| Sage 5119-4 TCX Winter Steelhead In The Extreme |
![]() |
| This is the little guy of the TCX two-hand group. It is small, but powerful and extremely versatile. You could well imagine it being a favorite for western streamer swingin’ and lake and beach casting, or being used for small steelhead in rivers such as the Rogue, Grande Ronde and John Day. But would you ever have thought it might become a player on a cold winter river such as the Sandy in Oregon where 2"-3" long flies are the norm and steelhead regularly weigh in double digits? It is true. Get used to it. The Sage 5119-4 TCX offers an extremely stealthy approach and a lot of high energy fun. Never under estimate stealth as a basic component of a successful winter steelhead trip. Wild fish are especially shy and sensitive to line splash. Lighter weight lines enter the water with less of a fan-fair than do heavy ones. As you scale your tackle down one of the things you will become aware of is the sinking efficiency of Rio's T-8 M.O.W. Tips. A 12.5' M.O.W. can deliver a 2.5" unweighted marabou tube fly right into the dining area of most winter steelhead at the right depth to get a very positive response, even when the water is below 40-degrees. |

There are many successful approaches to catching winter steelhead
with two-hand fly rods and sinking tip lines. In order to cover all
of the different water depths and current speeds, some anglers carry
many different lengths and sink rates of line tips to get their
flies down to fishable depths. Other anglers find that they use the
same rod, the same tip, and the same fly most of the winter. That is
because many steelhead follow the same routes within a river, and
only certain spots along these routes are accessible with any swung
fly. A common approach is to select a sinking tip such as a 15'
type-6 or 9'-13' of T-11 or T14 and hunt in the water where
such a tip will fish at its best. There are a lot of steelhead that
hang out in such places. The engineers at Scientific Anglers with
input from keen anglers such as Garry Sandstrom and Steve Choate
have built a series of lines that provide the most useful sink-rate
built seamlessly into a Skagit line. With this simple approach there are
no loop to loop connections to get hung up in your rod guides while
you are "stringing-up" or playing fish. These lines are designed to
fish at normal depths with unweighted flies. If you think you need
to fish deeper, simply tie on a weighted fly and/or adjust your
casting angle. I rigged up a Scientific Anglers 520-grain Integrated Sinking Tip line on my Sage 7126-4 TCX rod and have left it rigged up while fishing the Deschutes in October. It is a perfect match for my casting style and most of the water I fish sunk flies on the Sandy, Clackamas and Deschutes rivers. This line perform smoothly in every respect. It is pretty cool to fish without the annoyance of loop-to-loop connections clinking through your rod guides. |

| Pro Tube Cones And Discs |
| Pro Tube Systems Cones and Discs are Eye-Candy for your flies that provide under-water sound and action that attracts fish. Any cone on the front of your fly will form a soft spot in the flow of water behind it allowing the materials on the fly to "open-up" and move around easier. Pro tube cones fit tightly on Pro Tying Tubes, but can be changed easily so that an angler with a selection of flies and cones can customize a fly while on the water. Simply slide off one cone and replace it with one of another color, configuration or size. |
|
This is a brand new design for multi purpose usage. Use it in the front of the fly to create turbulence and volume to soft materials, or use it on the body of the fly for lifting the wing, hackle etc. A lot of the European Fly tiers also use it in the back for better swimming characteristics. This cone has little holes which act as sound producers as the water rushes through them. Many anglers believe that this sound gets a fish's attention. |

The Pro Conedisc is arrow shaped so they create a vortex around the fly to allow soft materials to "open-up" and wiggle as the fly is swung across the river currents. This shape of cone is designed to leave the water with a minimum of disturbance when the fly is lifted from the water to be re-cast. |
|
|||
| They are heavy enough to help your fly get down, but not so heavy as to be hung up in softer flows. These are a great addition to Intruder and Prom Dress type flies. d> | ||||

Is a brand new disc design. Use it in the front of the fly to create turbulence and volume to soft materials, or use on the body of the fly for lifting the wing, hackle etc. A new tendency we see developing in Europe is that some anglers also use it in the back for better swimming characteristics. The optimized disc design makes it very easy to lift of the water, and light as a feather to cast. The shape allows the tier to make “less than perfect” heads, and still get a good results. |
|
|||
|
The soft and flexible material gives the possibility to change the disc size, color or even change to another disc type is desired. All Pro discs have exactly the same diameter and pre tension in the center hole, so what you believe is the right color or what you think the fishing situation dictates is entirely up to you. Just snap it off and put on another one. That is total flexibility!! All in all a super cool multi function disc that gives you options like never before. |
