How To Be
Successful On Early Season Lakes Some of the best lake fishing for trout can occur right after ice-out. But you need the right tackle and techniques to be successful. Having the right flies and the right fly lines to fish them properly is essential. When the water is near freezing, trout and everything they feed on moves in slow-motion. Most feeding occurs within inches of the lake bottom. Keeping your fly in the strike zone and moving at the right speed are the ingredients for success. In this game, using a fly line with exactly the right sink-rate can make all the difference in how many fish you will land. Since most lakes can vary drastically in depth from one area to another, having a battery of lines with different sink rates will allow you to cover all the water. My own lake set-up incorporates floating, intermediate and sinking lines, as well as flies of different sizes and weights. This allows me to put my flies in the strike zone and keep them there while moving them very slowly. |

| Trout that have been living under ice for a couple of months have forgotten about humans and can be pretty naive. But, these trout can still be fairly selective in what they eat. During the earliest part of the year, only a few of the lakes aquatic organisms are active. Midges, water boatmen, damsel nymphs and leeches are the first lake inhabitants to get moving. An assortment of flies that simulate these critters is necessary for success. Remember, everything is moving in slow motion and your sunk flies should move very slowly also. To accomplish this your boat (pontoon boat, or float tube) must be stationary. This is easy to do on calm days. You simply sit in one place and retrieve your fly slowly. On windy days your boat must be anchored or the wind will move your boat much too quickly, and you won't be able to work your fly slowly enough. Choosing a line with the right sink rate for the depth you are fishing is one of the keys to success. If the line doesn't sink fast enough, your fly will ride too far from the bottom for the trout to even notice it. If your line sinks too quickly, either you will have to retrieve your fly too fast to look natural, or you will be plowing your fly into the bottom and picking up debris on your hook. You rarely get a strike when your hook is fouled. A selection of sinking lines is essential to get your fly to work the bottom at various depths. |

| A lake usually warms in the shallow water around the edges first. A slow sinking line like a Rio CamoLux will fish your fly slowly if the water is from four to six feet deep. Sometimes trout move into water that is less than two feet deep. A floating line or a line with a clear tip is excellent for shallow water. Flies of various weights also help adjust the depth of your presentation. Fly Boxes well stocked with different sizes and weights of Midges is essential for fishing lakes nearly any time of year, but can be even more important early in the season. Midges seem to have a natural antifreeze and can be very active when the water is barely above freezing. Fish feed on these prolific insects at all depths. Midges can hatch nearly any time of year and often produce the first dry fly fishing available on most lakes. Trailing your midge pupa off a deep sunk slow moving wooly bugger |

| can pay big rewards. Strikes can be very light. Your line needs to be free of slack to maximize the "feel" of the bite. For early season fishing, its hard to beat Bachmann's Bead Head Leech as your basic deep-sunk searching fly. Many colors work, but if you aren't getting strikes change to a different color or a different size. A sleeper color for early in the year is olive green. |
![]() |
| Speaking of green, Cal Coal, one of the most renowned lake fishers of recent history, said that the only fly you need for lakes any time of year is "inch-long & green". No doubt this simplistic approach has merits, but we have seen times when 3/4" inch long and green worked even better. One of these periods is early in the year when trout are feeding heavily on immature damsel fly nymphs. The nymphs are normally very light-colored. We list them as Green Damsel Nymphs, but they are more of a light olive-gold. |

| Many Pacific Northwest Lakes offer serenity and very large trout. The desert lakes of Central Oregon and Washington can be incredibly prolific in foods that grow trout quickly to very large sizes. Some privately managed fish-for-fee lakes offer trout that range to over twenty pounds that can be caught from float tubes. Fishing with 2X tippets is not that uncommon. Needless to say these trout aren't always push-overs. You better have the right flies. Our lake fly selection is always evolving. The patterns below are our latest additions. Each was added because of specific insight. | ||
|
Water Boatman, Burke's Water boatmen are reported to occur in fresh water throughout most of the world. In certain local ponds lakes and reservoirs they occur in dense populations. In the edge water of many local rivers with habitats as diverse as the spring fed Deschutes to the glacial fed Sandy River, water boatmen populations can be very prolific. When other aquatic insects are still dormant from the cold of winter, water boatmen can be very |
|
|||
| active. Water boatmen have the hind two pairs of legs fitted with hairs and the outer joints of the hind legs are oar-shaped which allows them to paddle and swim. Adults range in length from 3/16 to 3/8 inch long and are usually dull colored brown or olive. Water boatmen often swim in open water where they are easy prey for trout. Comfortable in cold water, they are often a good choice for an early season trout fly in lakes. Water Boatmen are strong swimmers. Retrieve your fly with quick six inch strips. Water boatmen are often prolific in lake edge-water when the lake levels are high in early spring. The best line for fishing these areas is the Teeny 5' Phantom Tip. | ||||

