Green River, Utah: Big Flies, Big Fish, Big Fun
By Bret Carlson

The appearance of salmon flies on the Deschutes and green drakes on the Metolius provide some respite for Oregonians who’ve strained their eyesight through too many Baetis and midge hatches. However, if you really want to give your dry fly eyes a break – and your forearms a workout – the Green River in Utah will likely do the trick.
The Green is a classic tailwater fishery, born with the completion of the Flaming Gorge Dam in 1963. Brown trout were planted in the river at this time, and have –

to say the very least – thrived. The browns – combined with introduced populations of rainbows and cutthroat – make up one of the most prolific trout rivers in the United States. In the seven mile “canyon” section immediately below the dam, populations range from 16,000 to 20,000 trout per mile! Thanks to a fecund biomass especially rich in scuds, the fish grow large fast, adding two inches per month in the spring and early summer. Many fish eclipse 20”, and fish exceeding 24” are commonly seen...though not commonly caught.
While the Green is home to many notable hatches

(including memorable blue-winged olive hatches in early spring), terrestrials provide a singular opportunity to take large fish on large flies. Hoppers, crickets, and variety of ants and beetles all provide large food fodder – but it’s the cicadas that bring the big fellas to the surface.  Cicadas are the largest member of the suborder Homoptera, which include leafhoppers, treehoppers and aphids. As nymphs, they live underground and feed on the roots of trees and shrubs.   When they leave their burrows, they climb the trunk of a tree, their skins split open, and mature cicadas emerge. Their recognizable nocturnal tune is a siren song to trout and anglers alike.

Green River aficionados rely on a number of patterns to mimic the cicadas. Favorites include the McFly Style Cicada, the Noble Chernobyl, and the Marshmellow and Calf Wing Cicadas.

Fishing from a drift boat allows anglers to reach the greatest number of likely lies --  seam lines, cliff sides, grassy banks, and subsurface structures.  Casting straight downstream with a continued long drift is a great way to trigger explosive strikes from browns waiting in ambush.

Cicada activity begins in late May and continues in earnest through June. The good news is, due to the vast number of cicadas that the trout eat during this period, they continue to key in on large artificials throughout the summer…which brings joy to the hearts (and eyes) of anglers the world over!

Climax Leaders and Tippet
Performance By Design

Every Climax Leader is designed with a stiff butt section to transfer your casting energy progressively down the length of the leader to the tippet section. All TROUT leaders are manufactured with high-abrasion resistance, yet supple co-polymer materials, which allow this energy transfer to deliver a quick, powerful turnover and delicate, natural presentation of the fly. TIPPET MATERIALS compliment Trout leaders.  Climax Leaders are specifically designed for different species of fish and fishing conditions. STEELHEAD and BONEFISH leaders are made of harder more abrasion resistant material.  BARRACUDA/SHARK leaders have wire bite tippets.  The revolutionary STU APTE BIG FISH leaders are in a league of their own for fishing Tarpon and Bluewater Species.  Climax designs give maximum leader performance for specific fishing techniques.  That is why they have been the most popular brand of fly leaders sold at The Fly Fishing Shop for 10 straight years.
