If you are going to fish the
Deschutes or Crooked River, Hwy 26 is the most direct
route from Portland to Central Oregon. Here is a good
way to check out the road conditions through the Cascade Mountain
Passes: Government
Camp Road Camera. Stop and see us. |
|
Hatches: Water levels are on the rise with recent heavy rains in the Cascades. The water color is turning to mud. In spite of this off-color, rising water Baetis Mayflies will hatch mid-day and trout will rise. The Baetis hatch usually starts around 11:00am and can last most of the afternoon. Also rising water causes "catastrophic drift", which means that many aquatic insects will be dislodged from the bottom and be available to feeding trout. Fish often move very close to the bank when feeding. Nymphing with mayfly nymphs, midge pupa, caddis pupa, caddis larva or stone fly nymph patterns can be very productive for trout and whitefish. The above situations are best covered with a floating fly line and all patterns are fished drag free. Some Chinooks are still spawning in the lower river. Egg drift is an attraction for trout and steelhead. Even when the water color was good, steelhead fishing has been spotty in the lower Deschutes below White River. Steelhead fishing from White River to Warm Springs has also been off and on, but more consistent than the lower river. We recently heard of some good action from Trout Creek to Harpum Flat. A higher population of steelhead and slightly warmer water are suspected causes. Be advised that the recent rains may add colored run-off from both Trout Creek and the Warm Springs River. |

14-Day Forecast: Water flows in the Deschutes will be stable. Water temperatures will warm. Hatches remain prolific. Steelhead run will gradually build. Predictions are favorable. |
|
Other Information: The Deschutes is one of the great rivers in the Pacific Northwest. Much of it is open to angling year round. Few rivers in the world can boast as good endemic resident trout populations as the Deschutes. Add in big runs of summer and fall steelhead and you have one of the finest fisheries in the world. |

| Fish Runs: It has stopped raining and the river is dropping and clearing. It should be fishable today. Expect a few new, bright winter steelhead. Predictions have been that a change of hatchery brood stock will result in fewer early hatchery steelhead. Most fish will be wild. Expect some of these first winter fish to be larger than average. There are few old summer steelhead, and Fall Chinook left around. These fish are colored. The Sandy River is at medium winter season water levels. |

14-Day Forecast: Expect the Sandy River to be fishable most of the winter. The river is usually dropping if the freezing level is below 4000 feet. The river is usually rising if the freezing level is above 5000 feet. Warm weather will bring snow melt and glacial run off. Steelhead will be available through the winter. |
|
Other Information: The Sandy is possibly the best urban river in the west for anadromous fish. From Marmot Dam to the mouth it remains open for fishing all year. |
