| Sometimes anglers overlook the obvious. Traditional bucktail steelhead flies have remained popular for more than fifty years because they catch fish. On rivers such as the Deschutes, John Day, Clearwater, Grande Ronde, as well a a host of other inland streams more steelhead are caught on traditional bucktail patterns than any other type of fly. Most of these flies are fished close to the surface because that is where they are most easily seen by the steelhead. The lighter weight the fly, the closer to the surface of the water it fishes. Lantern Butt Steelhead Flies |
|

The butts on these flies are tied with Edge Bright, which is a strip of light enhancing fluorescent plastic. This plastic strip is wrapped over a foundation of silver tinsel. The rear edge of each wrap is left exposed. The plastic gathers light through the wide side and emits it through the narrow edge. The first steelhead flies that used this material were tied by Art Cohen for use on the Dean River. They were called Dean River Lanterns. We applied Edge Bright to a couple of popular flies in our area, the Sandy Spider and Rick's Revenge. This variation of the Rick's Revenge became known as the Fly du Jour. The Lantern Butt version of the Sandy Spider has been productive on our coastal rivers for Spring and Fall Chinook. Lantern Butts are especially effective during low light conditions or in turbid water. |

Fly du Jour |

The "Fly du Jour" is proven on all sizes of rivers and a wide range of water temperatures and conditions. It is one of the have-to-have flies no matter where you fish steelhead along the Pacific Rim. The Fly du Jour may be the best of all Deschutes summer steelhead flies for floating line fishing the majority of the season. Ninety percent of the season it is my point fly of choice. Just another purple and pink fly? Maybe. There are many. Purple and pink is a popular theme on the Deschutes with such patterns as Rick's Revenge and the Freight Train being the most popular examples. The Fly du Jour is different because it uses a revolutionary material called Edge Bright for the pink butt. Edge Bright is a material that gathers light through its broad side and magnifies it through its narrow edge. It is wrapped on the fly so that the rear edge of every wrap is exposed. Viewed from the rear this butt literally glows. The effect is further enhanced with the butt surrounded by a halo of dark purple materials. The pattern was an instant success when it was introduced in 1990. In the space of a couple of weeks two different groups of clients that didn't know each other called it the Fly du Jour (fly of the day), and that is how it got it's name. |

Sandy Spider |

| Our next encounter with the steelhead spider was a pattern concocted by Marty Sherman, who was then editor of Fly Fishing The West Magazine. Marty's fly was deadly on hatchery summer steelhead in the Salmon River near our shop. From 1981-1986 The Fly Fishing Shop fly tying kids, Troy Bachmann, Tony Barnes and Brian Silvey tied hundreds of dozens of them and it seemed like the bin was always empty. In about 1988 the fly tying material, Edge Bright hit the scene. It was a game changer. One of the flies that benefited from the addition of Edge Bright was the Sherman Spider. There was now something in this pattern that Chinooks found appealing. With the change in looks and personality came a new name, the Sandy Spider, named after the Sandy River. The Sandy Spider has proven to be very effective for both spring and fall Chinook, and for steelhead and Coho Salmon in several rivers. Unfortunately these flies are in short supply and will be available on a first come, first served basis. When they are gone, they are gone for the season. |
