Deschutes Steelhead Flies For Early Season Heard all the Steelhead Flies in Maupin got eaten by Moths! Don't worry we've got you covered with an outrageously huge selection. The time is close. Get prepared! Fish Counts at The Dalles Dam |

| A couple of different years we floated the Deschutes during the last week in June for trout and wound up catching good numbers of steelhead. One year we caught seven in two days and two of the fish already had red gill plates. Steelhead fishing in June on the Deschutes is always hit or miss, but there is no competition from other anglers, and the fish are usually pretty naive when you find them. Early season steelhead are fresh, rested and grabby. Normally brighter fish like brighter flies with touches of fluorescent colors. Based on last year's incredible run, early season summer steelhead returns to the Willamette Valley streams, and early Columbia River dam counts, the coming Deschutes steelhead season looks pretty good. | ||

Fly du Jour |

|
The "Fly du Jour" is proven on all sizes of rivers and a wide range of water temperatures and conditions. It is one of the have-to-have flies no matter where you fish steelhead along the Pacific Rim. The Fly du Jour may be the best of all Deschutes summer steelhead flies for floating line fishing the majority of the season. Ninety percent of the season it is my point fly of choice. Just another purple and pink fly? Maybe. There are many. Purple and pink is a popular theme on the Deschutes with such patterns as Rick's Revenge and the Freight Train being the most popular examples. The Fly du Jour is different because it uses a revolutionary material called Edge Bright for the pink butt. Edge Bright is a material that gathers light through its broad side and magnifies it through its narrow edge. It is wrapped on the fly so that the rear edge of every wrap is exposed. Viewed from the rear this butt literally glows. The effect is further enhanced with the butt surrounded by a halo of dark purple materials. The pattern was an instant success when it was introduced in 1990. In the space of a couple of weeks two different groups of clients that didn't know each other called it the Fly du Jour (fly of the day), and that is how it got it's name. |

Golden Demon This fly came from New Zealand in about 1933 and was modified by Fred Peet for Atlantic Salmon on the Cains River in New Brunswick. It was brought to the West Coast where it was again modified by C. Jim Pray of Eureka, California. It became popular in Southern Washington and Northern Oregon around 1950 and has stayed reasonably popular ever since. |

| This fly was originated by Dan Callahan on the North Umpqua River. However the "Green Butt" is proven on all sizes of rivers and a wide range of water temperatures and conditions. It is one of | ||||
| the have-to-have flies no matter where you fish steelhead along the Pacific Rim. We have modernized this classic fly by having it tied with the latest materials on gold colored Alec Jackson Steelhead Iron hooks. Don't worry, this version is thoroughly proven. We've been using Green Butt Skunks on various colors of hooks for years. The ones tied on gold hooks just seem to catch more fish, so we're passing the secret on to you. Patriot Quoted from Steelhead Fly Fishing by Trey Combs, "The bright pattern was called the Patriot. I had used nothing else for three days. My first steelhead of the trip, a hen of nine pounds, had struck the fly as hard as any steelhead in my memory. The impact knocked the reel's pawls out of alignment, and only by frantically palming the free-running spool was I able to prevent a massive override." |
![]() |
| The pattern recipe in Trey's book calls for a hackle of dark purple, but the one Frank gave to me in about 1985 had a hackle that was blue. It caught several steelhead before I lost it to a big colored-up buck on the Deschutes. Over the years the Patriot has proven to be a very reliable pattern to try when fishing with a floating line while the sun is still on the water. It can be especially good when the water clears in late fall. MB |
| The other evening, I opened my fly box just as the sun was leaving the water. The Patriot stood out against the background of darker flies that surrounded it. It was like it was begging for attention. So it got tied to the end of my leader and got a hard pull on the very first cast in water that had already been fished by another angler. Of course it was much different colored that all of the rest of the flies we had used. Sometimes it's good to be different. MB |

The best flies become classics simply because they work. The Purple Peril is one of those flies that seems to take steelhead from varying watersheds and under a wide range of water conditions. First tied by legendary Northwest Washington angler Ken McLeod in the mid '60's it has taken steelhead from California to British Columbia. This somber colored fly is particularly reliable for Redband Steelhead in the Columbia River tributaries east of the Cascade Mountains. As fly tiers turn more to the glitz and glitter of synthetic materials to create their |

"magic-bullets", the Purple Peril remains as proof that bright colors and lots of flash aren't always the ingredients for success. Many takes on the Purple Peril are very soft. The fish is just there with no perceptible shock. This leads me to believe that many of these fish would have been too timid to respond as favorably to a brighter fly. |

2/0 in the Clear Water and in some British Columbia Rivers. My experience concludes that dark purple materials tie more successful Purple Perils than bright purple materials. I choose purple hackles that are died over brown rather than white feathers. This give the fly a deep, dark purple shade. A plump silhouette achieved with a medium fat chenille body is proven. Size #4 and #6 flies are dressed with #14 tinsel. Size #2 flies are dressed with #12 tinsel and larger flies are dressed with #10 tinsel. This gives a pronounced segmentation and contrasting flash to the body. |

Larger Ambush Lines for Spey,
Switch and Saltwater Applications NOW IN STOCK !!! |
| Since it’s
introduction one year ago, Ambush Triangle Taper fly line has created a
dedicated following of Switch, Scandi, and Skagit rod followers. Responding to burgeoning demand, Royal Wulff products has now introduced new, heavier line weights in the Ambush lineup. Originally produced in 4-8 weight sizes, Ambush Triangle Taper is now also available in 9 – 13 weight, to deliver crisp roll casting performance from single-handed rods and shorter double-handed rods. Designed with a short, 20-22 foot head, marked by a color change in the line, from lime green to blue. This “change point” creates a visual reference point for intuitive casting. Front-loaded with a thin running line, it delivers effortless roll casts from short to long distances. And, like all Triangle Tapers, it shoots like a bullet. "This spring I received a prototype 550-grain Ambush Line and installed it on my Sage 7126-4 TCX (DeathStar) rod, then attached 13' of T-11 to the front-end loop. It was fished for the next three days in adverse upstream-windy conditions. The water was higher than normal and the best run was on river-right, which demanded a left-hand-up approach (my weakest casting possition). This setup turned out to be surprisingly easy to cast, and Ambush Lines will be a big hit with beginners and experienced Spey casters alike. It slices through the wind, and is remarkably easy to use in very tight quarters. Of course that is what it was designed for in the first place." MB |

Stud Service! Hard Bite Boot Studs can be installed on any new Simms Wading Shoes. Hard Bite Boot Studs provide the best wading traction available. Sorry, not available for cleat-sole boot-foot waders. |
|
Let's face it, the riverbeds in the Pacific Northwest provide some of the most challenging wading surfaces to be found anywhere. Long ago anglers found that studded soles on their wading shoes made wading safer and more comfortable. Tire studs with tungsten carbide inserts became the standard wading sole studs. Now Simms has revolutionized wading shoe traction by providing two new wading devices that make the tire-stud obsolete. They are the Hard Bite Stud and Hard Bite Star Cleat. At the Fly Fishing Shop, we have tested both types of devices extensively on some of the roughest steelhead rivers in the country, the Deschutes, Clackamas and Umpqua. We know how to install these devices in patterns that will make you nearly invincible on any river. Remember that good fly casting and presentation starts from the bottom of your feet. |
