Jim
Teeny Program "Still Water Trophy Trout" Jim Teeny has been one of the great innovators of fly fishing technique and tackle for the last 30 years. His Teeny Nymphs tied from pheasant tail fibers have accounted for numerous world records. His "T" Series fast sinking tip fly lines revolutionized salmon and steelhead fishing. A veteran fisher and holder of numerous world fly fishing records, Jim lives in Gresham, Oregon. |
| He is also a very talented photographer and eloquent speaker. We are fortunate to have him as our guest where he will give a slide presentation on how to catch trophy trout from lakes with flies. Show time is: Sunday April 14, 2002, 1:00 to 5:00pm at The Fly Fishing Shop. Get there early as space is limited. | |

Salmon Fry Emergence Unseen Super Hatch? |
|
|
|
Remember those record runs of salmon that we had here in Oregon last fall ? Remember all of those extra salmon that spawned in our rivers. All winter those millions of salmon eggs have been incubating in the gravel during one kindest winters in recent record. Water flows have been very stable this winter. There have been no catastrophic floods and no deep freezes. |
|
Egg survival in the gravel has to be at an all time high.
Now the river bed is about ready to bloom.
This spring should see one of the most prolific salmon fry emergences in
memory. Trout eat baby salmon where both species are abundant. Salmon
Alevin and Fry fly patterns could be very productive this spring for
catching trout and whitefish. Many anglers are aware that when salmon, steelhead and trout spawn that the resulting egg drift can make trout and whitefish feed ravenously on eggs. Egg patterns drifted close to the bottom can produce many hook-ups. Anglers in Alaska and British Columbia have know for years that fry emergence can trigger a bite. |

Links To Salmon Life Cycle Information |
If your local favorite trout stream gets a salmon run then it too could have a fry emergence period. When this emergence will occur depends on the specie of salmon involved and the temperature of the stream. In the Pacific Northwest most salmon fry emerge in April and May. |

King Alevin When baby salmon hatch from the egg, they do so with the egg yoke attached. Some are washed from the gravel by catastrophic events or are crowded out by siblings or leave the gravel during investigative forays. As soon as they are exposed they become easy prey. Fish this fly dead drift close to the gravel as if it were a nymph. |

Alaskan Fry It is well known that fry emergence can really get big Rainbows chompin'. This is also true of Char, Whitefish and many other predator species. This fly can be fished with a sinking tip line as a live fry or as a dead or injured fry by drifting it along the bottom with a floating line, long leader and lead shot. |

Building Your Own Tapered Leaders Most fly casters would agree that being able to throw narrow loops is an advantage when generating fly line speed for long accurate casts. In many cases having a leader at the end of the line that allows the tight loop energy to flow from the line to the fly and places the leader perfectly straight on the water is also an advantage, but not always. High velocity leaders are an advantage when casting flies that will be retrieved or fished under tension. However, a leader that dissipates energy and falls with slack may be more appropriate for dry fly fishing drag free. Such a leader may land on the water with gentle "S" curves that buffer drag. How a leader casts and lands can be dictated by design. How a leader turns over and straightens in the air is determined by casting presentation, leader taper and leader material. The last two factors are constructed into the leader its self. A leader that is made from stiff material will transmit more energy than a leader made from soft pliable material. Large diameter material will hold more energy than small diameter material. Generally speaking leaders that are made for delivering a fly with authority are 60% butt, 20% mid-section and 20% tippet. They can be made entirely from a stiff material such as Maxima Chameleon (Example #1). Leaders that are designed for softer presentations or to combat drag have shorter butts and have longer mid-sections and tippets. The butt and part of the mid-section is made from Maxima Chameleon, but part of the mid-section and the tippet are made from a softer material such as Umpqua tippet material (Example #2). For even softer presentations the butt of the leader is shortened and the tippet and mid-sections are lengthened (Example #3). |
