Shad are still pouring through the ladders at
both Bonneville and The Dalles dams at the rate of about 100-250,000 a
day. Annual count to date is over 4,000,000 at each dam.
They eat flies. They pull hard on 6-weight gear. Talked to my old friend Jeff Middagh and he disclosed that day before yesterday he landed a 34" steelhead after a 20 minute battle. It was taken from one of the local rivers on a waking fly. Two casts later he landed an eight pound, very bright Chinook. That is only the second |
| Oregon Chinook we have heard of that was landed on a surface
fly. The other fish was landed in 1966 by Forest Wilson.
There have been reports of a few 14"-15" trout in the local streams. There are lots of small trout. Bring your #3-weight & small dry flies. Within the Hoodland Community there are nearly 100 miles of class-one streams. Class-one is a designation given to streams that give access to salmon and steelhead. These streams have populations of wild rainbow and cutthroat trout. Each stream is unique. Most are on public land. Access is easy. The Carpenter Ant Queen migration is full swing. The Termite Queen hatch has just started. Local trout eat both, especially in the high lakes. Lakes surrounded by timber get the best hatches of terrestrial insects. Don't forget to include a beetle pattern in your fly box if you are a lake fisher. The Hex Hatch will become a big deal on certain high lakes around first of July. Roslyn Lake gets one heck of a hex hatch if you need a quicky. The lower 100 miles of the Deschutes River has been awesome dry fly fishing for Redside trout. PMD's, PED's, caddis, aquatic moths and little stones have all been in the mix. A Royal Wulff or Humpy in the fast water can also produce explosive action. John Day River smallmouth bass are eating everything in sight. One hundred fish days are not uncommon. |

The World Goes
Fly Fishing Since World War II, U.S. fly rod manufactures have dominated and set the standard for the rest of the world. They started with European designs and added innovative engineering and materials technology. There have been a steady string of innovations that have made our fly rods lighter, stronger and faster each and every year. There is little doubt American made rods are the most copied fly rods in the world. They are also some of the most expensive rods in the world. But, you get what you pay for. Once again, when it comes to craftsmanship, the American big-5 fly rod makers have set the standard. It is evident that manufacturing plants in Korea are able to produce rods with similar casting and handling characteristics of the American rods. It is also becoming apparent that craftsmanship and quality control in these Korean factories is very good. What is now emerging is that Korean engineers have a few tricks up their sleeves, such as nano-technology where coating graphite blanks takes on more meanings than just cosmetics. Certain series of Korean rods really cast. These rods are making their way to the American markets under several different brand names. These marketing companies are usually American owned. Many of these rods are designed in this country. In many cases, the rods are designed by a team that incorporates designers and engineers from both sides of the Pacific. Its a two heads are better than one approach. That is the way it seems to be at TFO. The rods are conceptually designed by Lefty Kreh. The materials engineering and actual construction is done in Korea. This Korean team works exclusively with Lefty Kreh and TFO. Together they have produced (4) series of rods that are extremely serviceable and value conscious. Series-1 two-piece rods sell for $90-$100. Pro Series four-piece rods sell for $140-$160. That is $160 for a four-piece tarpon rod. Suddenly tarpon rods and tarpon fishing got a lot more affordable. Spey rods in this series come in (4) models that cost $299.95 each. The TiCr Series is even more interesting. It uses a titanium-chromium clear coat over the graphite blank to give it impact resistance. This coat also greatly speeds up the recovery of the blank. This enables the blank to apply energy to the fly line in a very short, sharp burst. The result is incredibly tight loops traveling very fast. The most amazing trait of this series is how easy it is to time these rods. This enables the caster to reach out further and refine his accuracy. Over the clear coat is another coating that is smooth, non-reflective black. Will these TiCr Series rods hold up and perform in the field? We presume so. We will know more about them after our July saltwater trip to Loreto, Mexico. I'm taking TiCr's in #8, #10, #12 weight sizes. I'm also taking the latest models of Sages and Winstons. The TFO TiCr rods will be judged against some very high classed competition. There isn't anything that builds skills and technologies quicker than competition....or just plain old fishing! |

Fork Outfitters' rods are what fly fishermen have been looking for...a
fine piece of equipment at an attractive price. I believe the TiCr
models will satisfy even the most exacting fisherman."![]() |
| "Lefty
Kreh is an American fly fishing icon. He is the best known fly
fisherman in the world. He may be the most knowledgeable fly
angler, period. He has proven himself as one of the most
talented fly casters of all time. He spends a lot of time in the field
and has caught many different species of fish with flies. Years ago
the fly fishing fraternity found out that if you wanted to know about
any fly fishing destination, send Lefty Kreh as your point man and the
report would be detailed and factual. He has a very practical approach
to the sport of fly fishing fostered by 50 years of experience and a
very good memory. His "Signature" rods deliver
tremendous line speed and accuracy at a very fair price. After a
long period of casting in the back parking lot, I bought a set of
three TiCr Series rods (#8, #10 & #12) for my next saltwater trip
and even though this whole set cost less than one of my other rods, I
am not sure they will be relegated to the position of back-up." Fish long & prosper, Mark Bachmann |

Keys Fishing Report
Late June, Capt Chris
Morrison here with the Florida Keys update.
Some big tarpon still moving on the ocean side and the backcountry small to medium fish are jamin. We were hooking tarpon on fly all day today for a total of 5 caught and 9 that ate the fly. Many permit are on the flats and are easy on crabs and available fly targets for those with the courage. Has been pretty cloudy the last 3 days but before that we were catching some nice bones. I would say that fishing is very good right now and the backcountry tarpon and permit fishing should be good all summer.

Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fishing Report Tuna! Tuna! Tuna! Tough to know what to lead off with, but the yellowfin fatties were definitely on the chew. Anglers headed out 25 miles before they found the porpoise school; and 60 seconds after the teaser hit the water it was tuna on the fly! All rods were bendo for a couple of hours. By the time the scales settled, they had enough sashimi to feed the full hotel at cocktail hour. Rooster fishing has also been excellent in the near shore waters. Ladyfish, pompano and lookdowns are on to the catch list. The buoys up at Punta Pescadero were producing double digit catches of dorado earlier in the week. Many are heading north. On the marlin scene, it was Katy-Bar-the-Door. They bit almost anything that was drug behind the boat. All in all you could safely say that the East Cape was going off big time this week. Info from: Baja On The Fly. AIR & SEA - Water temperature 70-84 Air temperature 78-96 Humidity about 25% Wind: Calm Conditions: Clear Visibility 12 miles |
