| Switch Rods |
|
Fly fishing for summer steelhead really caught-on in the late 1960's. Most anglers started with fiber glass rods from 8' to 9' in length. When lighter, stiffer graphite rods became popular during the 1970's, 9' rods became the standard. Through the 1980's, newer and even lighter-weight graphite materials made 9 1/2' and ten foot rods practical and popular. Then in the early 1990's Spey rod fishing became the rage in the Pacific Northwest. Fourteen and fifteen foot 9-weight rods made winter steelhead fly fishing much easier than any single-hand rod. Smaller spey rods became very popular for summer steelhead. Lately, shorter Scandinavian style Spey rods have become in vogue with many steelhead and salmon anglers fishing any time of year. These rods average twelve to thirteen feet long. Maybe, like the single hand rods getting longer during the 1960 through 1980 era; spey rods used for steelhead are getting shorter since the Millenium. A category of rods called "Switch Rods" may be the missing link between longer single-hand rods and shorter two-hand rods. Switch rods actually bridge the gap between single-hand and two-hand fly rods and offer some of the advantages of each type. Switch rods are usually around eleven feet long and have a handle configuration similar to a two hand rod. The eleven-foot rod concept is anything but new. European anglers used long fly rods to catch trout long before fly fishing reels became readily available. Eleven foot is still a popular length of rod for fishing in Briton's locks (large lakes). Swithch rods have the perfect length for anglers fishing many Great Lakes tributaries for steelhead and lake run brown trout. In the Pacific Northwest, Switch rods are becoming popular with anglers fishing from the beach in bays & estuaries for sea run Cutthroats. In recent years, this length of rod has had a big growth in popularity with both trout and steelhead anglers in southern Oregon. This is largely do to the promotion by such well know custom rod builders as Bob Meiser and Gary Anderson. Winston introduced an 11' #7 in it's B2X line year before last. It quickly gained popularity with anglers fishing for larger trout and steelhead in a variety of water types. G. Loomis brought out two new eleven footers in their NativeRun GLX Series last year. They have been well received by both American and Canadian fly fishers. Sage's new Z-Axis eleven foot Switch rods are designed to throw aerosolized back casts and every type of spey cast while using one or both hands. Being able to easily "Switch" casting styles is what Switch are all about. Switch rods can also appeal to any angler who, for what ever reasons, lacks the physical requirements for single-hand, double-haul casts. Anglers who have developed wrist, arm, or shoulder ailments can benefit by using both hands for casting instead of one hand. Also anglers who have found that even smaller two-hand rods are too heavy for them, will find that Switch rods have much lighter in swing weights. |
