Dick Bushnell with 30" bonefish. Casting About
A group of our friends had excellent fishing at Turneffe Flats, Belize earlier this month.  That's Dick Bushnell holding a 30" bonefish.  Mike Owens caught a 25 pound Permit.  Spring time proved to be great for fishing.  The weather was great and everyone caught lots of fish.  We will be putting together a group
for next spring.  If you are interested, be sure to get your name on the sign-up list.
We fished the METOLIUS River this past week.  It is alive and doing well under an exclusive wild fish management plan that protects the native rainbow population.  We found lots of rainbows in the 12" to 18" range.  The day was over-cast and blustery, so probably wasn't optimum hatch conditions.  However, there were #16 Olive Stoneflies everywhere.  A hatch of Pale Morning Duns was followed by a hatch of Baetis.  There were a very few Green Drakes. All our fish were caught with dry flies.

Best flies: #16 Olive Stimulator, #16 PMD Emerger & #18 Baetis Thorax Dun.
Patty Barnes with a wild Deschutes River Brown Trout. On the way back from the METOLIUS we stopped at the Lower Bridge Rest Area  on the Deschutes River for a break in driving.  This middle part of the Deschutes is very low flow due to irrigation withdrawal. However there were fish rising in the slowest water.   A good Baetis hatch was coming off.  It was followed by a Pale Morning Dun hatch. Since we had left our rods rigged up, our quick stop turned into an hour and a half. We caught several beautiful Brown Trout up to 15".

You should never travel un-armed in trout country!

If you talk to most anyone about the Lower Deschutes, the conversation would normally center around the Salmon Fly hatch.  Don't forget that there is always a lot of other fisheries going on in this 100 mile long stretch of river.   The Salmon Fly Hatch starts at the mouth of the river and progresses upstream.  There are other important, productive hatches behind, intermingled with and ahead of the Salmon fly hatch.  There are Baetis, Blue Wing Olives, Pink Alberts, Green Drakes, Yellow Sallies and Alder Flies just to name  Mark Bachmann with Deschutes River Spring Chinook.
a few.  And if you get bored with trout or jaded on dry fly fishing, there are those real hard pulling, skill challenging Spring Nookers to test your metal.
Don't forget your 2-hander.
Lori Christensen hooked to a Clear Lake Brook Trout.

The Cascade High Lakes are open and stocked.  ODFW has out did themselves by planting some real trophies here and there.  Plus there are some real nice hold-overs as well.  So far the best local lakes are Lawrence, Clear, Trillium and Timothy. We are available for private consultation.   1-800-266-3971.

As it turns out in our spring travels we never found anything better than home.  The Sandy River is a jewel among jewels.  There are still some very bright Wild Winter Steelhead to be had along with a fair number of hatchery Summer Steelhead and Spring Chinook.  Yah, it rains here a lot, but that's what keeps everything so fresh and green.  Trout season starts May 26.  They are all

natives.  The rules are catch & release, flies & lures only.  Can't say what you will find for numbers or sizes.  We are going through the management thing that the fishers of the Metolius went through several years ago.  If what we saw there is an indication of what is to happen here, we think you will enjoy it.
