How To Be Successful On Early Season Lakes
Some of the best lake fishing for trout can occur right after ice-out. But you need the right tackle and techniques to be successful. Having the right flies and the right fly lines to fish them properly is essential. When the water is near freezing, trout and everything they feed on moves in slow-motion. Most feeding occurs within inches of the lake bottom. Keeping your fly in the strike zone and moving at the right speed are the ingredients for success. In this game, using a fly line with exactly the right sink-rate can make all the difference in how many fish you will land. Since most lakes can vary drastically in depth from one area to another, having a battery of lines with different sink rates will allow you to cover all the water. My own lake set-up incorporates floating, intermediate and sinking lines, as well as flies of different sizes and weights. This allows me to put my flies in the strike zone and keep them there while moving them very slowly.
Hooked to a big one!
Trout that have been living under ice for a couple of months have forgotten about humans and can be pretty naive. But, these trout can still be fairly selective in what they eat. During the earlies part of the year, only a few of the lakes aquatic organisms are active. Midges, water boatmen, damsel nymphs and leeches are the first lake inhabitants to get moving. An assortment of flies that simulate these critters is necessary for success. Remember, everything is moving in slow motion and your sunk flies should move very slowly also. To accomplish this your boat (pontoon boat, or float tube) must be stationary. This is easy to do on calm days. You simply sit in one place and retrieve your fly slowly. On windy days your boat must be anchored or the wind will move your boat much too quickly, and you won't be able to work your fly slowly enough. Choosing a line with the right sink rate for the depth you are fishing is one of the keys to success. If the line doesn't sink fast enough, you fly will ride too far from the bottom for the trout to even notice it. If your line sinks too quickly, either you will have to retrieve your fly to fast to look natural or you will be plowing your fly into the bottom and picking up debris on your hook. You rarely get strike when your hook is fouled. A selection of sinking lines is essential to get your fly to work the bottom at various depths.
Being over prepared is not a sin.
A lake usually warms in the shallow water around the edges first. A slow sinking line like a Rio CamoLux will fish your fly slowly if the water is from four to six feet deep. Sometimes trout move into water that is less than two feet deep. A floating line or a line with a clear tip is excellent for shallow water. Flies of various weights also help adjust the depth of your presentation. Fly Boxes well stocked with different sizes and weights of Midges is essential for fishing lakes nearly any time of year, but can be even more important early in the season. Midges seem to have a natural antifreeze and can be very active when the water is barely above freezing. Fish feed on these prolific insects at all depths.  Midges can hatch nearly any time of year and often produce the first dry fly fishing available on most lakes. Trailing your midge pupa off a deep sunk slow moving wooly bugger
A Bachmann's Leech is often the answer.
can pay big rewards. Strikes can be very light.  Your line needs to be free of slack to maximize the "feel" of the bite.  For early season fishing, its hard to beat Bachmann's Bead Head Leech as your basic deep-sunk searching fly. Many colors work, but if you aren't getting strikes change to a different color or a different size. A sleeper color for early in the year is olive green.
A big rainbow trout patrols the bottom looking for damsel nymphs at Rocky Ridge Ranch, Wild Rose Lake.
Speaking of green, Cal Coal, one of the most renowned lake fishers of recent history, said that the only fly you need for lakes any time of year is "inch-long & green". No doubt this simplistic approach has merits, but we have seen times when 3/4" inch long and green worked even better. One of these periods is early in the year when trout are feeding heavily on immature damsel fly nymphs. The nymphs are normally very light-colored. We list them as Green Damsel Nymphs, but they are more of a light olive-gold.

Bachmann's Bead Head Leach
Bead Head Leech, Black Bead Head Leech, Maroon
Bead Head Leech, Brown Bead Head Leech, Olive
Another victum of the Bead Head Leech...
There are many "wormy" looking creatures that live in aquatic environments. Most lakes and weedy streams have dense populations of leeches and aquatic worms. During much of the time they are buried in the substrate or bottom vegetation. However during low light conditions they often forage about where they are exposed to patrolling game fish. Trout and bass seek out these tender morsels and eat them like candy. This is especially true early in the spring before weeds start to grow. Leeches are your most important early season lake flies. If the water temperature is cold, they are most effective when fished slowly along the bottom with a sinking fly line. Swimming leaches are flat and elongated. They swim with an undulating, almost ribbon-like motion.  Bachmann's Marabou Leech is designed to mimic this action. It's flat and has a black bead head that gives it a distinct swimming-leach action. Don't head to your lake without some.

