Fly Fishing Fun!
The sport of fly fishing for trout as it was inherited from early European migrants, forms the basis of all fly fishing sports in North America. Though tackle technology is constantly evolving and all parts of the world have contributed to sport of fly fishing, it is the literature of the British Isles that set the present game in motion. The concept of "matching the hatch" turned the sport into a scientific study of our natural world, and deeper understanding of our influences upon it. Most noted river stewards are also fly fishers. In the literature where fly fishing is first introduced to the English speaking peoples (1496), the writer, a nun compares fly fishing as a way to keep company with angels. Fly fishing for trout is a sport that is stress relieving, yet educationally stimulating, healthy and moderately inexpensive. The school listed below offers a traditional, yet up to date approach to fly fishing for trout starting at the most basic level, and finally taking you to collage where you will learn from the masters. These schools are fun and extremely educational. We use the Deschutes River as our main class room. Fly fishing for trout on the Deschutes River is a wondrous adventure to be remembered, and cherished for a lifetime.
Your instructors are: Mark Bachmann, Josh Linn, Travis Johnson & Marcy Stone.

This school is designed to give you a basic understanding of fly fishing for smaller species of fish, such as trout and pan fish. This School is designed to take you from Zero to Trout Fishing in one day. It starts in an indoor class room with subjects that will enable you to choose your own tackle in an educated manner, then rig it for successful fly fishing adventures.
This program discloses how the rod, reel, line and leader act as a complimentary unit to propel your fly to the selected target. You will learn how to assemble your own gear so that it is balanced and functional. Then you will move out of doors, where you will learn how to cast, so that you can be a successful angler. This class is designed so that you will get a lot of "hands-on" support with a ratio of 2-3 students per instructor.
The Entry Level Fly Casting Lessons are designed to fit perfectly with our Entry Level Trout Fishing Lessons, so that all lessons can be accomplished during the same day.  Accomplishing the whole school during the same day will enable each student comprehend "how" and "why" things work the way they do, so that they will more easily be remembered. This continually reinforces the new skills as they are being acquired.
There will be a leisurely car ride between the two parts of the school. Lunch will be served during your ride. During lunch, you will enjoy the ever-changing scenery as you cross the Cascade Mountains from the rain-forest to the desert. In a little over and hour you will arrive at the Deschutes River. Here you will ride down the river in a drift boat. Your Instructor/Guide will stop the boat periodically, and you will continue your trout fishing education. These casting and fishing schools taken in this sequence are the perfect preparation for even more advanced schools and guided fishing trips. School bookings are online only. Space is limited.
Learning How To Cast Properly
The casting program discloses how the rod, reel, line and leader act as a complimentary unit to propel your fly to the selected target. You will learn how to assemble your own gear so that it is balanced and functional. Then you will learn quickly how to cast, by using modern, proven methods.
Noon - Dark: Moving To The Water And Fishing
Ratio: One Instructor/Guide per 2-3 students

A wise man once said, "You can more easily figure out "how" if you can figure out "why". During the Entry Level Trout Fishing School we will unlock the secrets of not only how to catch trout with flies, but also why the methods work the way they do.
In order to catch a trout with a fly, several things have to happen in a certain sequential order. First you have to locate a fish. Then you have to approach the fish in a stealthy manner. Then you have to present your fly in a manner that will convince the fish to eat it. After the fish eats the fly you have to figure out how to land it. It helps if before you throw the winning cast that you have figured out what the fish is likely to eat, and mapped out a plan of action for landing the fish, before the fish is actually hooked.
Your Instructor/Guide is an expert trout hunter. He/she will explain where trout live and why they live there. Then you will collect examples of what trout foods are active during your time on the water. Your Instructor/Guide will demonstrate how to get into position to make the perfect presentations that will enable you to catch trout with both floating and sunk flies. All the while you are attending class, you will be learning the art of observation, so you can enjoy the process of fly fishing even more. If you are attentive and diligent during this class you will catch fish.
Class bookings are online only. Space is limited.

Echo Ion Reels
Ion 4/5 Ion 5/6
The Echo Ion Reels are the best fly fishing reels we have seen in the less than $100 category. They are a hybrid design, in that they are injection molded cast aluminum, then they are machined to very exacting tolerances. This operation gives many of the benefits associated with reels that are machined from bar-stock, but with a huge reduction in manufacturing costs. This results in massive savings to the consumer (you).  These reels contain ball bearings
and a cork disc drag system, all of which are encapsulated in a grime-proof carrier. The drag is smooth and fully adjustable. The reels are pained matte black. Internal parts are stainless steel. These reels are strong enough for light saltwater use, but they are not anodized with anti corrosion coating. Extra care would be required in cleaning and lubricating all surfaces that come in contact with saltwater. Therefore we recommend these reels for freshwater use only. There are four sizes, two trout reels and two steelhead/Spey reels. The two trout size, 4/5 &5/6 reels are used for entry level trout outfits. Ions will be popular for beginning anglers, and guides who provide tackle and experienced anglers who need back-up/loaner tackle. There is great probability you will not be able to find a better deal on a reel unless you steal it.

Hardy Marquis Salmon/Steelhead Reels
River & Fish       Garry Sandstrom Says

The following video is mostly river & fishing, sights & sounds. Can it get better than a pretty girl and a bright wild steelhead landed with the most traditional fly fishing methods?

Introduced in the mid-1970's as the Scientific Anglers System Reel, the Marquis was the first  "rim-control" fly reel to become popular in the USA. This popularity was overwhelming. Now nearly all fly fishing reels sold in the world have some sort of exposed spool rim for extra control when playing fish. For some reason Hardy and Scientific Anglers couldn't get along in the reel business, and Scientific Anglers dropped the Hardy product.
Hardy slightly redesigned the guts of the reel and reintroduce it into the U.S. market as the Marquis Series. It came in light-trout through salmon sizes and like all Hardy reels of the period, they were machined from aluminum castings. These reels were very popular, but the world of international finance and the difference in exchange between the dollar and the pound sterling made the importation of these reels into the United States nearly impossible.
Finally U.S. reel manufacturers started producing reels on computer driven machines using bar-stock aircraft aluminum, which was stronger than any comparable aluminum casting. For a while it appeared that the venerable Marquis was doomed to the realm of antiques. Then Hardy changed its whole operation. They moved their production from Great Briton to the Orient where high speed machining and a lack of craft guilds made manufacturing more streamlined, more precise and less expensive.
Hardy Company Rep, Garry Sandstrom demonstrates how the
Hardy Marquis Reels have improved over the last forty years.
Now the Marquis series is machined from aircraft aluminum alloy bar-stock. Only the larger salmon sizes have survived. They have found extreme favor with Pacific Northwest steelhead anglers.
These new Marquis salmon reels are in three sizes: salmon one, two and three. They are built to the original design, but are much stronger than the original cast models.
Hardy made the new reels and spools interchangeable with all the originals. The new reels are all manufactured with the polished silver rim style that everyone agrees is the Marquis at its best. The  the internal cam has been slightly redesigned to give an increased in range to the click-check friction. The most endearing quality of the Marquis series is the distinctive sound which is producds when a fish is taking line. This is the same sound that has been produced by Hardy Reels for over a hundred years. It is a jolly sound that when heard, tells every angler that life is very good.
  • Frame and spools fully interchangeable with the originals
  • All-aluminum frame for strength
  • Polished silver rim for classic look
  • In three sizes to cover every salmon fishing situation
