are the definitive
references for those facets of our sport. Trey's fine prose makes
reading highly technical information easy and enjoyable. When you
finish one of his books you know he did his research. He has been
where giant fish tear tackle apart and wear anglers out. Every one
of his books is an adventure lived vicariously by the reader through the
magic of Trey's pen. Trey has used Thomas & Thomas fly rods on steelhead & salmon
rivers all over North America and Europe. He has used T&T fly rods while
battling blue water game fish off shores of three continents. This
experience gives him a unique perspective on fly fishing and fly fishing
gear; especially fly rods. You can bet this huge reservoir of
experience is fed into the Thomas & Thomas design mix. He is easily approachable in
person and being
around Trey is a unique experience. He has so much information to
share and he shares it so easily. Trey is a brilliant
photographer/show narrator and we will try to persuade him to put on
one of his slide shows. Don't miss it. |

| Tackle For Giant Tarpon | |
![]() |
When you play the big tarpon game, you need a rod/reel/line combination that will deliver pin-point accuracy at ranges from 40'-65'. Your rod has to load easy under windy conditions and deliver large flies and bulky leaders with precise control. Your reel must deliver silky smooth drag pressure under a steady load of 6 pounds pull and peak pressures of over 12 pounds. This is no place for anything delicate or temperamental. Any distraction caused by your tackle can lead |
|
to immediate defeat. You want an outfit made from proven components. The directory below will take you to the proven rods, reels and lines. |
||
| Rods | Sage 1190-4Xi2, 1290-4Xi2 | Very durable and powerful with smooth performance. Works best for tarpon fishing if over loaded one line size. |
| Winston 1290-4 B2X | A sensational rod that handles many kinds of fly lines. Very lightweight, yet incredibly durable. Seems to be a true 12-weight at tarpon ranges. | |
| Reels | Abel Super 12 | Abels have less moving parts than other reels. All of the parts are made precisely. No expense is spared. Totally reliable if well maintained. Smooth under pressure. |
| Tibor Gulfstream | Tibor Reels are made in Florida and are tested regularly on giant tarpon. The current World Record 202 lb. tarpon was landed with a Gulfstream. | |
| Lines | Mastery Tarpon Lines | This maker has a lot of experience. |

Salmon Fry Emergence Unseen Super Hatch? |
|
|
|
Remember those record runs of salmon that we had here in Oregon last fall ? Remember all of those extra salmon that spawned in our rivers. All winter those millions of salmon eggs have been incubating in the gravel during one kindest winters in recent record. Water flows have been very stable this winter. There have been no catastrophic floods and no deep freezes. |
| Egg
survival in the gravel has to be at an all time high. Now the
river bed is about ready to bloom. This spring should see one of
the most prolific salmon fry emergences in memory. Trout eat
baby salmon where both species are abundant. Salmon Alevin
and Fry fly patterns could be very productive this spring for catching
trout and whitefish. Many anglers are aware that when salmon, steelhead and trout spawn that the resulting egg drift can make trout and whitefish feed ravenously on eggs. Egg patterns drifted close to the bottom can produce many hook-ups. Anglers in Alaska and British Columbia have know for years that fry emergence can trigger a bite. |

To Salmon Life Cycle Information |
If your local favorite trout stream gets a salmon run then it too could have a fry emergence period. When this emergence will occur depends on the specie of salmon involved and the temperature of the stream. In the Pacific Northwest most salmon fry emerge in April and May. |
![]() |
King
Alevin When baby salmon hatch from the egg, they do so with the egg yoke attached. Some are washed from the gravel by catastrophic events or are crowded out by siblings or leave the gravel during investigative forays. As soon as they are exposed they become easy prey. Fish this fly dead drift close to the gravel as if it were a nymph. |

Alaskan
Fry It is well known that fry emergence can really get big Rainbows chompin'. This is also true of Char, Whitefish and many other predator species. This fly can be fished with a sinking tip line as a live fry or as a dead or injured fry by drifting it along the bottom with a floating line, long leader and lead shot. |