Bead Head Leech, Black
If you only had one size and color for your earliest season fishing, make it a black size six. This fly catches fish. It is worthwhile having the Black Bead Head Leech in all of the sizes. Sometimes trout display a preference for a certain size. Like everything else, leeches start out small and grow bigger.

This is a have to have fly when fishing any mud bottom lake. There are brown and reddish brown leeches in many lakes. Remember, when fishing the early season in many lakes the muddy bottom is often exposed before the weed growth starts later in the year.

Midge Life Cycle by Dave Whitlock, from the book "Guide To Aquatic Trout Foods" - CLICK HERE TO BUY !!!

Midge larvae live in the bottom silts and are unavailable to trout most of the time.  During the pupal stage midges rise from the bottom and are often suspended and rise and fall with the light cycles.  During this stage they are can become a regular staple in the diet of trout, bass and panfish.  It is while midges are suspended in the surface film hatching that they provide the most
exciting fishing.  They are very attractive to trout as they are easy targets.  It is a struggle or midge pupa to get though the surface film and hatching can proceed slowly.

Water Boatmen
Water Boatman Water boatmen have the hind two pairs of legs fitted with hairs and the outer joints of the hind legs are oar-shaped which allows them to paddle and swim. Adults range in length from 3/16 to 3/8 inch long and are usually dull colored brown or olive. Water boatmen often swim in open water where they are easy prey for trout.  They are comfortable in cold water and often a good choice for an early season trout fly in lakes.
Water Boatman, Brown
Water boatmen are reported to occur in fresh water through out most of the world. In certain local ponds lakes and reservoirs they occur in dense populations.  In the edge water of many local rivers with habitats as diverse as the spring fed Deschutes to the glacial fed Sandy water boatmen populations can be very prolific.  When other aquatic insects are still dormant from the cold of winter, water boatmen can be very active.

Bachmann's Damsel Nymph, Green

This is the early season pattern for many lakes.  Fish this fly deep along the bottom.  Give it several very short fast strips and then let it set for a long period. Often you will be surprised trout often take the fly while it is not moving and that you only feel them as you start the next stripping sequence. Damsels can vary in color, often being light insect green in early spring.

Midge Tip AquaLux CamoLux Deep-3 Deep-4 Deep-6
The closer you put your fly to the end of the fish that eats, the more of them will eat it. It's called convenience. If the grocery store is next door you go there more often that if it's twenty miles away. Having the right sink rate of line will enable you to put your fly in the strike zone. Fish in lakes tend to stratify. That means they will often all be at approximately the same depth. Make your cast and let your fly sink a specific length of time. Count the seconds that you let the fly sink before you start your retrieve. When you start hitting fish, remember the count. Chances are you will hit more fish at that same level.

Rio CamoLux Fly Fishing Line for fishing lakes, NEW for 2011
The CamoLux is a stealthy clear camo colored with an intermediate sinking rate of 1.5 – 2.0 inches per second (3.7 cm/s). This line is perfect for fishing subsurface and shallow shore lines. Ideal when stealth is required for wary, selective fish. Made on a low memory supple monofilament core with a coldwater coating and welded loop on the front end. Our recent tests have disclosed that
this line will fish to four feet deep pretty quickly, but will enable you to fish shallow water easily when fish are patrolling the edges of a lake. This often happens early in the season, just after ice-out as the shallow water along the edges of a lake often warms first. The Rio CamoLux® Fly Line has less memory when cold than do most other sinking fly line, which makes it easier to cast when the weather/water are cold during the early season. The line is built with XS Technology for ultimate slickness.

AquaLux® Fly Line
A must-have line for the serious lake angler. Castability has always been a problem with clear intermediate sinking lines because there are no lubricants in the coating and the lines drag through the guides. RIO has solved the problem by incorporating proprietary lubricants into the running line coating that make the line slick. The running line is translucent green while the head is completely clear. With an intermediate sinking rate of 1.5 – 2.0 inches per second (3.7 cm/s), the line is perfect for fishing subsurface and shallow shore lines. Ideal when stealth is required for wary, selective fish. Made on a low memory supple monofilament core with a coldwater coating and welded loop on the front end.
