New Info On Oxbow
1
This year marks the 12th Sandy River 'Clave. To our knowledge, The Sandy River Spey Clave is the largest gathering of Spey Casters in the Western Hemisphere. All of the best Spey Tackle manufacturers are there. The top Spey Casters in the Pacific Northwest will give On-The-Water Presentations and will act as your personal instructors during Friday's FREE Beginner's class.
This year the Sandy River Spey Clave is totally integrated. Instead of "Ladies Day" on Friday, as in the past three Spey Claves, Friday has turned into "Beginner's Day", which focuses on introducing new anglers into the sport of Spey Fishing. Male and female Instructors/Presenters will be mixed into all three days of the scheduled on-the-water programs.
Free Catered Food has been added for lunch all three days. There will be a free booklet on “Spey casting tackle and techniques” and there is a no charge casting school at the 'Clave on Friday. We are all members of the “Spey Community.” The essence of the Sandy River Spey 'Clave is as much social as it is educational. See you there, friends. More info...

Especially YOU Are Invited To This Party!!!
Here is a list of people who will be offering free instruction on the water.

Pictured above is the west wall of our show room where 32 different models of Spey rods are on display. There are many more models in the stock-room that won't fit on the wall. Steelhead fishing is a passion at The Fly Fishing Shop. We are surrounded by steelhead and salmon rivers; huge rivers, big rivers, medium rivers and small rivers. These rivers offer a diversity of angling opportunities and challenges. That is why our selection of Spey rods is so large, so you can have just the right rod for every situation. Other reasons are that we really like fishing with Spey rods. We like experimenting with Spey rods and learning about Spey rods. We like playing with Spey rods and talking to other Spey fishers about Spey rods. We might be called Spey obsessed. Spey rods are very cool. And we have cast every rod pictured here and caught fish on most.

Sage 2-Handed Fly Rods
ONE Z-AXIS TCX VXP

We have been Sage dealers for over 30-years and have a lot of miles on the water with Sage Rods in our hands. Many great trophies and many great memories have been collected. No body beats Sage in design, craftsmanship or service after the sale. Sage is constantly refining their rods as new construction materials and casting styles evolve. They have been the leader for over 30-years, and are still the fly rod company that all others are compared to.

Winston Spey Rods
Boron IIX & Boron IIMX Spey Rods

Mark Bachmann landing a steelhead with a Winston 8133-4 BIIX rod...

Winston introduced their revolutionary BIIX Series of two-handers in 2005 with two models. That same year Winston's head rod designer, Sam Drukman added expert Spey caster, Andre Scholz to the Winston team.
Several more models have been added since then. Winston Spey rods are smooth as butter and each model will cast a wide range of line weights and fit a wide range of casting and fishing styles. Winston Boron rods are very lightweight, but incredibly durable. All models of Winston Spey Rods are very popular with the 8133-4 BIIX (13' 3" #7) being one of the most popular two-handers of all time..

Temple Fork Outfitters Spey Rods

Deer Creek Series

Temple Fork Outfitters rods are designed in the United States and production of the rods is done in a proprietary plant in South Korea. This approach has some distinct advantages in that the best technology is used, but at reduced production costs, which brings great value to the consumer. Lefty Kreh is the chief designer of the Pro Series. Several years ago Mike Kinney and Bob Meiser joined the staff and introduced the Deer Creek Series. The Pro Series are Plain-Jane rods that are perfect for entry level casters and for guides who furnish gear. The Deer Creek Series are muscle rods with refined cosmetics that will appeal to Spey casters of all skill levels. Deer Creek rods offer incredible performance at mid-range prices.

Echo Rods

Echo3 Dec Hogan Signature TR Series

Designed and produced by tournament caster, Tim Rajeff these three series of beautiful Spey rods spent many years in the making. To say that Tim is a perfectionist is an understatement. The Echo "TR" rods are the culmination of countless hours of tinkering and testing. There are six models of traditional action Spey rods in the TR Series that range from 12' to 15', which covers nearly every salmon & steelhead situation in North America. There is also a series of very "classic-action" Spey rods were produced in collaboration with popular steelhead angler and writer, Dec Hogan.
The latest Echo series is called Echo3. They are lighter in the hand, with a finish and appointments second to none.

