A finely tuned instrument - lightweight and highly responsive.
That's what experts are saying about our new BVK series of fly rods. Engineered to the highest performance standards, the BVK utilizes new materials that dramatically reduce weight while creating an aggressive blend of power and strength. The result is amazing performance and an incredible price. |

BVK rods are designed to excel in both presentation and distance
aspects of casting and fishing. Customers have been amazed at how
well BVK's cast. They are smooth and easy at all distances. These rods are fairly fast, yet super-lightweight. For example, an eight-weight BVK weighs about as much as the conventional six-weight rod. Three through five-weight BVK rods are made to protect fine tippets. You will find that 5X tippet material is difficult to break with these rods if your knots are tied well. We all know that favorite trout rods are engineered this way. As lightweight as BVK models are, they are also incredibly strong due to some magic materials engineering within each rod blank. Lefty says, "My friends on the Outer Banks of NC have been catching albacore (Little Tuna) weighing more than 12 pounds. While testing prototypes I used a 20-pound tippet and tried to break the BVK —no luck. Customers tell us BVK's throw a long line as well as any rod in their class." BVK Rods Feature: rich translucent olive blanks are topped with matching braided carbon fiber reel seats, REC titanium recoil stripping guides, ultra lightweight chromium-impregnated stainless snake guides and flor grade grips that are comfortably contoured and uniquely contrasted. |

RPM (Rod
Power Matrix) Presentation: Factor - 2.5 Distance: Factor - 2 Lifting: Factor - .5 BVK Rods are designed to be easy to cast and present flies delicately under normal conditions to normal size fish. Not a lot of emphasis has been put on lifting heavy fish. Smooth presentation is the prime design factor. |

Rio Steelhead Scandi vs. Airflo Tactical Steelhead Spey There is a dogma that only very large flies dressed with lead eyes and fished deep with fast sinking tips are appropriate for catching winter steelhead from most rivers in the pacific Northwest. There is little doubt that a Skagit line with a heavy tip has accounted for many steelhead, and under many circumstances this type of tackle will remain very popular, and productive. Some anglers new to the game forget that even when the water is off-color, wild steelhead have acute senses for detecting the rip and tear of noisy casts and the splash of heavy flies. A poorly timed cast which lands your pet chunk of T-14 on the surface with impact of a diving osprey can send all the steelhead to the other side of the river. Ripping your lead-eye intruder across the surface to set up up your double spey or snap-tee cast can have the same effect. Ditto for fishing too heavy and getting your fly hung up repeatedly. This doesn't mean you should sell all your big flies and Skagit lines. There are many times and places where they will always remain your best options. But there are also times when a stealthy approach will pay big dividends. When fishing for steelhead any time of year, pretending you are archery hunting for elk isn't a bad frame of mind to put yourself into. As luck would have it, in this day and age, there is tackle available for every fishing situation you will ever find. A fly fisher who uses a two-hand rod equipped with a reel loaded with a shooting line can not only change the length and density of the sinking tip, but also the entire head system to match changing fishing conditions. Some pieces of water will always require fast sinking lines and heavy lines, but many do not. When the water is colored, steelhead will often travel and hold in water that is less than four feet deep. Often the best water is moving at moderate speed. I know a couple of very productive steelhead guides that have their clients use type-3 tips much of the time. An even stealthier approach is to use a Scandi Head with a sinking PolyLeader (VersiLeader). These line/leader systems land flies very softly and fish them with a more delicate approach because the thin sinking PolyLeader has less mass and therefore less water drag. There are two new line systems that are perfectly designed for this stealthy approach. They are the Rio Steelhead Scandi and the Airflo Tactical Steelhead Spey Shooting Head. Both lines are designed to work well with lightweight tips such as PolyLeaders or VeriLeaders. The Airflo Tactical Spey line comes with an eight foot long removable floating tip which has a grooved surface to provide more grip on the water to help keep the line anchored for casting during windy conditions. Because of this the Airflo line costs $10 more than the Rio. For winter fishing, this eight foot long tip was removed and a 10-foot long sinking Versileader was added. Three different seven weight rods were used: Sage 7136-4 Z-AXIS, Winston 7133-4, and Echo 7130-4 TR. The two heads that were used on these rods were the Airflo 520-grain and the Rio 450-grain. At first this may seem like an uneven match. But, as you will see it is not. All lines and tips were weighed with a digital scale. Advertised at 520-grains, the Airflo I tested actually weighed 510-grains on my scale. The floating tip weighed 64-grains. With the this tip removed the body of the line weighed 436-grains. Advertised at 450-grains, the Rio line actually weighed 430-grains. The Rio head was 33' long, and the Airflo with the floating tip removed was 31' long. Both lines measured out to be what they were advertised as. When comparing the two heads side by side there is a significant difference in tapers. The Rio is much larger in diameter in the rear. The Airflow is larger in diameter at the tip. The Airflo line has a longer belly and a shorter front taper. Surprisingly, there didn't seem like there was a significant difference in casting and fishing performance between the two heads. Possibly the Airflo with its larger tip diameter turns over larger flies a little better. Possibly the Rio with its longer tip taper stays in the loop a little longer for distance casting. Small changes in your casting stroke and timing will easily compensate for the differences in these line designs. They both give excellent performance with smaller and medium size flies. The loops on the Rio line were slightly smaller in diameter and passed through the rod guides easier. Neither line posed any problems in this department. Airflo uses a color coding system to identify line weights. Rio uses printed numbers on the line. The Rio system is superior in that regard. Neither head retains significant amounts of memory in any water/air temperatures that they would be used in. Tests varied from hot days on the Deschutes to cold days on the Sandy. The Airflo floating tip with its grooved surface dose stick to the water, which provides some advantages when anchoring the line, especially when casting in the wind. This tip weighs 64-grains. In comparison a 10-foot Rio VersiLeaders can weigh between 38-110 grains Depending on their density. Both lines cast all of the VersiLeaders as well a T-8 M.O.W. tips. The Airflow line did seem to have a slight edge when the leaders or tips weighed more than 100-grains. |

Rio Steelhead Scandi Line
NEW for 2011 |
||||
| Rio's latest Scandinavian style shooting head is designed for the two-hand and switch rod steelhead fly fishers. With shorter head lengths and shorter front tapers than previous Rio Scandi designs, they are ideal for casting larger steelhead flies and sinking VersiLeaders. The head size options have been carefully selected, and tuned for the most common rods used by modern steelhead fly fishers, and feature Rio's newest skinny welded loops on each end for easy rigging. In 31' lengths they are meant for very short spey rods and switch rods of 12' or less in lengths. In lengths of 32' to 34' they are meant for rods of 12' and longer. |

Tactical Steelhead Spey
Shooting Head Take the tight loop and casting ease of a Scandi Compact head and couple it to the versatility of a multi-tip line and you have the basis for the Airflo Tactical Steelhead shooting head. To help cut through the wind and to make casting modest sink tips and larger flies easier, the Tactical Steelhead has a larger tip diameter than the Scandi Compact. With a smooth front taper and removable floating tip the newest two-hand line from Airflo will convert from a floating line to sink tip better than any existing line. The mint green colored heads come in a #5 weighing 400 grains all the way to a #9 weighing 670 grains. Unique to the Tactical Steelhead is the 8 foot removable ridged floating tip. The ridged tip helps anchor the cast. Airflo's indestructible heavy duty loops connect the tip to the head and the head to the running line. All sizes are made on a low stretch 30lb core.
