Wading Jackets
If you're dry you're probably warm. If you're wet, you're probably not...
August is usually the driest month in the northern hemisphere and it might seem like a strange time to feature rain jackets. Water-proof wading jackets made from breathable materials, such as Gore-Tex are very comfortable. In Oregon, (even in the desert) it can rain any time and many anglers are going to Alaska and British Columbia where it is much cooler. A hood that covers your head has proven to be a popular addition to nearly every wading jacket design. The hood not only covers your head, but also keeps water from running down your neck and getting your interior clothing wet. Besides keeping you dry, a good wading jacket keeps the wind from penetrating your under garments. Besides making you weather-proof, a wading jacket should have an array of convenient pockets. For steelhead/salmon anglers, a wading jacket often takes the place of a fishing vest, and helps organize and store fly boxes and other essential gear. All of the jackets below are water proof and have the essential pockets for warming hands and carrying gear, except for the In-Vest Jacket. The In-Vest Jacket is water-proof and very lightweight. It lacks most gear storage pockets in order to to stay non-bulky so that it can be carried in the back pocket of a fishing vest. This also makes it the perfect rain jacket for traveling to warm water destinations.

North Umpqua DAN CALLAGHAN'S NORTH UMPQUA
Dan Callaghan
Steamboat Inn, Jul 2008
Subject Category: Fly Fishing
Format:  Hardcover
Pages:  180 pages
Trim Size:  12" x 12"
ISBN:  0-9817250-0-7

This is a picture book of one man's love of a river. No portrayal on the internet can do it justice.
We love Dan Callaghan for many things: his excellence & passion as a fly-fisherman, his life-long devotion & hard work for the fish & fisheries he loved, his eye as a photographer, his warmth & kindness, his delight in river otters, dippers, spring flowers, autumn leaves, & rivers.
Dan Callaghan, Oregon’s consummate natural photographer, is immortalized in this book on his river home, the North Umpqua. Dan had an inquisitive mind, a sharp artist’s eye, a touch of whimsy, & a tenacity for perfection. He captured the essences of the Umpqua River in all her glory during the best & worst of conditions. His art displays the splendor of the seasons; the bleak & startling beauty of winter, the rejuvenation of spring, the lushness of summer, & the unsurpassed brilliance of fall. Anglers at the height of their rhythm, intensity, & joy were preserved by his shutter. This spectacular photographic journey will bring you closer to the North Umpqua, closer to nature, perhaps closer to yourself.
This book deserves a place on any table where anglers who really love rivers come to gather.

Rio AFS (Advanced Flight Spey) Line
It has been about a year since Rio introduced the Advanced Flight Spey Line and in those twelve month it has become the most popular "Scandinavian Shooting Head" type spey line sold in the Pacific Nortwest.

AFS Shooting Head  Buy Now!
Advanced Flight Spey Shooting heads have a very unique taper design that easily loads up a spey rod either for overhead casting, or for spey, or the underhand casting style. I was able to spend a lot of time on the Deschutes River fishing the Rio AFS Shooting head system during August, September and October, 2007 and again in July 2008.  My clients and I found the AFS Line to be ideal for most of the steelhead fishing we did there.  It works in both calm and windy conditions.  Because the Deschutes is a

river where the riparian zone is allowed to flourish naturally, back-cast room is always a problem.  The short-head configuration of the AFS allows an angler to form very shallow D-loops and still cast remarkable distances.  By and large all the water that needs to be covered, can be covered easily with the AFS. The short body section and long, fine front taper efficiently transfers energy down the length of the head and results in great turnover and a precise presentation of the fly. Incredibly tight loops and effortless casts of easy distance are a result of this unique taper design.
The original AFS floating shooting head is two-colored with the majority of the line being a subtle green color to avoid spooking fish in low and clear water. The rear 15 ft is a visible yellow, allowing the angler to track the line and control how it fishes as it swings through the current. There is also a Hi-Vis bright orange version. Both ends of the AFS head feature a small, neat welded loop. Attach a suitable shooting line to the rear loop – and either as standard monofilament leader or one of RIO’s VersiLeaders to the front end for complete casting control. The rear loop of the AFS is bar-coded for easy recognition.
AFS lines work best with rods that are 13 1/2' or shorter.

AFS OutBound Spey Line   Buy Now!
The AFS OutBound has a similar taper design to the AFS shooting head but the body continues seamlessly into a thin, floating shooting line of 0.030" diameter. It is ideal for those that don’t want a connection between the head and the shooting line.
Length: 120 ft
Color: Green/Yellow shooting line with black loading point.

Both ends of the AFS head feature a small, neat welded loop. Attach a suitable shooting line to the rear loop – either SlickShooter or one of RIO’s Powerflex core shooting lines for the best in performance – and one of RIO’s Powerflex core leaders to the front end for complete depth control. The rear loop is bar-coded for easy recognition.
Essentially this is Rio's version of the popular Vision Ace line.
For rods 13' and shorter in length use AFS with a standard tapered leader or with a PolyLeader 10' or shorter.  For rods longer than 13' a PolyLeader of 10'-15' might be desirable.
