Fishing Reports and Prospects

Good At Home - Sandy & Clackamas Rivers
In spite of the early winter drought both of our local rivers have bright fish in reasonable numbers. Some days they bite. Some days they they are tough. When the water is low, clear and cold, look for fish in deeper water. This can be challenging fishing for the fly angler. Steelhead can be very spooky under these conditions. Keep your line slap to a minimum. Try smaller flies. The early run of fish looks to be slightly stronger than expected. When it rains, be out there.

Deschutes & John Day Rivers
All the major east side streams are holding up well because of the mild winter. Water flows and weather patterns are currently very stable. There is almost no pressure and the steelhead are rested and grabby. All summer type presentations work. Wet fly swing with floating lines has been effective. Don't forget your sink tips and big wiggly flies also. Trout fishing on the Deschutes has been outstanding also. Whitefish are very aggressive this time of year. Small to mid-size nymphs, San Juan Worms and Glo Bugs are the main fare. It's banker's hours fishing. The days are short.

The Metolius River
This large spring creek near Sisters, OR can provide some outstanding winter fly fishing in a spectacular pine forest setting. Because of stable water temperatures of the aquifer native Redsides and Bull Trout feed through the winter. Of special interest are the many large Bull Trout that are available (many 5-15 pounds). They eat large streamers swung deep.

Florida Keys
	Winter time blues, bluefish that is, we had great action with many species today including those toothy bluefish. They do jump and they will bite you! Other species caught today include redfish, seatrout, ladyfish and some bruiser Jack Crevalle. Cobia are starting to show up now and will run through the cool months until about the time the tarpon start showing. Weather wise its been a little breezy and cooler with lows in the upper 50's to upper 60's. Highs are creeping to around 78 degrees mostly sunny. Bones are around as well as permit on the warmer days.

Loreto, Mexico
Nice Roosterfish off Isla Coronado's satellite island to the northwest, and along the shorelines of the peninsula just across the channel. San Bruno, San Basilio, Nopolo, Bailandra, Tintorerra, Punta Baja all seeing Roosterfish. You'll see them feeding in the mid to late mornings. Olive/white streamer patterns and clousers are working big right now on them. There are a few Sierra Mackerel around and lots of barracuda. Pargo and Cabrilla are still frequent.

Bara De Navidad
	Dorado, Sailfish and a variety of hard fighting inshore species are the main attractions. Bara De Navidad, Mexico might be one of the best places in the world to spend the month of January. Water and air temperatures are in the high-70s and low-80s. Seas are usually calm and many species of game fish are very close to shore It's time for Patty and I to do a saltwater tackle research trip.

"Elementary Spey Casting School"
Saturday, January 22, 2005
This class is for right or left handed casters, and will deal with the most efficient methods of casting from the river left position.
It will cover Single Spey, Snake Roll & Snap-T casts with both
floating and sinking tip lines. Each class lasts 3 1/2-hours.

The instructors are: George Cook, Mark Bachmann & Brian Silvey.
No other spey casting school features a two student per instructor ratio
with instructors of this caliber.
You will get maximum help and nearly constant personal attention.
Spey casters of all experience levels are welcome. However this class
