Steak
& Eggs
and Baetis for Desert by J. Morgan Jones There is nothing better than steak and eggs on the Deschutes River during the October to January season for many trout fishers. I do not mean breakfast at the Rainbow Tavern in Maupin, but rather, the aptly named fly combination of a black stonefly and a Glo Bug (egg pattern) dropper. The black stonefly nymphs are present in the Deschutes year around, and as such, makes an excellent weight to get a Glo Bug down in the water column. I have been using a Peacock Crawler (stonefly tied with peacock herl) instead of the traditional style stonefly with good results. |

Although there are some
purist fly anglers who disdain the use of egg patterns,
one should keep in mind that on the most Oregon rivers, eggs are a
naturally occurring food source nearly year round. Salmon, steelhead,
trout and whitefish spawn fuels a huge percentage of the food chain
and are consumed regularly by all of these same species of game
fish. In addition to that, the traditional Glo Bug pattern meets the legal (state of Oregon) test for an
artificial fly. Fish Hard- Die Old |

Kid's
stuff. Little kids enjoy catching big fish, too! So you think that landing big fish with a fly rod is difficult. Maybe it's a matter of having the right gear & instruction. The intrepid duo at left are Trent and Tyson. One day last fall on Eagle Creek, the two of them they put nine Coho on the beach under the supervision of Jason Hambly. Tyson is 5 and Trent is 3. |
