Leeches are a good bet for trout in early season lakes

Some of the best trout fishing of the year can occur right after ice-out on local lakes. The water is still very cold, but temperatures are rising just enough to turn on trout metabolism. Trout that have been living under ice for a couple of months have forgotten about humans and can be very naiive. These trout are often hard bodied chromers that pull hard. Most fish will be very close to the bottom. Since the water is very cold, trout and the various organisms they feed on are living in slow motion. Often the trick is to move your fly very slowly across the bottom. To accomplish this your boat (pontoon boat, or float tube) must be stationary. This is easy to do on calm days. You simply sit in one place and retrieve your fly slowly. On windy days your boat must be anchored or the wind will move your boat much too quickly, and you won't be able to work your fly slowly enough. A selection of sinking lines is very helpful to get your fly to work the bottom at various depths. A lake usually warms the shallow water around the edges of a lake first. A slow sinking line like a Mastery Stillwater line will fish your fly slowly if the water is from four to six feet deep. Flies of various weights also help adjust the depth of your presentation.

Zug Bug The Zug Bug nymph pattern was invented by Cliff Zug as a caddis fly imitation. While it is effective as an emerging or diving sedge pattern, it also works well to imitate dragon fly nymphs, mayfly nymphs and water boatmen. With the wing and hackle trimmed off it can also represent midge pupae. This can be a deadly lake fly.

When lake fishing, a lot of your success depends on the sink rate of your fly line. The fly line has everything to do with keeping your fly in the strike zone. If the line doesn't sink fast enough your fly may be too far above the fish to get their attention. If your line sinks too fast then your fly is hung up on the bottom or is collecting weeds.

AquaLux® Fly Line

A must-have line for the serious lake angler. Castability has always been a problem with clear intermediate sinking lines because there are no lubricants in the coating and the lines drag through the guides. RIO has solved the problem by incorporating proprietary lubricants into the running line coating that make the line slick. The running line is translucent green while the head is completely clear. With an intermediate sinking rate of 1.5 – 2.0 inches per second (3.7 cm/s), the line is perfect for fishing subsurface and shallow shore lines. Ideal when stealth is required for wary, selective fish. Made on a low memory supple monofilament core with a coldwater coating and welded loop on the front end. Our recent tests have disclosed that this line will fish to four feet deep pretty quickly, but will enable you to fish shallow water easily when fish are patrolling the edges of a lake. This often happens early in the season, just after ice-out as the shallow water along the edges of a lake often warms first. The Rio AquaLux® Fly Line has less memory when cold than do most other sinking fly lines, which makes it easier to cast then the weather/water are cold during the early season.

Scientific Anglers Mastery Stillwater Fly Lines
	Crystal-clear and slow sinking, this line is virtually invisible to fish and ideal for fishing lakes. These lines are built with a special taper and unusually small diameter for superior casting performance. The coating is unusually slick when wet (nicknamed the slime line) and shoots through the rod guides with a minimum of friction. Many Oregon Lakes provide great fly fishing opportunities, especially for anglers equipped with float tubes or pontoon boats. During warmer months action can continue throughout the day but is usually best early and late when water temperatures are in the comfort zone. During early spring or late fall action can be best during the middle of the day when the water is warmest.

These public lakes are located in central Oregon and can provide very good early and late season fly fishing. They are usually ice free from first of April until mid-November. During cool summers they can fish through the hottest months. Call for the latest details.
