did a great job.

Session Six, 10/21/10, Morning:

As two-hand rods get longer, casting distance increases, that's a given. The beauty of this 14-footer is the NRX dynamics... it's insanely light, has extraordinary power and handles like a rod much shorter. It's totally capable of handling heavier heads and is sneaky quick... a bonus when you want to turn over big, weighted flies. Big winter steelhead won't go far to chase down a fly so you have to put it right in their face making accuracy and line control is everything. Anglers swinging big tube flies on swift Nordic rivers will appreciate the power of this rod. This rod is dual-rated in grams for Europe and grains for the North American market. Under the G. Loomis the standard rating-system this would be a 9/10. This is a great all-around two-hand rod!

The Carron-65 is a long distance fishing line you will appreciate on big rivers. Egg Flies

Hot Glue Egg, Natural Salmon
These eggs are very natural in the water and have accounted for many trout and steelhead. The whippy marabou tail adds movement and might simulate an egg that is coming apart or has membrane attached to it. This color simulates a dead egg that has been rolling down the river for awhile.

When fishing behind spawning salmon, a single egg that sinks quickly is often an advantage. Trout can become very selective when egg-drift is dense. Alaska guides found that a transparent plastic bead would often out fish any Glo Bug. However, in order to get the bead down to the fish, weight often had to be added to the leader. This weight some times spooked finicky fish. This transparent egg has a brass bead in side it for weight and will sink rapidly.
