| Nearly everyone on our crew owns an Abel Spey Reel. Mark owns both an Abel Spey and a Switch reel. These reels come with either ported or solid spools. They may be the perfect blend of 100+ years of incremental improvement, joined with American craftsmanship. There is no other reel of this type that compares. The finish on these reels will boggle your mind. In colors they are nearly infinitely customizable. Mechanically they are incredibly simple. They have low inertial start-up, but enough guts to get the job done. They are finger-tip and palm controllable with one of the smoothest, most comfortable rims that ever graced a fly reel. We will up-grade your Abel Spey Reel with the new stronger springs, which will double the drag pressure at the heaviest setting, which has been a very popular improvement. The Abel Spey Reel has developed a cult following amongst the most experienced upper level steelheaders? No doubt about it. This is the Rolex of Spey Reels. And they are very collectable, as things of the highest quality always are. | |

The Steelhead-Spey Revolution really heated up around 1990, with the publishing of
Trey Combs' great book, Steelhead Fly Fishing. Because of the long-belly
lines employed at the time, rods in the 14'-15' 9/10-weight sizes were
most popular. Now shorter-belly, super-efficient Skagit/Scandi shooting head lines are
more popular. Rods are still evolving to be ever lighter in swing-weight and line
size. Seven-weight rods have emerged as the most popular all around size of
two-hander for steelhead in the Pacific Northwest. Actions vary from
super-fast to slower than medium. For our discussion here, seven-weight rods
can vary
from 6/7 through 7/8 weight sizes, and will fall into the Skagit Head
range of 450-575 grains in weight. The most popular steelhead rod lengths currently
are from 12 1/2' and 13 1/2' long. Last week we did inventory and
we carry over two dozen models of 6/7/8-weight Spey Rods. During the
winter, rods that function best with Skagit heads weighing 500-575 grains
are most popular. In that category we carry sixteen models, and they all
sell. Of course some are vastly more popular than others. Pictured below are the rod/reel/line combos that accompany me during the early winter months on most river in the Pacific Northwest. This set has evolved over a period of time and is up-dated as necessary. The numerical order in the picture is just how they laid out on the boat seat, not the order of popularity. All these rods will throw the same lines, but each has an operating window and personality that is distinct from the other rods in the picture. |

1. Echo3 7130 w/ Lamson
Waterworks ARX 3.5 Reel, Airflo Miracle Braid Shooting Line, 560 S.A.
Skagit Extreme + 12' T11. This rod comes in either green finished
fishing rod or white instructors rod. I have both, and use both. The one
pictured here is the white instructors rod. It gets a lot of play during
schools and in videos showing casting sequences. This is a great all
around rod for beginners or experienced steelhead fishers. 2. Sage 7136-4 Z-AXIS w/ Nautilus 12CCF Reel, Airflo Miracle Shooting, Rio iFlight 550 and 10' of T-14. The Z-Axis series is no longer in production and as a retailer, I should replace it with the newer technology 7136-4 ONE, but this is such a great stick, I just haven't got around to it. It is often my "go-to" for anything Skagit. 3. G. Loomis 1567/8-4NRX w/ Lamson Waterworks Lightspeed 3.5 Reel, 520 S.A. Skagit Extreme Integrated Line. This is the lightest weight rod/reel outfit in the arsenal. Adapting my casting style to it took some time until I realized that this rod takes nearly no amount of physical effort. It will pump out incredibly long casts with the shortest acceleration immaginable. 4. R.L. Winston 7133-4B2X w/ Nautilus 11/12NV Reel, Frog Hair Shooting Line, Airflo 570 Skagit Compact, 10-13' T11 or T14. Within the price rang, 7133B2X is the most popular steelhead rod we have ever sold. It literally matches up with any Skagit line from 500-600 grains. It does Scandi as well as Skagit. 5. Beulah 1327-4 Platinum w/ Abel Spey Reel, Frog Hair Shooting Line, Airflo 540 Skagit Compact, 10-13' T11 or T14. This is easily the best Spey rod in the under $600 category and maybe the longest casting rod on this page. The marriage of three different graphite composites and boron within the engineering of this rod makes it load easy and very fast to build great line speed. |

Maybe the “Sweetheart” in the
series! Mainly because this rod can be fished confidently
anywhere in the lower 48 and abroad for summer or winter
Steelhead and will cross-over into Chinook territory. Beulah's
new 13’2” Platinum is not an 8 weight in 7 weight clothing, it
is an extremely “Crisp” 7 weight that loads easily with a
variety of lines and casting styles. The finished rod weighs
only 6.8 ounces making it easy to fish long hard days on the
water chasing “Steel”. Ridiculously light in hand this rod
balances with reels as light as 8 ounces and handles reels
nicely to 11 ounces. You won’t have a hard time finding a place
for this rod in your two-handed quiver! |

