About Spey Fishing! Steelheadquarters! Huge Spey Line Selection!
Spey Rod Super Store!
Pictured at right are 17 of the more than 50 models of spey rods that regularly revolve through our inventory.   We carry the best models from: G. Loomis, Loop, CND, Flylogic, Redington, Sage, ScottSt. Croix, Thomas & Thomas and WinstonWhat may be more interesting is, that we have cast nearly every model we stock and have caught steelhead on many of them.  Don't worry, it is a work of love.  This kind of study is the best thing about working in a fly shop.  Everyone likes toys to play with.  Don't you wish that you owned 24 different spey rods and could

...spey rods on the wall...

try any number of different lines on each one....and didn't have to justify your excess to anyone?
The first thing you might realize is that there are a few differing opinions about actions & sizes.  Our collection features models with classic slow actions to the newest cutting edge fast action tapers.  These rods run from 11' to 16' 7" in length; from #5 to #10 weight.  The second thing you come to terms with, is there is no one single model that is the best for every situation.  You can find models that will fish long & short, dry & wet, winter & summer, but to a degree each model is specialized to a certain set of parameters.  Few anglers would choose a 15'-#9-weight for summer fishing on the Deschutes in the summer, over a 13'-#7-weight.  The 15' #9 would win over the lighter rod for tossing big tube flies in the dead of winter.  Slow, soft rods are a joy for playing fish and take little expertise to form serviceable casts, but often bog down in the wind.  Very fast rods build terrific line speed and throw sinking tip and large flies, but take focus and skill to cast well.  Probably in the end, medium size, medium weight, medium action rods fit the widest variety of angling situations and ultimately perform the best for the widest majority of casting styles.
What ever you like in spey rods, we are likely to have it.  And every model we carry or can order will be at Sandy River Spey Clave 2004 for you to see and try!!

Is The Color Right ???
Stonefly Nymph = Trout Yummie, available year round, sizes #4 - #16.
Colors range from black to yellow.  Trout eat all sizes and colors.
But usually only one size and color at a time.  They can be very selective at any time.
It pays to do your research and match colors very closely.
We live in an age of information. Better decisions are made with better information.  Do trout see their food in this detail?  The better you can see, the better flies you can tie. Much of what you can see is determined by your lighting.  Get Giraffe Lighting, because the sun doesn't shine at night.

Patagonia Mesh Master Vest

This cool-wearing, quick-drying, full-capacity
vest is cut short and clean to provide unimpeded mobility for stripping line, rowing a boat or float-tubing.  Its mesh fabric won't absorb moisture that can saturate or freeze.  It is well organized and very lightweight.  the "Mesh Master" doesn't restrict or constrict your movements and is very comfortable to wear.  It may be the ultimate vest for trout fish during hot weather.  The pocket arrangement and pocket size selection enable the angler to carry a variety of common sized boxes and be able to access them easily.  All your tools are readily available,

but not dangling in the way.  There is a well thought out place for each of them.
In short the "Mesh Master" has no annoying features.

Details: Made from form fitting CapileneŽ Silkweight Mesh.  There is a padded collar; rod holder and accessory D-rings; loops for glasses; 19 pockets, including tool pockets and reach-across zippered pockets behind fly box pockets.  The foam fly drier patch retains barbless hooks.

Tarpon Are On The Move In The Middle Keys (A report from Capt. Chris).

Each of the last 5 days have had schools of fish pushing along ocean side hotspots in good numbers. Have had fish eat our flies each day as well. Today I saw my first "daisy chain" of tarpon this year.  There were around 50 fish in this particular school.  When they hit the edge of the flat.  I was poling the boat along it.  They went into a circle about 30 ft across. My anglers had never seen this before and really enjoyed watching the phenomenon.

I had to remind them that we should probably show them the fly. Chip made a great cast on the edge of the school and WHAM we had a take. One around 80-pounds came up and engulfed the green fly.  Two jumps later it was gone....oh well.  Did not land one today but threw the fly to around 250 fish.   We expect the tarpon migration to last through June. Get yourself to the Keys and test your skills with the most challenging sight fishing in the world. Have you thrown a fly to a tarpon latley????  "Tight Loops and Double Hauls to all."  Capt Chris Morrison     www.captchris.com

Dorado & Sailfish Showing At Loreto, Mexico
Large Sailfish: Schools of jumping and tailing fish in the 130-pound class have been spotted.
Dorado Conditions:
The water surface temps are rising rapidly to the 77-79 degree level.  The water is very clear. Some dorado have been reported in the Loreto area already and numbers should increase after the next full moon phase.  Sargasso weed is starting to stack up on the beach and is rafting up in open water.  A good season is predicted.
Please read through the Baja Big Fish Company web site.
It offers an incredible scope of information
that is up-to-dated continually.
Loreto offers spectacular fly fishing
from June through September.
Here is what you can expect in June (copied from Baja Big Fish).
Air temperature- high 75-95(F), lows 71-82(F).  The air is warm and its definitely summer now.   However the high humidity usually won't set in until the end of the month.  June starts the high season for fishing in Loreto, and this is a month that you should definitely consider for a fishing trip.  The seas are glassy calm and the fresh sargasso has had a chance to make its way out to sea and attract and hold the fish that Loreto is famous for, Dorado!  Late summer storms usually will not be a factor in June, so the seas will not take on the swells that can break up the sargasso and submerge it.  So June gives us warm seas, the densest sargasso of the summer and populations of Dorado, Sailfish and Marlin that rival the later summer months of July and August.  I am of the opinion that mid to late June is the primest time to come here for fly fishing, as long as the moon phase is favorable.  There are many big names who would tell you to come a month later, but those folks have never lived here.  When fishing the Loreto area in June expect Dorado, Sailfish, Marlin (all three species), Cabrilla, Pargo, Roosterfish, Jack Crevalle, Giant Needlefish, and many other species.
We still have openings for June.
