Adventure At Ice Out
Patty and I  spent last weekend at Ice Out, Simms annual guide meeting in Bozeman, Montana. It was a lot of fun and very educational. Bozeman, Montana is unique. It displays more quiet dignified American pride than any other town I've been in in the last ten years. It's people are smiley, happy, industrious, and very confident. They are patient when dealing with outsiders, because they deal with a lot of tourists. Centered in the Gallatin Valley at the entrance of Yellow Stone Park, the sport of fly fishing is big business in Bozeman, Montana. There are pictures and statues of trout, drift boats and fishermen everywhere you look in Bozeman. Possibly the Simms logo is even more prevalent. It's evident that Simms loves Bozeman, and Bozeman loves Simms.
Museum Of The Rockies
If you ever get to Bozeman, you've got to take time to see the dinosaur display of Montana fossils. Put together by a team lead by world famous paleontologist Jack Horner, this display reveals how life has changed since these giant beasts went extinct 65-million years ago. Here Tyrannosaurus Rex still lives with Triceratops, and Velociraptor in the Jurassic period. It was a primitive, dangerous era. To our knowledge Gore-Tex had not yet been invented.
Simms New Factory
Think big. America is about big. The lobby in Simms' new factory displays the romance of fly fishing with nearly pharaonic proportions. Patty is dwarfed by the giant mural of a saltwater fly angler, which rises two stories on the wall.
Patty browses through the catalog in the quiet lobby of what may be "fly fishing's" flag ship company. We've toured the manufacturing facility of several leading fly fishing companies. Simms is the most modern.
Angling is portrayed on every wall in a style that might be termed "Modern Megalithic", but that's not the whole story, the Simms factory is designed for "worker comfort" delivered with a very small carbon footprint. This has to be a great place to work.
A wall in the Simms employee lunch room (above). The back wall of the lobby where the factory is in full view to all visitors (below).
We've been Simms dealers and have been using Simms gear since the company has been in business (nearly 30-years). Simms just moved into their new 60,000 square foot factory this winter. It is an ultra modern monument to the American fly fishing industry. Simms is America's wader company, fueled by American pride, ingenuity, craftsmanship, producing the best waders on the planet!
Like many of the several hundred attendees at Ice Out we were permitted to take a factory tour of the whole facility. Since we are one of Simms oldest dealers, we were permitted to video certain parts of the factory as well. Simms owns a lot of proprietary technology and certain parts of the factory were off limits to our cameras.
The Waders made in America are the best in the world. You get what you pay for!
It really got my attention when plant manager Robert Gibson said, " Simms is the last wader manufacturing company left in the United States. All the rest have gone over-seas."
Simms Waders: G3 Guide vs. G4 Pro
G3 Guide Waders G4 Pro Waders
Simms perfected breathable fishing waders with their G3 models. We've worn Simms G3 waders for about 10-years (approx). In that period of time this model had gone through at least four up-grades, with each new model getting more reliable. They feature pliable three layer construction in the critical leg areas that take the most punishment from abrasion. They are comfortable and perfect for the average angler that fishes from five to twenty days a year. A couple of years ago Simms realized that they needed to develop waders that were even more durable for professional fishing guides that fish from 100 to 200 days per year, a challenging task. Simms combined with the W.L. Gore Company to produce an even more durable 5-layer fabric that can take the abuse of working in a harsh outdoor environment. After serious field testing by professional fishing guides in the field, the G4 Pro Series emerged as the most durable waders in the world. Because of greater cost in materials and construction, G4's are more expensive than G3's. They are stiffer in the legs because of the extra material thickness. Me and several members of our crew have worn both G3 and G4 models. At first the G4's didn't feel as comfortable as the G3's, but after they got broke in, there wasn't a noticeable difference. G4's cost $250 more per pair than G3's, but the fact is that nearly every professional fishing guide wears them should tell you something, they are just that much better. If you fish less than 20-days per year G3's will get the job done for sure, but if you are a really serious angler, you're going love the new G4 Pro Waders from Simms.

Mark Bachmann fly fishing for bass using Simms G3 waders.  "I now have more than a full season on my latest pair Simms G3 Chest High Waders without a leak or malfunction of any kind. There have been many hard working days, wading deep in frigid water, or hiking through willow bars complete with beaver-stobs. Days have also been spent walking the banks of my favorite desert river where every bit of streamside vegetation has thorns and stickers. Gee-threes are the best fitting and most comfortable waders I've ever owned, and that includes the more expensive models from the same company",
Mark Bachmann

According to the guides in the field, the G3s regularly exceed expectations for comfort and durability.

Summer Steelhead or Winter Steelhead ???

Sexually immature summer steelhead caught 3/26/13.
As anglers and/or biologists, we classify steelhead into two races, Summer Steelhead and Winter Steelhead. Both races are in many local rivers in nearly equal numbers throughout the month of April. In larger rivers west of the Cascade Mountains, specimens of both races can be equally fresh from the Ocean and be equally bright.  They may be equally aggressive to the fly and be equally strong. This time of year winter steelhead and summer steelhead can be a little difficult to tell apart. So lets examine what perceived differences led to the separate classifications. We might also examine if in fact the separate classification of summer and winter steelhead is even an entirely valid approach.  There are bright, new steelhead in many of the larger lower Columbia River tributaries every month of the year.  Summer Steelhead are sexually immature when they leave the Ocean.
Summer steelhead vent & anal fin, April 15.
When fresh from the ocean, summer steelhead are sexually immature. The anus is a narrow slit. No ovipositor is visible.
Winter steelhead vent & anal fin April 16.
Winter steelhead are sexually mature fish soon after leaving the salt. The anus will be dilated with an ovipositor that is protruding.
In the Columbia basin, both wild and hatchery summer steelhead can leave the Ocean as early as February, or as late as October.  Their gonads are very small and the abdominal cavity is full of layered fat. They rarely spawn until the following winter, usually from late December through early February.  Winter Steelhead are classified as fish that will spawn within a week or two after entering fresh water.  Many leave the Ocean with vents that are already dilated, ready to spawn.  These fish are full of  eggs or sperm.
They have much less body fat than summer steelhead when they leave the salt. Winter Steelhead can be found spawning in some local rivers as early as November and as late as July.  In the 1950's, some steelhead were tagged in the Columbia River in November.  Several of these fish crossed Marmot Dam on the Sandy River in April, nearly 6 months later.  They reached sexual maturity during their long stay in the river, much like summer steelhead.  Yet they were in the river during the winter.

Sexually mature winter steelhead caught 4/11/13.
The two fish pictured above were caught a couple of weeks apart.  They probably left the Ocean at about the same time.  The lower fish is a sexually mature winter steelhead, which will probably spawn in a very few days.  The sexually immature summer steelhead (at the top of this article) probably won't spawn until January or February of the following year.

This sexually mature wild steelhead was caught 10/31/1988.
There is also a group of wild steelhead that enter the Sandy River September and October and some individuals spawn in early November.  Are they summer or winter steelhead?  Wild steelhead are often more diverse than what was commonly thought, and some don't fit the summer steelhead/winter steelhead classification. According to most biologists fall spawning rainbows don't exist, but the steelhead pictured here is just that(?) Wisely, no wild steelhead are allowed to be killed from our local rivers.

    Fish long & prosper,
    Mark, Patty & Crew