This rod is weapon of choice for the Beulah staff as
well as many other dedicated two-hand steelhead fisherman. This rod
can do the work of many 13'-14'0 rods, is forgiving enough to be a
sound choice for the beginning Spey caster and refined enough for
those "in the know" casters with many years of Spey experience
behind them. This is the rod that put Beulah on the map with the
coined phrase "Dude it's a $400.00 rod that casts, feels, and looks
like a $700.00 rod". Recommended lines: |

| Echo Seven-Weight Spey Rod Comparison |
![]() |
| Echo produces three different thirteen foot seven weight
two-hand fly rods. Each has their own mission, action and
personality. Dec Hogan designed the DH Series to be the perfect line
of Skagit Rods. Tim Rajeff designed his own two versions: the TR and
the Echo3. Whereas the 7130-4DH has a typical Dec Hogan/Ed Ward
parabolic action, the 7130-4TR is more muscular through the butt and
mid-sections. This enables the TR to throws both Skagit and lighter
weight Scandi heads equally well. Both the DH and TR series have
been well accepted, but since the TR is more versatile, it has
become the more popular of the two. The Echo3 is made from higher modulus graphite. It has a faster action and is lighter in weight than the TR, which makes it much, much faster than the DH. It is a very good Skagit rod, but is an exceptional Scandi rod. Because of the more expensive higher modulus graphite used in the construction of the blank, the Echo3 is $200 more than each of the other two Echo Spey series. This last winter (2012) I used both the TR and Echo3 rods a lot while fishing for winter steelhead. Both rods were equipped with Airflo Skagit Compact 540-grain heads and various sinking tips. After experimenting with both rods with a number of different brands and weights of Skagit heads, the 540's were selected because they seemed most comfortable all around. Both rods are very pleasant to fish with. The Echo3 seems to have slightly more range, and is much lighter in swing weight. Also the 7130-4 Echo3 is on of the finest Scandi rods I've ever cast. It gets my nod and is worth the extra $200, especially if you are going to fish summer steelhead using Scandi heads. |

Grains: 450-540 This is a very popular size for steelhead and smaller salmon. This will prove to be a great all-around rod for Deschutes steelhead, and will also prove to be the perfect tool for most Oregon winter steelhead as well. So far E3-7130 has attracted the most attention of any two-hand rod in the Echo3 series. Tim's top picks in Airflo Lines that bring out the best performance with this Echo E3 rod model are: Scandi Compact 450-grain, Delta 7/8 and Skagit Compact 540-grain. This is the one we've been waiting for, the modern all around
steelhead rod. This rod was designed to do it all: Scandi, Skagit,
touch and go, or sustained anchor, this rod likes them all. It also
likes anadromous fish from 5-20 pounds. so do we. This is by far the
lightest, most advance rod on this page. Like a faster higher-strung
horse, there may be a period of adjustment period. When you get one
of these babies to be your servant, your casting skills have been
elevated. In trained hands this rod throws loops that are mind
boggling...oh, so easy! |

| A crisp casting 13-footer
that, under the traditional line rating system system would be an
8/9, but since the shooting heads for the Scandinavian style of
casting are rated by their actual weight, we rate them in grams for
Europe and Grains for the North American market. It's designed to
cast short heads Scandi-style, but is very capable of handling a
wide variety of casting styles with the proper lines. It's a great

This is an extremely light rod for summer steelhead and small
salmon. It handles a 450 to 475 grain Skagit line, plus the
sink-tip. It casts well in light winds with small to medium weighted
flies. You'll appreciate how effortlessly this rod covers the water
from 50-90 feet. If the conditions are right you can loop on a
floating tip and fish dry flies effectively with this rod. (Travis
Johnson uses this rod a lot and his favorite line is an Airflo

Termed by George Cook, "The
Death Star" of spey rods." The name really caught on. George has
already taken some massive Alaskan Kings, and big bobos with it, as
well as several Dean River steelhead. Mark Bachmann has fished this
rod for ten sessions on the Deschutes and says, "If you are into
generating line speed, you will love this lightweight rod. Don't
think this rod is just for expert casters. Beginning Spey casters
adapt to this rod easily. Because it lacks all of the harsh aspects
of its predecessors, it is exceptionally easy to time. Because this
rod is on the cutting edge, anyone who fishes this rod will
naturally become a better caster. This may be the best ever
steelhead/salmon rod by any manufacturer for fishing in the wind.
The 7126-4 TCX is like nothing else you have ever fished with, and
will become a pivotal mark in the scientific progression of
steelhead rod design." |

13' - #7/8 Deer Creek Spey Rod Test Report
The Dear Creek 13' 7/8 is a fast European action type rod. For its price, it is exceptionally crisp, kind of like a downsized version of a Sage 8134-4 ZAXIS. It rocks with a 550-grain Rio Skagit Flightor an Airflo 540-grain Skagit Compact and 12' of T-11, or any of the Medium M.O.W. tips. There are a number of distinguishing features to the Deer creek Series of rods. After inspecting the flawless deep maroon finish, tasteful appointments and banded cork work, you will no doubt realize that the handle is unusually small in diameter. At first this felt alien to me. It was only after experimenting and analyzing a variety of casting strokes, that it became apparent that to drive this vehicle you need only finger tip control. This rod has an action that demands that the caster conserves energy. If line speed is the measure of worth, this rod at $359.95 is a bargain! |

An extraordinary lightweight medium-fast
action two-hand rod that will make effective fly presentations at
all distances. Since its introduction in 2007, this has been one of
the most popular Spey rods for both summer and winter steelhead. The
B2X78133 has the ability to feel very comfortable with a wide range
of line weight and fly sizes. It is also adaptable to wide range of
fish sizes from 4 to over 20 pounds. Will feel equally comfortable with tiny
skaters or 3" long stinger flies fished with T-11 or T-14. Our favorite reel to balance this rod is the Nautilus 12. Andre Scholz Scandinavian Shooting Head Recommendation: 447-478 grains. Floating Line Recommendations: Airflo Scandi Compact 480, Rio AFS 460, Rio WindCutter 7/8 Use: 540-570 grain Skagit Compact for sinking tip work. Rod weight: 6 3/4 Ounces. |
