There is little doubt that salmon and steelhead live perilous lives. They exist in a world where predation and catastrophes are commonplace. In October, 1997 a seismic shock created a huge slide on Mt. Adams that dammed a glacial tributary of the Klickitat River called Big Muddy Creek. Since then the lake that formed behind this dam served as a settling-pond for the glacial silt that was carried by this creek. As a result the Klickitat River has been running somewhat clearer than normal. Over the years the lake behind |
|
dam has been filling with mud. On October 20 this year, Northern Washington experienced abnormally warm weather which increased glacial melt-water. The resulting run-off caved away over 100' of the dam and dumped all the accumulated silt into the Klickitat River. This slurry, which covered much of the river bed in places to a depth of 4', effectively smothered and killed |

many the fish down stream. Estimates of the kill ranges from 10% to nearly 100%. According to our conversations with four Yakima Indian biologist that we met on the river, most of these fish were hatchery bread Chinooks and steelhead. Some had been buried nearly four foot deep. Most had died before spawning. Amazingly, the wild run of Chinooks which return to the river slightly later run than the hatchery stock arrived |

about three weeks later than normal and seemed largely unaffected by the slide. We observed hundreds of pairs that were spawning as if nothing was out of the ordinary. One has to wonder the late arrival was circumstantial or if similar events in the past had selected the later |

returning fish and made the difference in run timing. |

| Ultimate
Fly Tiers Station by Oasis-Giraffe-Dyna-King What if you had the power to design the ultimate portable fly tying station? What would it look like? We started with a Solid Oak Fly Tying Bench by Oasis. It measures 17" x 20", a size that is easy to carry, yet will hold all of your tools and much of the materials you might want to travel with. For lighting and magnification we chose the Giraffe ISO96 System with 30" bendable arms. The metal deck of this unit fits snuggly into the Oasis bench. As the focal point we chose the new Dyna-King Barracuda Indexer Vise with a "C" Clamp and extension. This places the vise head nearly in the center of the bench Where it is most convenient and accessible to the light and magnifying glass. A Dyna-King Trim Bag will help keep the fly tying mess to a minimum. |
