Sage ONE Series Rods, Bubble Head Poppers |
![]() |
| WHAT SAGE SAYS: Smooth, precise and with an intentionally forgiving “sweet spot” that complements widely diverse casting styles, the ONE rod helps a fly fisher make a full range of close in and long-distance casts that hit the mark with equal ease. Due to its extraordinary sensitivity and light weight, the ONE rod is at home in the hands of seasoned casters as well as aspiring casters who benefit from the rod’s remarkable feedback-enhancing properties. Being able to feel exactly what the line is doing through all stages of a cast gives users ultimate control such that they can make the minute corrections needed in-cast to land the fly precisely where they want it. As part of Sage’s commitment to rod development and testing, they pitted the ONE rod against some of the world’s toughest game fish, under demanding fresh and saltwater conditions far exceeding anything most anglers would ever encounter. Over the course of its three-year development, the ONE rod took on such heavyweights as tarpon, bonefish and permit on trips to Florida, Belize and the Bahamas, redfish in Louisiana and even halibut in Alaska while pushing the rod to its limits. Fresh water proving grounds included Atlantic salmon on Canada’s Gaspé peninsula and the Tweed River in Scotland, steelhead in Washington state, giant musky in Wisconsin plus trout in Colorado, Montana and Chile. While casting to monster Chilean Browns under typically adverse conditions—throwing massive dry flies into or crossways against the constant winds—the ONE rod’s extraordinary blend of strength and finesse was on full display. As one of Sage's fortunate researchers stated on the trip, “the rod becomes a true extension of your arm, allowing you to place the fly exactly where you want without having to think about the cast.” High praise from a man who is owner and Chief Guide at one of Chile’s premier fishing lodges. |

WHAT OUR TESTS SHOW:
The One Series is so new that no one, even Sage knows what their customers will think about their newest rods. Our initial back yard tests with the Shop Rats (shop owners, employees, guides, etc.) proved to be pretty positive. Everyone liked them. We threw 4, 5, 6 & 8-weights. George Cook picked the lines and reels. There were a lot of long skinny loops to be observed. These rods will enhance your performance. They are also exceptionally good looking. ON THE RIVER (07/24-07/27 The video above was shot during this period.): We spent three days of last week on the Deschutes River. Part of the time we were trout fishing, most of the time we were hunting for early season steelhead. We found both trout and steelhead. All of the trout time was spent testing and analyzing a 590-4 ONE. For a short period a 590-4 TCX was also used for comparison. The TCX was as advertised, faster action than the ONE rod. However, even during some major league winds, the ONE was easier to time and actually developed high line speed easier. There is nothing to prepare you for the casting accuracy you will be able to achieve with a ONE rod. This is not Madison Avenue hype. This is fact. Even if you are a moderately skilled caster, you will be able to feel and see the difference. If you are a skilled caster, the recognition of the superior design and technology use in the construction of the 590-4 ONE will be instantaneous and dramatic. This rod delivers more casting precision than any other rod we have ever used. It is also a very practical design, in that it is a true 5-weight rod and has a sweet-spot that is most comfortable exactly in the ranges where most trout fishing occurs (15' to 50'). We used 5X leader and never broke off a fish. The tip of this rod really helps protect fine leaders. |
| KONNETIC TECHNOLOGY: In 2004, Sage introduced Generation 5 Technology (G5), a breakthrough in its day that continues to be the proven platform of our top performance rod families. In our continuing effort to explore and develop new technologies, over the past several years Sage has extensively tested a wide range of construction methods and materials, including nano-particle resin systems. We’ve concluded, as of today, that Sage’s existing proprietary resin and carbon fiber system is far superior for crafting the high performance fly rods that anglers the world over have come to rely on. However, never satisfied to merely test new technologies as they come along, Sage has developed a new, superior technology all our own. Introducing the most significant evolution in fly rod development since Generation 5. Sage’s new Konnetic technology combines proprietary aerospace-grade materials with innovative manufacturing methods and processes. The impossibly lighter rods built utilizing this technology provide ultimate line control and accuracy due to enhanced “tip-to-hand” sensitivity and feed back, yet still retain Sage’s renowned power and durability. Konnetic technology incorporates a new composite material that was developed using an optimized ratio of Sage’s proprietary resin to high modulus carbon fiber. Our Advanced Modulus Positioning System (AMPS) is a process that places the carbon materials to exacting tolerances for the greatest blank strength and efficient energy transfer throughout the shaft. Using our High Compression Molding (HCM) process, the blank’s carbon fibers are compacted for optimum density and precise alignment, simultaneously fusing the 50% lighter all-carbon fiber inner core. The result of tireless coordination between our chief rod designer, engineers and production teams, Konnetic technology was refined over years of research both in the lab and on the water stressing hundreds of prototypes. |

