Tip Dyed Rabbit Strips
Incredibly huge
selection of rabbit strips
for tying
flies. These strips are dyed a darker color at the tips of the hair. The first five colors with FS prefix are designed for, but not limited to, the construction of flesh flies for use in areas such as Alaska where trout eat copious amounts of decaying salmon flesh. The colors with a prefix of TT were designed for use as Zonker strips for tying imitations of bait that have a definite darker dorsal strip, or darker dorsal area. The strips can also be wound on a hook to create some unusual bunny buggers. The standard strips are 1/8" wide and include 4 strips per package, approximately four feet total. The Rabbit Matuka Steelhead Fly is a proven pattern type that is further improved when tied with Tip Dyed Rabbit Strips. When wet, this material moves with the currents and mimics the actions of swimming baitfish, shrimp and squid. |

The Matuka style of fly seems to have originated in New Zealand. It was unique because a long feather-wing was lashed to the body with a spiral wrap of oval tinsel. This strategy prevents the wing from fouling and has a unique action in the water. Rabbit strips can be used in this manner even more effectively than feathers. A common manner evolved lashing a thin strip of rabbit hide to the top of the body with oval tinsel. However, since rabbit hide is very strong, even when wet, it only needs to be attached to the hook at each end of the body, thus simplifying fly construction. A rather long dense collar of hackle blends with the wing and further enhances the streamlined shape of the fly when it is wet. Rabbit Matukas can be used to simulate several prime game fish foods such as Sculpins, Leeches, juvenile Lampreys and a host of marine organisms such as shrimp, baitfish and squid. In the Pacific Northwest Matuka style flies have caught Black Bass, Resident Trout, Sea Runs, Steelhead and Chinooks.

Pattern: Rabbit Strip Matuka |
The Rabbit Strip Matuka is a type of fly that can assume many different color combinations. The combinations available are only limited by your imagination. |
Place the hook in the vice and secure your tying thread in the normal manner. Stop the thread at a point that lines up half way between the point and the barb. Give the wraps a coat of tying cement. |
Wet and part the fur on the rabbit strip so that about 1/2-inch of hide will extend behind where you attach it to the hook. If this proves to be too long and the rear of the fly annoys you by becoming wrapped around the hook while you are fishing, you can always trim the leather with your leader clipper. We are using FS280 Peach Orange. |
Secure the strip to the hook with about ten wraps of thread over the leather strip and then a couple of wraps in front of the leather strip. |
Dub on a substantial body of Ice Dub. In this case we are using ICE271 Orange. Ice Dub is made from very fine strands of Mylar. It is easy to dub on a single thread or in a loop. |
The dubbed body should taper at each end. Be sure to leave plenty of room to tie the rest of the fly. |
We like to disrupt and train the dubbing fibers so that the body of the fly is surrounded by a glistening halo of fibers. The Ultimate Dubbing Brush is a great tool for this job. |
Train the hair on the rabbit strip so that the gap where the rear of the strip was attached to the fly disappears. Pull the strip forward and hold it under tension and tie it to the hook in front of the body. This task is much easier if the hair is moistened and parted where the thread wraps are supposed to go. |
Trim and discard the tag end of the rabbit strip. Comb and train the hairs on the rabbit strip until they suit you. The large end of The Ultimate Dubbing Brush is perfect for this job. |
Wind on a pink and an orange (or any color) schlappen for
the collar hackle. |

Prospects for the Sandy
River![]() |
| The place was deserted. The river was low and carried the color of glacial silt. I stared off the bridge, my elbows resting on the handrail. Forty years had passed since the first time I had been to this part of the Sandy River Canyon. Then there was a wooden dam, but no bridge. Since then the wooden dam was replaced by one made from concrete and then it was removed. Now, except for a concrete sill high on the river bank and the beautiful foot bridge where I stood, all evidence of human activity had dissolved into the past. Where the dam had stood there was a beautiful pool where the river collided with bedrock. The broad shallow exit of the pool appeared to beckon for the tails of spawning fish. Even as familiar with the place as I had become, it was hard to envision that the site had ever looked different than today. The dam was gone and so too was its memory. PGE had done a great job in restoring the site back to nature. Even the giant concrete lined canals that had carried the diverted water to the generators had been filled with earth and landscaped so that in a few years when the natural vegetation took over, even the landscaping would be hard to find. Several land owners along the upper Sandy River tributaries told me that this fall there were many more spawning Chinooks than anyone could remember in recent years. |

One of the biggest worries was that the large amounts of sediments stacked up behind Marmot Dam would be released down the river and have detrimental effects on fish habitat. ODFW even captured a significant number of wild Sandy River Fall Chinooks and spawned them artificially as a hedge against a disaster form sedimentation released by the dam removal. This is the first hatchery rearing of Sandy River Fall Chinooks since 1977. This may have been a prudent move against extinction, but completely unnecessary as most of the gravel and sand that was trapped behind the dam has only moved about a mile and a half since the dam was taken down. So far all of the effects from removing the dam look positive. PGE has documented every step of the dam removal process. This should take a lot of the guess work out of taking down similar dams in the future. You can find many interesting facts at marmotdam.com. |

RIO Products
introduces a stunning new Bonefish Line |
| After two years of testing cores, coatings, tapers and color combinations RIO is proud to announce the launch of the very latest in bonefish fly lines. RIO’s new bonefish fly line features a unique taper design that allows a rod to load at close range. The designed medium-length front taper promotes great turnover, and a long back taper smooths out the casting loop to keep the line stable on long shots. A hard, saltwater coating over a medium stiff core results in a fly line that will not wilt in most tropical conditions, while RIO's dirt-repelling XS Technology keeps the line ultra slick for fast, long casts. The line is also manufactured with RIO’s AgentX undercoat that produces a high |

floating line that is easy and quiet to
pick up off the water, and unlike standard saltwater lines, ensures the
running line will not sink and tangle while wading. The line’s taper and
final design is a direct result of RIO’s commitment to the most involved
and dedicated product testing. All possible core permutations were
meticulously tested; each taper tweaked and perfected; every color
viewed in a multitude of locations and light conditions: The end result
is the finest bonefish fly line on the market. The head of the line is a
light sand color that is incredibly easy to see in all light conditions,
while the contrasting dusty blue running line makes it easy to find the
line's perfect loading point. A welded loop at both ends is included for
easy rigging. |
