It is academic! You learned it when you were a kid. It may have been your very first fishing lesson. During spring run-off, when the river is high and dirty nothing beats worms when you are fishing for trout. Just because you have become a fly fisher the game hasn't changed. When a river is excavating the banks there is a catastrophic drift of worms and the trout take advantage.

Worms occur in dense populations in many silty stream and lake beds. Worms also occur in the bottoms of fast moving gravel bed rivers. During times of floods, catastrophic drift can expose many worms to waiting trout. During these high water periods a San Juan Worm drifted along the bottom can be deadly. On local rivers "the worm" is a very productive fly during winter months or any time the river rises due to flash floods. Aquatic worms come in a variety of colors ranging from tan to red. Often a fake worm fly that is brighter colored than real ones

will produce strikes, especially when the water is turbid. Be sure to have several colors of worms in your fly box. The Fly Fishing Shop in Welches has over 10,000-dozen flies in stock.

		San Juan Worm, Red Some aquatic worms are reddish. We have never seen any worms as bright as these flies, but don't let that fool you. There have been lots of trout caught on this pattern.

		Deschutes Worm, Pink We spent a lot of time screening the Deschutes River, looking at the aquatic invertebrates that live there. The majority of worm that live in the substrate are pinkish. the first time we fished this pattern during spring run-off the trout gave it two thumbs up. (Well they would have if they had thumbs.)

The Scandinavian style of two-hand casting was developed in the 1960's. Anglers schooled on the famous salmon and seatrout rivers of Norway and Sweden developed a casting style using shooting taper fly lines. These lines incorporated floating or intermediate shooting heads of 30-45 feet, with mono shooting/running lines. Instead of holding a fixed length of line as in traditional casting developed in the British Isles, anglers learned to shoot the entire line in one stroke. This technique uses a much shorter, faster stroke with more emphasis on the lower hand during the cast, sometimes referred to as the "underhand" style. The G.Loomis Stinger Series was originally designed as 3-piece rods, but this year were redesigned in 4-piece models for improved transportability. They were also given a new name… STINGER GLX. The rod actions remain fast and powerful to help casters create narrow, aerodynamic loops using this underhand dominated casting stroke. Their fast tapers allow you to make overhead casts as long as there is sufficient room for a back cast, these casts generate incredible line speed for unbelievable distance - something you might consider for casting from the beach for saltwater species. Because the physical weight of the line reflects the true rating for each rod, G.Loomis converted the traditional line-size system to grains and grams for a more universal rating convention. Stinger GLX rods feature Recoil guides, the best species-cork available and the exclusive G.Loomis "yin yang" machined reel seat with ivory-style insert and scrimshaw spey fly graphic. The handle shape has been refined, using a slim diameter, extended full-wells profile with a small composite cork butt-cap, giving it a nice finished look as well as providing durability. Each rod comes with a soft, protective rod sock and screw-top travel case.

A surprisingly powerful 12'6" two-hand rod that handles smaller flies on lighter lines. Under the traditional line rating system this would be a 7/8, but since most of the heads anglers use for the Scandinavian style, are based on the physical line weight, we refer to them in grams for Europe and grains for North America. This rod is designed to fish smaller rivers where distance isn't the primary objective, but don't let that fool you. This rod will handle big fish and big water just fine. Searun browns, steelhead and smaller salmon in the 8-20-pound range are where this rod really shines.