Snow Cone Chironomid Pupa This is the standard fly for fishing under a strike indicator. The real pupas often suspend in a vertical position. Thingamabobber Strike Indicators are very good for this type of fishing. Make a right-angle junction at your indicator. Be sure that the tippet below the indicator has been straightened. Cast it out and let it sit. Adjust the the depth of the fly until you find fish. Usually if there are fish around, it won't take long. |

| There are many "wormy" looking creatures that live in aquatic environments. Most lakes and weedy streams have dense populations of leeches and aquatic worms. During much of the time they are buried in the substrate or bottom vegetation. However during low light conditions they often forage about where they are exposed to patrolling game fish. Trout and bass seek out these tender morsels and eat them like candy. This is especially true early in the spring before weeds start to grow. Leeches are your most important early season lake flies. If the water temperature is cold, they are most effective when fished slowly along the bottom with a sinking fly line. Swimming leeches are flat and elongated. They swim with an undulating, almost ribbon-like motion. Bachmann's Marabou Leech is designed to mimic this action. It's flat and has a black bead head that gives it a distinct swimming-leech action. Don't head to your lake without some. |
| Bead
Head Leech, Black If you only had one size and color for your earliest season fishing, make it a black size six. This fly catches fish. It is worthwhile having the Black Bead Head Leech in all of the sizes. Sometimes trout display a preference for a certain size. Like everything else, leeches start out small and grow bigger. |

| Midge larvae live in the bottom silts and are unavailable to trout most of the time. During the pupal stage midges rise from the bottom and are often suspended and rise and fall with the light cycles. During this stage they are can become a regular staple in the diet of trout, bass and panfish. It is while midges are suspended in the surface film hatching that they provide the most | |

Bachmann's Damsel
Nymph, Green
This is the early season pattern for many lakes. Fish this fly deep along the bottom. Give it several very short fast strips and then let it set for a long period. Often you will be surprised trout often take the fly while it is not moving and that you only feel them as you start the next stripping sequence. Damsels can vary in color, often being light insect green in early spring. |

| The closer you put your fly to the end of the fish that eats, the more of them will eat it. It's called convenience. If the grocery store is next door you go there more often that if it's twenty miles away. Having the right sink rate of line will enable you to put your fly in the strike zone. Fish in lakes tend to stratify. That means they will often all be at approximately the same depth. Make your cast and let your fly sink a specific length of time. Count the seconds that you let the fly sink before you start your retrieve. When you start hitting fish, remember the count. Chances are you will hit more fish at that same level. | |||||

AquaLux®
Fly Line |
|
| A must-have
line for the serious lake angler. Castability has always been a
problem with clear intermediate sinking lines because there are
no lubricants in the coating and the lines drag through the
guides. RIO has solved the problem by incorporating proprietary
lubricants into the running line coating that make the line
slick. The running line is translucent green while the head is
completely clear. With an intermediate sinking rate of 1.5 – 2.0
inches per second (3.7 cm/s), the line is perfect for fishing
subsurface and shallow shore lines. Ideal when stealth is
required for wary, selective fish. Made on a low memory supple
monofilament core with a coldwater coating and welded loop on

