Winston Two-Handed Rods With a factory located in the center of the Montana trout country, some anglers might find it surprising that the R.L. Winston company produces some of the best two-hand rods available for anadromous fish such as salmon and steelhead. But, that is exactly how it works. Winston's head rod designer Sam Drukman, with the help of German Spey Casting Wizard, Andre Scholz have designed rods that are incredibly lightweight, accurate, durable and comfortable to fish with.

New for 2009! Possibly the ultimate light line steelhead rod for the Deschutes, Grand Ronde, North Umpqua, Klickitat, etc. We have already caught a bunch of Deschutes steelhead with this rod. These fish have ranged from 4-11 pounds. We have used both the Airflo Scandi Compact and Rio AFS lines to fish size 4-6 traditional wet and waking flies. There is little discernible difference between the performance of these two lines on this rod. We fished this Winston in some howling winds, which it handled as well as any small rod we have used. It was rigged with a Waterworks/Lamson ULA Force 3.4 reel for perfect balance. The Winston BIIX 12' 6" 6/7 is destined to be one of the most popular two-hand rods ever made. RIOMax Plus

New for 2009! We began testing RioMax Plus in October 2008 on the Deschutes. We've had no failures. RioMax Plus is designed to compete in the salmon/steelhead arena where Maxima has reigned supreme for 30-yars. We found that RioMax Plus is as supple as Maxima Green, but much tougher. It is even more abrasion resistant than Maxima Clear, but slightly smaller in diameter for equal breaking strength. RioMax Plus is an incredibly tough, medium stiff tippet material, designed to be the most abrasion resistant nylon leader material available. It is perfect for fishing streamers for trout, and for salmon, steelhead, bass and for saltwater species such as bonefish and striped bass. A slick coating makes it very easy to tie knots.
Straightens easily. If you signed up for the Summer Steelhead PhD School with Simon Gawesworth, a full set of RIOMax Tippet material will be supplied to fit the Leader Formulas below. An extensive class on leader design and construction will be taught in camp. You will build a few of your own.

Books By: Oregon's Al Buhr

Al Buhr has been an avid steelhead fisherman since his youth and was introduced to Spey casting by the late Jim Green in 1982. Al has since been on the leading edge of rod and line development for many years with Sage in developing two-handed rods and with Scientific Angler in designing several Spey fly lines. In 2004, Al chaired a committee of line and rod manufacturers that established a manufacturing line-weight designation standard ratified by the Association of Fishing Tackle Manufacturers of America.

Al is also a member of the Federation of Fly Fishers' Casting Board of Governors' and is chairman of the Two-Handed Casting Instructor program. He is a FFF-certified Master Casting Instructor and Two-Handed Casting Instructor. Al has given workshops on fly casting and steelhead fly fishing throughout the United States and at many Federation of Fly Fishers' Conclaves.

	HOW TO DESIGN FLY LINES Al Buhr PUBLISHED BY AL BUHR Softcover : $19.95 All Buhr began building fly lines in the late 1970's as a way to improve his steelhead fishing. In 1980, he met Jim Green and joined the Fenwick team. Al mentored under Jim Green in both rod and line design. In 1989, Al joined Sage rods and shortly after, teamed up with Scientific Anglers.
In 1994, with Bruce Richards of Scientific Anglers, Al designed the Mastery Spey/Salmon Taper and later the Short Head and Mid Head spey lines.
