Adrian Dufflocq has often been referred to as the "Lee Wulff of South America". He will come to Oregon, in October. October 12, he will be at The Fly Fishing Shop for a presentation of fly fishing in Chile. October 14th he will make a presentation to the Fly Fishers of Oregon Club's annual Ladies Night (members only). Adrian Dufflocq is the grandson of a Frenchman who brought Cabernet grape vines to Chile in the late 1800's. In the early 1960's, while fishing and exploring Chile and Argentina´s trout rivers, coincidentally so well described by Roderick Haig-Brown in his famous book |
|
"Fisherman's Winter", the search for a good life brought Adrian Dufflocq and his young wife Patricia, to a superb place on the Cumilahue river. Subsequently, in 1963, they built and started the first fly fishing lodge in Chile. For decades, stories of the Cumilahue Lodge, describing the pleasant, traditional ambience of a world class fly fishing lodge, have been written by famous anglers in many books and magazines. It is located in a remote valley of the Andes, where time stopped, and is described in National Geographic's book "Excursion to Enchantment.…. A Journey to the World's Most Beautiful Places' (1988). |

The lodge is located in one of the most spectacular rivers and lakes system in the country: the Lake Ranco drainage which has unique conditions for outdoor recreation, without parallel in the country. A variety of outstanding natural resources: lakes, islands, rivers, streams and springs, some of them with hot water, two volcanoes, and pastoral valleys crossed by pristine rivers which provide excellent trout fishing, are all surrounded by snow caped mountains and virgin woods. The lake Ranco drainage, is a complex water system with more than two hundred |
|
important streams, 16
rivers, 23 lagoons and four large lakes. The snow of the Andes mountains
melt through creeks, to feed a chain of lakes that empty into each other
through several rivers. The Lake Ranco, the second largest lake in
Chile, gathers all of these waters; it's outlet, the "Río Bueno"
flows free for over 120 miles to finally reach the Pacific Ocean. |

| There
will be some very significant new
fly rods in 2004. Winston, Sage and St. Croix have a number of meaningful fly rod improvements on the horizon. We might have already told you about the Winston proto type 12-weight that was used to spank Dorado and Striped Marlin at Loreto, Mexico last July. This 12-weight is as light as most 7-weights. There will be a whole new very diverse series of rods with this technology in 2004. Also St. Croix is changing models in their very successful Legend Ultra Series. All of the 2004 Legend Ultras are either four or five pieces for travel and are build with St.Croix's proprietary IPC (Integrated Poly Curve Technology) which has been well proven in the more expensive Legend Elite Series. Legend Ultra Rods may already be some of the greatest bargains available. They offer very light swing weight and very crisp actions which produce commanding line speed. Good craftsmanship and common sense cosmetics add to the value. Prices are not raising in 2004. The IPC technology will make them an even greater value. We are closing out the 2003 Legend Ultras Rods at 30% OFF to make room for the new ones. So far Sage has been very hush, hush about their new saltwater series that is going to replace the RPLXi Series. We know that it will cause a commotion as the newest Sage rod models always do. We're closing out the RPLXi Rods at 30% OFF now. They are available in very limited numbers. This is a time of year when you can get some really good deals on fly rods if you can act quickly. |

test report: Sage 5120-4 Spey Rod If you are a light tackle fan, you will love the 12' #5 spey rod from Sage. this rod is lightweight enough for trout (it may be the ultimate big water nymph rod) and it has plenty of punch for casting average size steelhead flies and medium size wooly buggers to 90'. We played with this rod a lot during the recent Steelhead PhD School. There were some real surprises. This is a much more authoritative rod in the wind than you would expect and it has the power rocket sinking tips. What really makes this rod rock n' roll is the new Rio WinCutter with tips fly line. Yes, I said, "WindCutter with tips". This brand new edition to the famous WindCutter series of spey lines comes with an intermediate, type 3 sinking tip, type 6 sinking tip and floating tip. There is only one loop to loop connection. It does not have a removable mid-section like the larger spey lines. Now you can fish for trout and steelhead with wooly buggers and a five weight spey rod. Think that doesn't open up some possibilities? I didn't take much time with the new "tips" line. Instead I watched Brian Silvey hammer out repeated 90' bullets into a howling gale. I was happy to work on a new "V" Double Spey that Simon Gawsworth showed me. This was done with the 5120-4 and the full floating 5/6 WindCutter. With or without the new cast, this rod delivers amazing line speed for its size. |