| Adventure At Pronghorn Lake |
![]() |
| Patty & I and Jim & Donna Teeny decided to sample the fishing at Pronghorn Lake by Klamath Falls in Southern Oregon. Jim set it all up a month in advance. As our time grew near, the forecast was calling for stormy weather, which is hardly ever the best for lake fishing. |
![]() |
| It is about a six-hour drive from The Fly Fishing Shop to the lake. We took Jim's Excursion and The Fly Fishing Shop's Lake Adventure Trailer. We got to Pronghorn just before noon, unloaded boats and float tubes from the trailer and moved our sleeping bags into our two separate cabins. Patty found a honey hole late in the afternoon, and several nice trout came to her dragonfly nymph. |

| When we started fishing at mid-day the air was a calm 44-degrees, with the water temperature at 57. There was a sparse midge hatch, but no fish were rising. A couple of trout were caught in no time, then it started to blow. The rest of the afternoon there were squalls that blew pretty hard. That first day I only landed two trout, but one was about six-pounds and the other was over twelve. |

| The next morning Patty and I got a number of medium size trout, while Jim and Donna slept in, but as soon as they started fishing, they wailed on them, using Teeny Leeches. This pair of fine anglers had fished this lake several times before and had the game figured out. |

| We all encountered trout in the edge-water. Jim had given each of us one of his new Phantom Lines with the new 5-foot camo slow sinking tip. They proved to be the perfect weapon for fish that were working in water that was often less than two feet deep. The hot fly proved to be the Antique Gold Leech with the blue head. Makes you wonder, doesn't it? |

| Pronghorn Lake has giant trout. There was a picture on our cabin wall of lake fishing wizard, Denny Rickards with a 24-pound trout he caught from the lake. We had a great time, and will go back. |

| Jim Teeny is a
remarkably productive fisherman. In 1971 Jim started
experimenting with a fly tied exclusively from pheasant tail
fibers. It evolved into the
Teeny Nymph, which has been credited with over 20
world records. Jim has earned a reputation for catching big fish
everywhere he fishes. Lately one of his favorite places is
Rocky Ridge Ranch. We asked Jim to give us
a list of his top three favorite fly patterns for the Rocky
Ridge Ranch lakes. He responded with the Teeny Leech patterns
below. The Teeny Leech is a variation of the original Teeny Nymph. The difference is that the leech has a tail and the nymph does not. The "Leech" has proven to be very productive on several species of game fish, especially big trout in lakes. Jim usually fishes his leech with a Mini-Tip or T-130 line and varies the type of retrieve with the water conditions. |

Egg Sucking Teeny Leech, Black This pattern really catches a lot of different fish. Trout, Steelhead, Salmon, and Bass fall big time for this pattern. These flies tied with the orange head seem to attract hard strikes by most fish. Both lakes and rivers are good waters for the Egg Sucking Leech. We've used floating lines but seem to do better on the Mini-Tip and T-Series sinking lines. When fishing in rivers a dead drift seems to work very well. The takes are usually very strong and aggressive. At times movement of the fly will also trigger savage hits |

Teeny Sparkle Leech, Antique Gold This pattern is tied the same as the regular Teeny Leech except a Crystal Flash butt section added and makes a great attractor pattern. This fly has proven to be Jim's top fly for the Rocky Ridge Ranch lakes and was terrific for big brown trout in Chile last year. |

Teeny Phantom Tip Lines This is a light green line with a 5' clear camo tip. It casts and fishes really well. It will be a staple in my lake arsenal from now on. The best part about this line is that it will fish an unweighted fly between a foot and two feet deep with a slow retrieve where faster sinking lines would be hung up every cast, and where full floating lines wouldn't get the fly deep enough. The last morning at the lake, the 3 out of 4 anglers that fished this line all caught more fish than the one who didn't. |

Teeny Mini Tip Lines |
|

| feet of quick sinking tip. It is easy to cast with great visibility to the angler. Easy to pick up and cast again with great line control during your drift. The Mini Tip line is my personal favorite fly line for most subsurface fishing, except for when you need to get down quickly in heavy currents or deep waters. In rivers, a leader length of 4 to 6 feet is usually the best. If fish are suspended in slow deep pools a 9 to 12 foot leader is best, as it makes a more natural presentation of your fly to the fish without motion or shadow from your line. If you need a line to get your fly down with minimal line drag and excellent control the Mini Tip should be the line for you. | |||||
