Sport Fish Of The Mexican Pacific Shoreline
When the snow flies in the northern USA, fly fishing takes a back seat to indoor recreations, except for some hardy winter steelhead anglers. Yet south of the border the air and water temperatures are more hospitable to lightweight clothing. While glamour species like billfish, dorado and tuna get most of the press, there are many other hard fighting game fish that inhabit Mexican coastal waters. We have found some that make excellent targets for the serious saltwater fly-rodder.

Roosterfish
These exotic looking members of the Jack family eat streamers and poppers with slashing strikes and fight hard after being hooked. They can be elusive to find and become perceptive quickly when pressured by humans. In some respects they have the same angling stature as Permit except Roosters seem to feed exclusively on smaller fish. The average Mexican Roosterfish that are caught by fly anglers is 4-25 pounds, but fish over 50-pounds have been landed.

Pargo
There are many kinds of snappers that live along the rocky outcrops of the Latin American Pacific coast. The term Pargo is loosely applied to several of them, but most often refers to the Cubera Snapper which can attain weights of nearly 100-pounds. Most Pargos caught by fly anglers weigh less than 20-pounds. Most larger ones have the power to get down in the rocks and break the leader. Most of the Pargos that we have caught have been with sinking lines and deep sunk sardine patterns. Reportedly pargos do take poppers as well.

Blue Fin Trevally
You better get up early in the morning if you want to catch some of these scrappy shore line feeders. They are most active in the low light light. Sometimes call "Blue Star", they are one of the most beautiful fish to be encountered in coastal waters. The fight is a strong, steady darting pull. Most of the time they run for open water. Seem to mostly feed on smaller fish. Have done best with a 400gr. sinking tip line and a sardine pattern fly, working water 10'-20' deep. These guys like the surge areas around big rocks.

Jack Crevelle
Called Toro (bull) in much of Mexico, it is one of the most common shoreline species. Can be found seasonally in all Mexican coastal waters. They are not sought after for food fish so they are available in large numbers for catch and release. Crevelle are hard fighting, interesting fish to catch and can fill in dog days for more glamorous species. They inhabit a wide variety of water types from shallow flats to raging surf. They also travel into brackish and have brief encounter with freshwater. Sinking lines and streamers is the common approach to catching them.

Green Jacks
Seem to be more common during the winter months. Usually found in small schools in the slicks on the down-tide of big offshore rocks. We have also seen Green Jacks schooled up with a mixture of Jack Crevelle and Pacific Yellowtail. The Greenies that we have caught average 3-6 pounds and are great sport fish on 7/8 weight gear. These fish pull hard for their size and are aggressive biters. Green Jacks feed on small fish and smaller flies are required..

Cabrilla
These are a kind of grouper that love the areas around steep cliffs and the rubble that erodes off of them. Remember when Billy Bob won the bass tournament by pulling a five pounder from under the stump with a short, stout rod and 20-pound test. Fishing Cabrilla is a similar game, except that many of these fish weight over 10-pounds and have been eating steroids and pumping iron. When one broke my 30-pound tippet, the guide replied in disgust, "too small" and grabbed the 50-pound butt section. "Use

this", he said. I ran straight 50-Ande Tournament line for a five-foot leader and the next two fish still broke me off by running into caves. One took me down to one knee before the line was broken on a rock. I had locked the reel up as tight as possible. The line was a Rio DeepSea 500gr. The rod a Sage 1290-4 Xi2 with fore grip. I kept the line to about 35-feet in length. This gave me the most advantageous angle with the water I was fishing, thought to be about 20-30 feet deep. Only landed the little ones to about 8-pounds. Don't know how large the big ones were. This is a whole new arena in fly fishing for me. Got to do it again.

The programs and instruction are free. So are the coffee and snacks.
All of the latest tools and materials used in these demonstrations
will be available for sale. Feel free to bring your own tools and materials and tie along.

One-Day Winter Steelhead Fly Fishing Schools
Take a pontoon boat ride down a Local River with:
Mark Bachmann, Brian Silvey, Josh Linn and Ron Lauzon.
Because of the overwhelming demand for these schools, we've added a fourth instructor.

