TCR Spey Rods |
|
Wimps need not apply. These
specialty rods are designed for serious two-hand rod fishers who are
looking for two things: fly line speed and distance casting
accuracy. The average caster will find these rods overwhelming and
fatiguing. However, the top 10% will find plenty of reasons to own
one or several of these incredibly powerful rods. The TCR Series
lends itself to throwing sinking tip lines and shooting heads very long
distances. The 10150-4 TCR will become the most popular Alaskan
Chinook rod. It may also become the most popular big salmon rod
for use in northern Europe. It has the butt strength to put the
maximum pull on #20 Maxima. The 9140-4 TCR that we used at the
2004 Sandy River Spey Clave was very fast. I worked the Clave pool
with it one evening. The limits to distance with a 9/10/11
WindCutter was how well the running line was kept from balling up.
Throwing 400 grain sinking heads with this rod is a breeze. We
haven't had a chance to try the two smaller models. There is the
probability that they will find favor with anglers who use Scandinavian
Shooting Heads. This is Sage's flag ship series and the finish and
craftsmanship is impeccable. The chili pepper color is very
pleasing. |

Report on the PHD
Classes |
| Fly fishing for steelhead is not a casual sport any time of year, even when runs are at peak. The Deschutes may be the easiest of all rivers to catch steelhead from, but as we found, this year's run is late. The class from September 1-4 put up with run-off from White River. There weren't many fish and the ones that were around, weren't very active. However on 09/03/04, Bill Keifel brought 8 steelhead to the fly and landed 4. The largest was about 12-pounds. During our second class, September 7-10 the river cleared but the fish moved slowly the first two days. The last two days half the students had multiple hook-ups. Both Simon Gawesworth and Andy Murray had multiple hook-ups each day of their classes. Thanks to all who attended. |

Great
sport-fish will make you earn them. But, that just makes them more precious when you connect. Steelhead are more precious than diamonds. And so are good fishing partners. Thanks, MB |
