Fishing are
the definitive references for those facets of our sport. Trey's
fine prose makes reading highly technical information easy and
enjoyable. When you finish one of his books you know he did his
research. He has been where giant fish tear tackle apart and
wear anglers out. Every one of his books is an adventure lived
vicariously by the reader through the magic of Trey's pen. Trey
has used Thomas & Thomas fly rods on steelhead & salmon rivers
all over North America and Europe. He has used T&T fly rods
while battling blue water game fish off shores of three continents.
This experience gives him a unique perspective on fly fishing and fly
fishing gear; especially fly rods. You can bet this huge
reservoir of experience is fed into the Thomas & Thomas design
mix. He is easily approachable in person and being around Trey
is a unique experience. He has so much information to share and
he shares it so easily. Trey is a brilliant photographer/show
narrator and will put on one of his very entertaining and
informative slide shows. Don't miss it. |
| The
Fleet We offer fly fishing trips with both float boats and a motorized boat. These trips are on the Sandy, Clackamas and Deschutes Rivers. I fish all three rivers over a wide variety of conditions. Each section of each river has its own personality. Each may be fished with a variety of water craft, but each fishes best with a particular boat during a certain water level. That is why we have such a diversified fleet, to cover all of the bases. My guide boats are as follows: |

In On The Giant Stone Fly Nymph Migration Nymphs of the giant stone flies called "Salmon Flies" live in our rivers for up to three years before they hatch into winged adults. They are available to trout in several sizes, nearly year round. Behavioral drift |
| cycles happen during the low light conditions of early morning and late evening daily nearly year round. These drifts occur to redistribute population densities. The largest behavioral drift cycles occur mid-September through May. During these drifts many nymphs are exposed to feeding | ![]() |

trout. You should carry patterns in several different weights to cover different water depths and speeds. You will also find it productive to carry several different styles, colors and sizes of flies. Even though there might be three generations of stone fly nymphs in the river at the same time, one size of nymph might be more active than the others at any given |
| moment. Several weeks before the hatch, nymphs of both salmon flies and golden stones will start to migrate to staging areas along the banks. No other occurrence in our rivers produces a feeding frenzy like a migration of big stone fly nymphs. Even the largest trout find it hard to | ![]() |

refuse a big stone fly nymph fished deep along the bottom. The peak of this activity is the last two weeks before the hatch starts and the first week after the hatch begins. Remember that as these nymphs reach maturity, they |
| lighten
up in color. This is because the outer layer of each nymph, or
exoskeleton is stretched and thinned. The colors of the
adult insect start to show through. Just before the hatch Salmon
Fly Nymphs turn from nearly black to brown or orangish-brown and
Golden Stone Nymphs turn from muddy-brown to yellow-brown. Click here for a complete selection of Stone Fly Nymphs |

Steelhead Fly Fishing: Is A Learning Experience |
|
![]() |
It can be called, "Steelhead Fly Fishing" or "Fly Fishing For Steelhead". This sport leads to a deeper understanding of the natural world that we and steelhead live in. Steelhead are magical creatures; unique among fishes. They have much to teach us. For that reason alone, fly fishing for steelhead is worth the pursuit. You know they are beautiful. You've seen all of those fresh steelhead pictures on our web site. There are pictures from all times of the year and from many different rivers. All those beautiful |
| steelhead were caught with flies. You know that. And now you want to catch some steelhead with flies yourself. But, you've heard from other anglers that catching steelhead with flies is very difficult. You've heard right. A very small percentage of the fly-angling public catches steelhead with flies. Yet, some of those anglers catch lots of steelhead per season. They do it with the right tackle and the right acquired skills. Our steelhead schools are designed to give you those skills in the quickest, most efficient, most fun, most cost effective manner possible. It's easy: First learn to cast. Then learn to present the fly. Then learn to hunt. Then learn to land steelhead. | |
| Our
Steelhead Guides & Instructors An instructor is the person who teaches a school to prepare you for a certain task. A guide is a person who takes you to a certain place. Our guides are also instructors. However, any guided fly fishing trip will be more productive if you have already acquired the skills to deliver the fly to the fish. Attending a series of steelhead fly fishing schools before going on a guided trip can pay real dividends. |

| LEARNING
TO CAST Learning to cast well is the most essential part of learning to catch steelhead. We use both shingle-hand and two-hand fly rods. The two-hand fly rod, also spey rod, has recently become the most popular instrument for presenting flies to steelhead and salmon. This is especially true when larger rivers are being fished. Spey rods allow any angler to cover more water, more efficiently. A spey rod enables an angler to present his or her flies at longer ranges, even where there is little room for a back-cast . This is because the back cast is not aerolized. Rather a change-of-direction roll cast is performed. This is called a spey cast. There are many types of spey casts. Some are hundreds of years old. Others have recently evolved. You can learn all of them from us. We offer the best instruction in a comprehensive, yet affordable package. SPEY CASTING CLASSES This class is taught by Ron Lauzon and Leroy Teeple, who are both Oregon Licensed Guides and FFF Certified Fly Casting Instructors. Ron and Leroy have a combined total 20 years of fly casting experience. Both men are students of the art of fly casting and the art of teaching fly casting in the most understandable and efficient manner. Here is a spey casting school that comes in manageable classes. You can take any or all of the classes. We suggest that you take them all. All classes are a minimum of 4 and maximum
of 6 students. This gives an instructors to student of 2-3 per
instructor. You will receive nearly constant hands-on help. |
| INTRODUCTORY

Summer
Steelhead fly fishing is very practical if you know how. Being
able to find fish and being able to present the fly properly are key
factors. We will show you how. This is a school that will cover a lot of water and fishing knowledge in one day. Length of the class is 8-hours on the water. Three student per instructor format. Emphasis will be on giving you a solid foundation of skills to build on, with a high priority given to hooking fish during the class. |
| We
want to give you maximum advantage by having as many fish hooked
during this class as possible. Nothing teaches you more
about fishing than being where fish are being hooked and landed. Emphasis will be on spey rod casting and sinking-tip line fishing, but will also cover single handed rod techniques. Learn how to locate steelhead water and how to approach it. |