Latest Info On Oxbow Park
Oxbow Park is built on volcanic lahar (volcanic mud flow) composed of sand (volcanic ash) that buried an ancient forest. This material likely covered the whole canyon to the level of Oxbow Park at the time when Lewis & Clark explored the mouth of the river in 1805. Since then with the event of each winter storm, the river has been eroding this layer away, carrying multi-billions of cubic yards to the Columbia River, and ultimately to the Pacific Ocean. No doubt that particles of Sandy River sand are mixed into most California beaches. During the years of this erosion process, it has revealed at least two layers of forest buried in the river bed. The filling and excavating of the canyon has happened many times. Last winters storms took some more of the camp ground, including one of the new toilet/shower facility, and some more of Group Area "A". "Instruction Beach" as the Clave Pool has come to be called has greatly expanded in the upstream end. A sizeable log jam has formed in the center of the beach, but it will not impede access to the water.
In the 40+ years that I have been been fishing the lower Sandy River the geological changes to the canyon have been more dramatic than could be imagined. Even during periods of fishable water flows, favored runs come and go. During times of winter floods the river channel can change from one side of the canyon floor to the other. It is likely that Oxbow Park as we know it, is near its end. Another winter like 1964, 1996 or 1997 could take the entire camp ground.  This may also be the last Sandy River Spey Clave, because in the near future Oxbow might become too small.
This year the staff at Oxbow has worked through the winter and spring adapting the park to an ever smaller floor plan. They have done a great job against long odds. At present there are  59 camp spots available.
Opening And Closing Times
The new electronically controlled gate opens at 6:30 A.M. and closes at 8:30 P.M. After closing time, you can get out, but will not be able to re-enter until 6:30 in the morning.
New Trail To Beach
The trail from the upper level a Group Area "A" to Instruction Beach follows the course of the old one, but is a little longer this year. It is easy to negotiate and a really good bridge spans the back-channel. Getting to Instruction Beach to view programs this year without wearing waders should be no problem. You will want bring waders for trying out the many rod and line combinations, however.
Fishing
The Sandy River is in perfect shape. Summer steelhead are in Oxbow Park. Chinooks are starting to show. Early and late are best on bright days. Sinking tip lines prevail. Water is very clear.

Free Coffee
Batdorf & Bronson Coffee roasters will be attending the 3 day event beginning Friday May 18th and ending Sunday May 20th and will provide free coffee for all in attendance.

Cosmic Harmony Assured At Oxbow Park
I guess most of us would vote for "Cosmic Harmony", if we even thought about it very much. Apparently the "Rock Lady" devotes a vast amount of time contemplating harmony in the cosmos. She toils endless hours building sculptures of "Rock People" along the shores of the Sandy River in Oxbow Park.  Legions of "Rock People" are often arranged in vast arrays she calls "Cosmic Harmony Generators".  A huge "Cosmic Harmony Generator" inhabits the upstream end of "Instruction Beach", which is at "Group Area A", the central point of Sandy River Spey Clave 2012. A few of these rock sculptures inevitably will collide with errant D-loops. It is our hope that participants will be mindful of these sculptures, and allow "Cosmic Harmony" to prevail.

Teeny Landing Hand
"The Landing Hand is an extremely useful and user-friendly tool. But I think it does the greater favor for fish. By providing more control during the landing process, my Landing Hand helps me protect and release them safely. Everyone who fishes should have one of these, for both fresh and saltwater." JimTeeny
"This is the most convenient, best designed fish grabber I've ever used. Every angler should carry one. They help subdue and release fish quickly, thus promoting survival." Mark Bachmann

The Teeny Landing Hand is shock-corded, which makes it easy to be attached to your person. I fold mine and tuck it under my wading belt for easy access.

The Teeny Landing Hand is easy to use. Slip your hand inside and grab large large fish by the tail. Fish grabbed this way are subdued quickly.

Hold your fish securely and remove the hook for catch & release.
This soft, structured mesh bag improves your grip on trout, salmon, steelhead, bonefish and all other game fish. You'll land fish more quickly while exerting less pressure and reduce the mortality rate of the fish you choose to release.

About Spey Casting

Spey Casting Classes

PolyLeaders

Josh's AntiRevolution Spey Swivel
"Offering a new level of inner peace for all Spey fishers." Some days of casting with a Spey outfit are easier than others. Days when you get a lot of tangles in your shooting line are never easy. Casts which produce balls of knitting jammed up against your first stripping guide impair your concentration and pretty quick other faucets of your casts suffer as well.
Most Spey casts involve circular motions with the rod, which have a habit of twisting the line. Some types casts may put a full revolution of twist in your line each cast. As you work down stream through a piece of water, possibly fifty or more revolutions in your line may result. Pretty quick your shooting line is so twisted that executing a cast without tangles becomes nearly impossible.
There are several methods used for un-twisting a Spey line. Undoubtedly you have your method. Some while back, Josh Linn decided to eliminate the problem altogether. After a lot of trial and adaptation, Josh perfected a way of installing a small barrel swivel between the shooting head and the shooting line. This eliminates line twist and make tangles in a shooting line virtually a thing of the past.
My prediction is that the AntiRevolution Spey Swivel will be the most copied Spey innovation of the next 10-years, because if you don't have one in each Spey line, you will have tangles. No one wants more tangles. The AntiRevolution Spey Swivel is the best answer for reducing tangles caused by line twist.
You can make own. We have all of the proven parts, and will teach you how.
Each new Spey Shooting Head / Shooting Line Combo purchased during the next 30-days will include a Josh's AntiRevolution Swivel installed at no extra charge.
Josh's AntiRevolution Spey Swivels are all hand assembled. Each swivel is thoroughly inspected. Each loop system is made in our store and is tested to withstand 30-pounds of pull-pressure. No claim is made beyond that.
Fishing tackle succumbs to wear and tear and user errors. It is up to the user to inspect his/her tackle continually during each fishing cycle. Every one of our guides and fishing employees has tested this swivel system extensively under actual steelhead fishing conditions, and their feed-back and input has been very helpful and greatly appreciated. It is easy when you live in Oregon.
You just go to your community rivers and test stuff on fresh steelhead. Simple as that!
