| Turneffe Flats Lodge,
Belize Patty and I joined a group of fishing friends at Turneffe Flats from 05/04 to 05/11. It was our 9th trip to Belize, but our first trip to Turneffe Island which is the largest live coral atoll in the western hemisphere. It is |

renowned for its large schools of bonefish and permit. Since it was our first time there, we didn't know what to expect. In retrospect the lodge and it's staff exceeded our expectations. The lodge site is on the edge of the reef with flats running for miles in two directions. It is a spectacular setting. The buildings and grounds are beautifully maintained. Our room was the most comfortable that we have stayed in in |
| Belize. Every meal was excellent and the staff at this resort are very friendly and attentive. Some of the the fishing guides at Turneffe are legendary. Each one proved to be patient and highly skilled. The wild |

card proved to be the weather which was very unstable during our whole stay in Belize. The wind was blowing pretty hard when we arrived and it blew every day we were there. This was by far the windiest trip we have made to Belize. It made casting difficult and the fish hard to see. There are thousands of bonefish on Turneffe Atoll. It has the best population we have seen in Belize. However a constant barrage of changing weather fronts during our stay made them jittery and dull. We all caught some bones and some short periods were quite good, but the weather was a constant interference. Our group fished |
| very hard. The best day of fishing was had by Mike Senatra and Bill Bell with guide Mark Hyde. They found a school of tarpon in a tiny hole in the mangroves and hooked eight fish in an afternoon. These fish ranged from about 15-70 pounds. Mike dubbed this spot "Tarpon in a Barrel". Mike invited me to join him there one day. By then the fish hat been worked over and some had moved out. I stuck my only tarpon of the trip with a 15' cast and battled for a long period before the hook pulled loose. It was 30-40 pounds. Then Mike hooked one that was 60-70 pounds and it burrowed back into the Mangroves and finally came unpinned. It was kind of like heavy cover |

large mouth bass fishing, except the fish were much, much larger. These juvenile tarpon are residents. Very large tarpon of up to 200 pounds migrate through the channels on Turneffe Atoll June through August. There are literally thousands of bonefish at Turneffe. Most of the bonefish on the flats are in the 1-4 pound range. However bonefish to 13 pounds are available. Turneffe is famous for its permit fishing. Here permit often travel in schools of 50-100 fish. Both bonefish and permit are resident year round. The mangrove edges also contain a very good population of several kinds of snappers. The largest I caught on this trip was about 5 pounds. We are already scheming on a trip back to Turneffe next year. Let us know if you would like to go along? |
