7-Weight Spey Rods In the lower-48, seven-weight two-hand rods are very popular for summer steelhead and smaller salmon. The list below includes a broad spectrum of actions and prices. Rods vary from 6/7 to7/8 power rating, but could all can be classified as seven weights and all are appropriate for summer steelhead rods for use throughout the Columbia River Basin. All have been tested by our staff. |

In the last month, over 135,000 steelhead have been counted at Bonneville Dam. This has meant good fishing in the Columbia and Deschutes rivers. Managers are projecting that more than 300,000 steelhead will enter the Columbia during the summer steelhead season. It might be time to consider a new seven-weight spey rod. |

| This is a dry fly long liner delight. It has great feel as it loads to for the D loop, with just enough butt stiffness to propel your offering 90 feet plus. At the light end of Greased Line style, this GLX rod is wonderful for smaller fish with enough power to handle a big one should it find your fly. For casters without lots of hand strength, looking for a longer rod to help get extra distance, this rod is the lightest weight 15 foot rod available. Experts may be surprised how well a #7/8 long belly line turns over and stretches for distance, even into light wind. Tremendous control of the drift is had with its 15 foot length. If you're seeking a "Far and Fine" Greased Line rod, look no further. Is designed to cast best with WindCutter 7/8/9, PowerSpey 7/8, Skagit 500, AFS 460 or Airflo Skagit Compact 480 or 510. | |||||||

| This rod is for smaller rivers and gentle presentations. Don't be fooled however, it will deliver the long cast, and land a strong fish when challenged. Greatest with small to medium size flies, even a modest salmon, searun brown or rainbow will put a major grin on your jaw. Nice with heads around 35 feet. | As the fall rains begin and the rivers start to swell, the 13'4" #7/8 provides added distance and control. This model is still very light in hand and capable of comfortable 40 to 80 foot casts with all the popular mid size flies. This welter weight can deal with some wind, loading moderately deep, to mix it up with most steelhead and silver salmon. Use a short belly floating line for surface action, and loop on a short piece of sink tip as needed for a great day on the Dechutes, Bulkley or Sol Duc Rivers. Is designed to cast best with WindCutter 7/8/9, Skagit 500, AFS 460 or Airflo Skagit Compact 450. | |||||||

This rod is weapon of choice for the Beulah staff as well as many other dedicated two-hand steelhead fisherman. This rod can do the work of many 13'-14'0 rods, is forgiving enough to be a sound choice for the beginning spey caster and refined enough for those "in the know" casters with many years of spey experience behind them. This is the rod that put Beulah on the map with the coined phrase "Dude it's a $400.00 rod that casts, feels, and looks like a $700.00 rod". It is a very fast-action powerful rod that some casters might wish to over-line. Recommended lines: Beulah Elixir Spey 435, Skagit lines from 400-450 grains, Rio AFS 460. |

| The ECHO 13'0" #7/8 fly rod was designed as a light all round rod for medium to larger rivers that don't require casts much over 100 feet. It is a medium stiff medium action rod. It is designed for Steelhead and Atlantic salmon using any of the family of "Spey" casts. Designed to balance perfectly with the Airflo Delta 7/8. It can also be used with a sink tip or a Skagit head or Skagit line to get a fly down to the fish. The rod can handle a wide range of lines but feels good with a 7/8/9 WindCutter line that has a head length of 54-feet and a head weight of about 530 grains. If a Skagit type head is used the rod should be loaded with about 70 grains more than you would use with a "standard" floating line. A 450 Skagit without a Cheater and an 8-weight sinking tip will do the job. | ||||||

a popular combination that anglers cast for

the butts of the hair will form the forward facing wing. It is imperative to wrap the calf tail to the hook securely and evenly so that it does not turn on the hook shank as the deer hair body is spun on over the top of it. Lift the forward facing wing 45-degrees to the hook and then wrap the wing base for approximately 1/8" to stiffen it and hold it in place. Wings with larger volumes of hair create more resistance and thus more lift in the currents. Bulkier flies tend to wake better in rougher water. For the body choose |

off the tips. The base of the hair is much more hollow than
the tips and will spin and flare better. The black deer hair
is spun over the foundation crated by the calf tail. While
spinning the deer hair body, you may have to help it around the hook
because of the bulk created by the calf tail foundation. Pack
the deer hair bundles tightly. Trim body to a fat tapered
cigar shape. Denser bodies are slicker when trimmed and will slide
across the surface of the river more esily. |

In
New Zealand The Minister of Conservation agreed in principle last week with a Fish & Game New Zealand submission to ban the use of felt soled wading boots for freshwater fishing. The ban, yet to be approved and included in the proposed 2008/09 Anglers Notice for Fish and Game Regions, will be effective from 1 October 2008, and applies to freshwater sports fishing anglers in all New Zealand waterways, except those within the Taupo Fishery. The Lake Taupo fishery is administered by the Department of Conservation. The Department has advised that if a ban were introduced for the rest of the country it would recommend that the Minister approve a ban applying in Taupo. The ban applies to the use of felt-soled waders or footwear incorporating or having attached a sole of felted, matted or woven fibrous material when sports fishing. Felt-soled boots are considered a high risk vector or carrier of microscopic aquatic organisms like didymo. Preventing the spread of didymo is an important aspect of ban, but it is increasingly understood that felt soles are an effective vector for other microscopic pest organisms. While there are procedures for decontaminating felt soled waders, it is acknowledged that these are not practical in many situations. The proposed ban supports three of the objectives of the didymo long term management plan; to slow the spread of didymo and other freshwater pests throughout New Zealand, to protect valued sites and at-risk species, and to maintain the North Island free of didymo for as long as possible. Earlier this year Fish & Game New Zealand consulted widely with agencies and stakeholders on the proposed ban. Formal submissions from MAF Biosecurity, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment Southland all supported the proposed ban. Of the 43 submissions made through the Fish & Game website, 20 supported the ban, 17 opposed it and six supported the ban with various conditions. Some opposing the ban cited the safety provided by felt soled boots. Felt, or fibrous, soles provide a good grip on slippery boulders, and, for this reason, have become popular with anglers. However, other boots and sole types are available that offer alternative ways of maintaining grip on slippery surfaces. The use of felt soled waders was strongly discouraged during the 07/08 season, and the ban should come as no surprise to most anglers. Fish & Game New Zealand believes that banning the use of felt soles will immediately remove a high risk cause of spreading unwanted organisms like didymo among New Zealand’s waterways. Anglers must still “Check, Clean and Dry” all equipment that has been in contact with the water wet before moving to a new waterway. For more information: Bryce Johnson |
