The Old Steelhead Fly Fisher
Entry Level Fly Fishing Class

The Local Scene
Sandy River
There are a few summer steelhead showing as well as a few bright winter natives. All in all most days you will cover a lot of water to find a few fish. The stormy weather is probably the main cause of slow fishing.  Look for things to get easier when the water warms.
Clackamas River
The Clack is warmer than the Sandy.  It has more summer runs too.
Deschutes River (Locked Gate to Mouth).
Baetis, March Browns and Crane Flies are all producing good trout fishing.  Many days are in the high fifties or low sixties.  The nymph fishing is good most days.  Some days are good dry fly fishing too.
Crooked River
The river is very low (about 65 cfs).  It was 36.6 degrees when we were there last week.  The wind was gusty.  In spite of that there was a great midge hatch and two hours of prolific dry fly fishing during mid-day.
McKenzie & Upper Willamette
The cold weather in the Willamette Valley has retarded the March Brown hatch.  The best is yet to come.

Parachute style flies are constructed so that the hackle is wound horizontally around the up-right wing instead of vertically around hook shank as in conventional flies. The hackle is what gives most dry flies their floatation. The Parachute hackle configuration
allows a fly to float well in rough water.  Parachutes are stable in heavy flows, but are also delicate on smooth surfaces.  They are equally useful on mountain run-off streams, spring creeks and lakes.

Parachutes are extremely popular dry flies.  The single biggest reason is that they are easy for  anglers to see on the water.  Most Parachute style flies are tied with a white wing posts.  White is easy for people to see but doesn't seem to spook trout.  However, Parachutes tied with wings tied from fluorescent materials have shown themselves to be an advantage under certain light conditions and are becoming more and more popular.  Check out our TwiLight (TW) Parachute patterns. They have a fluorescent blue or red Antron loop wing posts that are visible against almost any background. Even young eyes will appreciate these flies.

The most proven dry fly presentation in moving water is the drag free drift.  Odds go way up when you can place your fly perfectly in a rising trout's feeding lane. This may be accomplished only if the fly is visible

Parachute Flies are very popular for imitating mayfly hatches.  Because of the hackle placement, Parachutes ride with the fly body sitting flush on the water.  These versatile patterns may be used to imitate the slim profiles of may fly emergers, duns or spinners.  Under some circumstances Parachutes can even serve as floating nymphs.  Remember you can always use your leader clipper or scissors to trim a fly in the field to make it fit your current situation.

Parachute Adams Traditional, White Wing
This is one of the most popular dry flies in the Pacific Northwest.  It is used to imitate a wide variety of mayfly and caddis species.  It is often the best searching pattern when no surface activity apparent.  The wing is made from white calf body hair.

The Old Steelhead Fly Fisher
An 80 year old man went to the doctor for a check-up and the doctor was
amazed at what good shape the guy was in.

The doctor asked, "To what do you attribute your good health?"

The old timer said, "I'm a steelhead fly fisher and that's why I'm in such
good  shape. I'm up well before daylight and out chasing steelhead up and
down the Sandy River."

The doctor said, "Well, I'm sure that helps, but there's got to be more
to it. How old was your dad when he died?" The old timer said, "Who said
my dad's dead?"

The doctor said, "You mean you're 80 years old and your dad's still
alive?  How old is he?"

The old timer said, "He's 100 yrs old and, in fact, he fished steelhead
with me this morning, and that's why he's still alive... he's a steelhead fly fisher."

The doctor said, "Well, that's great, but I'm sure there's more to  it.
How about your dad's dad? How old was he when he died?"

The old timer said, "Who said my grandpa's dead?"

The doctor said, "You mean you're 80 years old and your grandfather's
still living! How old is he?"

The old timer said, "He's 118 yrs old."

The doctor was getting frustrated at this point and said, "I guess he
went steelhead fly fishing with you this morning too?"

The old timer said, "No... Grandpa couldn't go this morning because he
got married."

The Doctor said in amazement, "Got married!! Why would a 118-year-old
guy want to get married?"

The old timer said, "Who said he wanted to?"