Winter Steelhead fly fishing is very practical if you know how. Being able to find fish and being able to present the fly properly are key factors. Save yourself five years of experimenting on your own.
We will show you how.
These are schools that will cover a lot of water and fishing knowledge in one day. Length of the class is 8-hours on the water. All schools conducted on the Sandy River. Big, safe, roomy pontoon boats will enable us to cover six miles of river during the class. Two students per boat/instructor format.

Learn how to locate steelhead water and how to approach it. Emphasis will be on giving you a solid foundation of skills to build on, with a high priority given to hooking fish during the class. We want to give you maximum advantage by having as many fish hooked during this class as possible. Nothing teaches you more about fishing than being where fish are being hooked and landed. Emphasis will be on spey rod casting and sinking-tip line fishing, but will also cover single handed rod techniques.

What you need to bring:
Bring your own waders and rain gear. Bring your own rod/reel set up if you want to.
A variety of premium quality 2-hand and single-handed rod/reel set-ups will be available for you to use at no extra charge. Flies are supplied.
A hot lunch will be served on the river.
There will be a very short rest period after lunch.
Meet at The Fly Fishing Shop at 6:30am for orientation.  Coffee and donuts will be served.

Watch an expert guide as he fishes and discloses the secrets and proven methods that put fish on the beach. Get a lot of hands-on help so that you too can be productive.
Arrive back at The Fly Fishing Shop at 6:00pm.

Brian O'Keefe is heading up a fly accuracy and distance casting competition at the Oregon FFF Expo in Albany March 7-8. There will be great prizes, and back slapping admiration from your peers. There will be events on both days. Categories for youth, angler and pro, male and female. This is the first annual Oregon State Fly Casting Championships. For those who have not attended the new FFF Expo it is a great event. The format is new, expanded and very nice. Tons of exhibitors, tiers, classroom activities, and in general a very well run and attended fly show.

Improve your success and make your fishing more enjoyable. The most basic element in the fly fishing experience is how the line and rod interact to present the fly. The fly line is the most critical link in presenting a fly. A greater understanding of fly lines will help in selecting the best line that suits your casting style and rod action. Line building will bring a new dimension to your fly fishing experience. Gaining a greater understanding of how a fly line profile delivers the fly, will give confidence in making alterations. A custom tailored fly line, like a personal

hand-tied fly, is an expression of your prospective, providing a tactical advantage to resolving a fishing situation. Unique lines can be designed to counter seemingly impossible casting/fishing situations. A custom line can be tailored to fly further distances, sink deeper and faster, slice through gusty winds, and more. Freshwater to saltwater with single or two-handed, a customized line can drastically improve your fishing success.

This six-hour class will dispel the myths and mysteries in designing and building fly fishing lines. The class will cover three major topics:

*How line profiles (lengths, shapes and sizes) interact with the fly rod and how each profile best presents the fly.

*An interactive group session will analyze and configure several line designs to best suit rods and/or solve a fishing situations.

*Hands-on demonstrations in making several line-to-line and loop splices. This will include knotted, bonded (glued) and welded type splices as well as use of different fly line base materials.

Included is “How to Design Fly Lines” booklet as a class text and future reference. Bring your questions on fly lines, floating and sinking. Ask about best fitting your rods for top performance, single or two-handed. Come with your toughest fishing situations and find a line that is the cure. This interactive class will focus on answering your questions and empowering you to find the fly line solution.
Al Buhr has been designing fly lines for 30-plus years for single and two-handed rods. He has worked with Leon Chandler, Jimmy Green and currently works with Bruce Richards of Scientific Anglers. This 6 hour class is $125.00 and all proceeds go to Native Fish Society.
February 16^th , Saturday, 9:00am - 4:00pm, with a 1-hour lunch break. Ten students maximum.
In addition, The Fly Fishing Shop will donate 10% of it's gross in-house retail sales for February 16^thto Native Fish Society.
