Bead Head Nymphs A trout eats about twenty percent of his diet from the river’s surface, and eighty percent from beneath its surface. As anglers in pursuit of trout, more often than not this means that we need to get down and dirty to find our quarry. Bead head nymphs are the most popular as well as the most effective way to do this. These nymphs are most often tied with counter bored brass or tungsten beads. Just as our friends across the pond discovered long ago, these flies are fished effectively in tandem, with some techniques utilizing more than two flies, like Czech nymphing. Be sure to have a box full of these weighted flies for your next day on the water to insure success. |

The brass bead head fly has become one of the most popular fly types. This is because the weight of the brass bead helps keep the fly very close to the bottom where trout are used to seeing and capturing their food. The flash of the brass bead has also proven to be very attractive to several other kinds of sport fish such as bass and panfish. Possibly a bead just makes the fly easier for the fish to locate. The Bead Head flies listed in our site are offered in the most productive sizes. A Breif History of Bead Head Nymphs,
and European Fishing Methods Locally, bead head flies are usually fished under "floats" called strike indicators by anglers using fly fishing gear. Bead head nymphs are often fished on multiple-fly rigs. Fishing two and three fly rigs is very popular. This fishing technique is probably just as effective as the Tyrolean method, but remains legal because most local trout rivers are regulated as "catch and release" only. Fly fishing tournaments are a popular form of recreation in Europe. Vladi Trzebunia from Poland, was the 1989 Gold medalist and member of the Polish team. This team took the fly fishing world by storm when they introduced the Polish nymph. That year, with this fly and the newly created method of fishing known today as Polish Nymphing, Vladi caught more fish by himself than the next three ranked teams combined. "Czech Nymphing" is very much like the locally evolved method and often employs woven body nymphs constructed with gold beads. Bead Heads are also popular in the construction of many flies used in still water. |

About Strike Indicators
A strike indicator is a small bright colored bobber used in fly fishing when presenting a dead-drifted nymph, or any fly that is to small to see. The most popular application in the winter and early spring, is to place the indicator on the leader at a distance where the nymph(s) will be suspended barely above the bottom of the river. When a trout eats the nymph, the indicator wil stop or be pulled under so that the angler can strike and set the hook. Since various depths might be fished in a single run, it pays to use indicators that are easy to move up or down the leader. Indicators that are lightweight and compact are easiest to cast. The angler will want a variety of colors of indicators to contrast with the light conditions. |

| Frog Hair Ultimate Strike Indicators | ||||
| Frog Hair Strike Indicators incorporate a quick and easy line threading system that allows for fast, strategic and secure adjustments on all knotless leaders. As the fisherman moves up or down the stream, he or she will encounter the need to adjust the depth at which the fly rides. With the Frog Hair Strike Indicator, the fisherman simply grabs the indicator and slides it into the desired position, lets go, and continues fishing. Because the indicator adjustment utilizes friction grip technology, there are no rubber bands to twist, no toothpicks to tangle on and no sticky residue left on your line. The Ultimate Strike Indicator system also can be set-up as a "Slider". Set one rubber stop at the depth you want to fish. Then set the other near your split shot. Let the strike indicator slide on your leader between the two |

stops. This set-up can really aid casting
as the bulky strike indicator is near the flies when the cast is
made and then it slides up the leader as the weighted flies sink
to the bottom. This system is most helpful when heavy nymphs and
larger indicators are used. Because the rubber stops are held in
place by friction, they can be moved and reconfigured instantly
and often. Micro (3/8" x 3/16"), Small (11/16" x 3/8"), Medium (7/8" x 9/16"), Large (1" x 11/16") |

| Royal Wulff Ambush Line |
![]() |
| Royal Wulff's new trout and steelhead line is designed to roll cast easily with single-handed rods. Promotes easy roll-casting for distance in close quarters. Designed with a short, 20-foot, weighted front end, marked by a color change in the line, from lime green to blue. This “change point” creates a visual reference point for intuitive casting. Front-loaded with a thin running line, it excels at distance with traditional or haul casts. Features welded loop and J3 coating. | |

The aggressive front taper of the Wulff
Ambush line allows anglers to fish in the tightest of spots, and
the worst of conditions. Whether steeple casting against high
banks on the Deschutes River, or punching tight loops into
horrendous winds on the Idaho prairies, this line does it all.
This fine brown was caught in a howling wind and rain storm
utilizing the Ambush line which was more than sufficient to
punch through these tough conditions. |
