Czech Nymphing Oregon Style (Nymphs On The
Move) |
![]() Light tackle and big trout at close range is the attraction! |
| If you live in Oregon this is a great time of year to fish nymphs. Stone flies are starting to migrate towards the shore in great numbers on the Deschutes. On any given day you could have multiple other hatches going on including caddis and mayflies. One of the best ways to fish these multiple hatches would be with Czech nymphing technique using a long rod and multiple flies. I have been experimenting with this style of fishing for the last year or so and it has produced some very productive fishing trips. If you like the grab of a swung fly you will like this style of nymphing. |
![]() Fishing is done at the rod tip. |
| You are always connected to the fly and feel everything that is going on especially the take. Like every specialized aspect of fishing the tackle is slightly different. Rods are lightweight and longer than normal for better reach, resulting in longer drag-free presentations. These rods are designed with fast actions, but with softer more sensitive tips which results in a more sensitive feel of the bite. |
![]() Redside Trout come in many sizes and colors. |
| Leaders 8' to 9' leaders are set up to use multiple flies, three seems to be the maximum number of flies you can effectively fish with a minimum of tangles. Fishing two-fly set-ups is most popular with many anglers. I have been customizing some of my typical trout nymphs and leaders to fish the Czech style, which is executed by tumbling and dragging your nymphs through moderate depth water. I put the heaviest fly in the middle of the rig and try to keep it very close to the bottom. The other two flies cover additional water. Having three different flies working for you at once increases your odds of having the right one to suite a picky trout. Fishing precisely with a short line has a lot of advantages. If you have more than a couple of feet of line out of the end of the tip of your rod you are losing a lot of the feeling and control that a short line offers. |
![]() Marcy Stone "nymphed" this trout. |
| Toss the flies upstream and hold the fly line out of the water so the rig sinks to the bottom. Instead of mending the line lead the flies through the water you are fishing. The fishing takes place right at the tip of your rod so the longer the rod the more water you will be able to cover. |

Nymph Fishing Gear Trout in public rivers have become extremely conscious of unnatural movements of flies caused by "drag" from poorly executed presentations by anglers who are either inexperienced, inept or badly geared. A real insect drifts with the whims of the currents. An artificial fly drifts differently in the flows unless the anglers fishes very precisely. How the angler is geared makes a huge difference in how easily they can control movements of the fly. Fishing gets easier when the rod, line and reel contribute to a balanced, functional outfit, which is designed for a specific task. The items below were specifically designed to fish heavily weighted flies in faster moving water..."drag-free" |

|
| A unique fly rod series designed for a special style of tournament stream angling in Europe where speed and line control are paramount to success. These are extremely fast, 10-foot, 4-piece rods with light, sensitive tips to help anglers make short, accurate drifts with weighted nymphs. The technique requires very little in the way of traditional casting. Anglers flick weighted flies upstream of the target area and then, using the extra rod length, and long, light leaders, accurately guide the flies along the bottom, under tension. The extra-fast taper in these rods provide a quick hook set, so anglers can react before the fish spits the fly. The 3-weight is for smaller fish and protecting very light tippets. The 4-weight is for slightly heavier tippets and larger fish. The technique is quickly gaining a following in the U.S. as anglers discover new ways to fool pressure-sensitive trout. |

| Rio Indicator Line |
| RIO’s new indicator line has been
designed for the specific application of casting indicator rigs with
ease - whether for trout or steelhead. The thick diameter tip and short
front taper easily turns over the largest of indicators, while the ultra
long head and back taper make it very easy to mend and control the way
the fly fishes at great distance. The line is manufactured with RIO’s
latest high tech coatings: XS Technology for a super slick, dirt
repelling coating, AgentX for an ultra smooth surface and high floating
running line and Super Floatation Technology that creates a high
floating tip. The line also features RIO’s DualTone color concept to
easily show the angler the perfect loading point for each line size. A
welded loop on both ends makes for easy rigging and fast leader changes.
The highly visible tip can be used as an indicator - especially when
Czech nymphing. Each line comes packaged with a free indicator leader. |

| Entry Level Nymph Fishing Outfit |
|
There is an huge advantage in using longer rods for fishing nymphs in moving water. The other day we fished the Deschutes with an outfit I think you would really like. The rod was a Temple Fork Outfitters 10-foot 5-weight from the Professional Series. The Professional (Pro) Series was designed by Lefty Krey specifically for professional fishing guides. Pros are essentially "Client Rods"; that is, they are rods that guides would loan to clients during fishing trips. As such they were designed for the average fly caster. Pro series rods are easy to load and are very durable. We were surprised by the good balance and light weight of this model. For the reel we chose a Ross CLA #3. On the water this rig fished weighted flies accurately with nothing but the leader past the rod tip. It also did as well in the normal 20' to 40' range. With two weighted flies and a split-shot we were also able to fish at ranges beyond 50'. This outfit also is great to use when fishing from a float tube, especially where larger trout occur. This inexpensive outfit has become part of our regular arsonal. |
