Olive Orange Advanced Flight Spey Shooting heads have a very unique taper design that easily loads up a spey rod either for overhead casting, or for spey, or the underhand casting style. I was able to spend a lot of time on the Deschutes River fishing the Rio AFS Shooting head system during August, September and October, the past three seasons. My clients and I found the AFS Line to be ideal for most of the steelhead fishing we did there. It works in both calm and windy
conditions. Because the Deschutes is a river where the riparian zone is allowed to flourish naturally, back-cast room is always a problem. The short-head configuration of the AFS allows an angler to form very shallow D-loops and still cast remarkable distances. By and large all the water that needs to be covered, can be covered easily with the AFS. The short body section and long, fine front taper efficiently transfers energy down the length of the head and results in great turnover and a precise presentation of the fly. Incredibly tight loops and effortless casts of easy distance are a result of this unique taper design. Each AFS floating shooting heads come in two colors: two-tone olive/yellow and bright orange. Both ends of the AFS head feature a small, neat welded loop. Attach a suitable shooting line to the rear loop – either SlickShooter or one of RIO’s Powerflex core shooting lines for the best in performance. AFS heads work equally wel with standard knotless tapered nylon leaders or Rio VersiLeaders. For rods 13' and shorter in length use AFS with a standard tapered leader or with a PolyLeader 10' or shorter. For rods longer than 13' a PolyLeader of 10'-15' might be desirable. AFS Heads work well with nylon leaders of 12' and 15' lengths where back cast room is available. They are also excellent with 10', 9, and even 6' nylon leaders where back cast space is restricted. a shorter leader is a good cure for the dreaded "Bloody-ell". AFS Sage Rod Compatibility Chart.

Rio Steelhead Scandi Line NEW for 2011 Rio's latest Scandinavian style shooting head is designed for the two-hand and switch rod steelhead fly fishers. With shorter head lengths and shorter front tapers than previous Rio Scandi designs, they are ideal for casting larger steelhead flies and sinking VersiLeaders. The head size options have been carefully selected, and tuned for the most common rods used by modern steelhead fly fishers, and feature Rio's newest skinny welded loops on each end for easy rigging. In 31' lengths they are meant for very short spey rods and switch rods of 12' or less in lengths. In lengths of 32' to 34' they are meant for rods of 12' and longer.

Rio enlisted some of the most experienced salmon/steelhead fishers in the country to help design and prove their new Skagit Flight Shooting Head system. Guides such as: Mark Bachmann, Josh Linn, Brian Silvey, & Hawkeye Hawkins were included in the field testing crew. They worked directly with Simon Gawesworth to design the most modern Spey Line system to fit the latest rods and casting techniques. Final design testing was done at our very own Summer Steelhead PhD School on the Deschutes River. What has been produced here is the ultimate tool for fishing large flies on sinking tip lines, plus an extraordinary line for fishing in the wind. The new Skagit Flight Shooting Head may be the ultimate design in Skagit lines for maximum flight time, effortless casting strokes and the tightest and sweetest of loops. Based on the extraordinarily successful AFS head, the line features a back end that loads rods deeply and easily and a long, subtle front taper that ensures the energy flows smoothly to the tip, generating gorgeous loops and long, long flight times and distance. The front end has a thick tip that packs a big punch and easily lifts out heavy tips and large flies with supreme ease. The heads vary in length between 24 ft and 31 ft, depending on the size, and the range of weights ensures that even the most fastidious of casters will be able to tune their rod to perfection. Attach a shooting line to the ultra strong welded loop at the back end and one of RIO’s 15 ft tips or a piece of T-11, T-14 or T-17 (sold separately) to the exceptionally neat, bullet proof front loop. Rio Skagit Short Shooting Head These lines are interchangeable with other heads within your shooting head system (such as Rio AFS). Skagit Shorts are Skagit lines designed for shorter rods, both single-hand and switch rods. The heads on these lines are 20' (6,2m) long (the perfect ratio for rods between 9' and 11') while head weights are light enough for rods down to 5-weight. The line is bright green with a black loading point for easy casting control. As with all other shooting heads, a shooting line needs to be added, and as with all other Skagit lines, a front tip needs to be added to complete the set up.

For Your Contemplation

A copy of this old photograph arrived on my desk from an unknown source. The caption read: "This picture was taken at the Union Fisherman's Dock in Astoria, Oregon in about 1910. Left to right - Salmon weighs 116 pounds and 121 pounds." At first I thought they were halibut. Then I realized they were Chinooks. Wouldn't it change the looks of your fly tackle if these fish still roamed our rivers. What kind of Spey rod would you use to land these fish? An interesting thought. Anybody got a time machine?
