Several on-the-water demonstrations drew over 250 viewers...and the sound system worked flawlessly under the constant supervision of John Jones. This year the parking lots overflowed, were expanded and then expanded again. Oxbow Park Group Area "A" is the premier location for this event. The Metro team at Oxbow Park adapted to every challenge, but of course they always have in past Claves. Breakfast, lunch & dinners were served to everyone. That contributed greatly to the human energy in this event. The tackle company rep |

groups did an unprecedented amount of outreach. The kudos are flying for this year's gathering of the spey casting brotherhood. It was one heck of a party and everyone involved should be mighty proud of how it turned out. We want to thank the publications who helped get the word out: Fish & Fly, American Angler, New York Times & Spey Pages. I especially want to thank the general public who attended. Parties are always more fun when someone shows up. Getting the gig going on Friday night has to be a new tradition. The only down side was that steelhead and Chinook populations were very weak. Next year's dates are May 17-18. Maybe the fish will show up. |

Reels
for
Spey Rod Fishing (A
comparison). All of the reels listed below are steelhead proven! |
|
![]() |
Large diameter reels are an advantage when
retrieving large quantities of backing. This is especially true when a fish turns and runs at you. Reels should be selected, not only for price and backing capacity, but also for the right amount of weight to balance with the rod(s) you are going to use the reel with. Large, heavy reels are often an advantage when balancing stout, long rods. Lighter reels might feel better with shorter, lighter rods. Your spey reels can often be used with your 9 to13 weight saltwater rods. |

OFFICIAL!
RIO Tippet material is Number 1! |
|
![]() |
The annual award reinforces the reliability of RIO’s
leader and tippet materials. RIO offers two different IGFA materials: RIOMax®
and RIO’s Hard Saltwater nylon to overcome every likely fishing situation
for the fly fisher. |
|
I n the 12 months between 1st October 2005 and the 30th September 2006 RIO’s tippet material broke 37 World Records, putting RIO as number one. This award betters the runner up award received by RIO in the last three years in the same category. The award was presented to RIO at the IGFA World Record Achievement Award Banquet held on the 28th April, 2007 at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum. RIO’s south eastern representative, Mr. Raz Reid, accepted the award on behalf of RIO. |

"I just
wanted to shoot you guys a report, tarpon are biting. Here is a shot of
Jason Schratwieser who is the conservation director for the IGFA. He fished
with me today and yesterday. We landed this beast along with 2 smaller ones
today and one almost as large yesterday. These fish were caught on your
toad
pattern in Chartreuse." |

They say Oregonians don't tan, they rust. That's alright by us. That wet stuff that comes from the sky is the same thing that steelhead & salmon swim around in. I spent last Wednesday on a local river with the brothers Hamm; Bruce & John, two prominent surgeons. Boy, did it rain. Some cells delivered real "frog stranglers", yet the three of us were warm & dry in our own waterproof breathable environments. On days like this you remember why you paid for that Gortex Wading Jacket and now the price doesn't seem that expensive. |