By innovating and mastering the extensive production steps required
to unlock the potential of the advanced aerospace-grade materials
used in Konnetic technology, Sage has created a highly responsive
and robust blank with significantly enhanced torsional stability and
minimal vibration for casts that track effortlessly and accurately.

Before there was Czk Nymphing, or strike indicators, there was just
plain old deep nymphing on our local rivers by our local anglers. It
was and still is very effective, but is especially effective when
long, light rods are used with fine leaders and multiple flies of
many sizes. Match the day's behavioral insect drift for size. Make
your flies look like they are attached to nothing. Keep them near
the bottom and develop the "feel" and load up with trout. The 4100-4
ONE will help you put your flies in the center of the feeding lane
and "feel" the sip. Rod weight: 3 ounces. |

Mark,
Here's an Early Edition ONE Rod report from My Buddy Greg Thomas
(Editor of Fly Rod & Reel). He sent this to me to use as I see fit.
He was on the Hoo Doo River on the Alaska peninsula. Josh will
remember this area as a fair bit South of Mel Gillis's place on the
Sandy River. Thought the Fine Folks at the Fly Fishing Shop should
get this FIRST to use as they(you) see fit Good Sir. The "QUOTE"
below would be appropriate "Greg used the Rod recently in Alaska and
it preformed really well on King's to 30 LB.s". |

| In June, 2008, Gene and Patty Gramzow aboard the boat Siria were fifty yards from Patty Barnes and I aboard the boat La Nonconforma. All of us were were catching lots of dorado. The fish averaged 18-25 pounds and were ferocious. Gene was using a popper and seemed to be catching a few more fish than the rest of us. I yelled over and asked what he was using. He said, "A Bubble Head, it has a hole in the face and spurts water out of the top of the head. Come on over and I'll give you one!" During the next two days, I wore the fly out catching dorado after dorado. |

Bubble Heads are true works of art. You will marvel at the craftsmanship
used in the construction of these flies. The pearlescent scale pattern
paint is covered with a flawless coat of crystal clear epoxy. We have
seen nothing else to compare. They also have proven to be very durable.
One 3/0 bubble Head landed over thirty dorado for me. The Blue/Silver Bubble Head is in a standard fly flying fish flying fish color. Blue/Silver is also good for mimicking certain kinds of mackerel and herring. These forage fish are often most active in the fading light of evening, especially along the edges of Sargasso paddies or kelp beds. |

| Olive/Silver has been the best color combination during morning and mid-day dorado quests in the Sea of Cortez. This is especially true when you are chumming up dorado that are hanging around patches of Sargasso. On the average, no other fly beats a Mark's Sardina in this situation. But, there are times during the brightest part of the day when a bubble Head has an edge. Often dorado will attack it as soon as it hits the water or on the first strip. During these situations I use the same Rio Outbound Intermediate line that I use with the Sardinas. Stripping the instant the fly hits the water often gives best results. |

| This fly is pearl white with a dark gray scale-pattern back, and is a color combination which has been very good during cloudy periods when fishing blue water. White may be the best color for fishing sandy shore lines. Bubble Heads are proven flies for rooster fish, especially during periods of rough water. a floating Rio Outbound is a great line for this work. A medium length, stout leader will make the job easier and more productive. We like to wind-drift in a boat and fire casts toward the beach into water that averages about 3-6 feet deep. Strip aggressively. Long caster have an advantage. |
