Fly Tying Bobbins and Bobbin Accessories

The fly tying bobbin holds the thread spool and allows the thread to be fed out under precisely controlled tension. The perfect amount of tension facilitates the controlled application of tying materials to assemble a durable fly of exacting proportions. Too loose thread tension, results in materials which don't stay in place. Too much tension will result in annoying thread breakage. Bobbin barrels have to be glassy smooth or they will damage the thread. Ceramic barrels or barrel tips are smoothest and outlast brass or steel. They are worth the extra price. Bobbins should be easily adjustable to handle many different threads and fly sizes.

Spring tension bobbins like the ones offered below are the most proven. The spool is removed and the spring wires are squeezed together to increase tension or spread to decrease tension. Often thread spools are not uniform and may have to be trimmed or sanded to gain the smoothest operation from your bobbin.

A bobbin barrel which is free from wax from tying thread is easiest to thread. A ram rod cleaner is a must for keeping your bobbin barrel wax free. We suggest the Griffin Threader/Cleaner kit and spare threaders in case you break or lose one.

Griffin Ceramic Tip Bobbins
These four models will cover all your fly tying needs. They feature a ceramic insert ring, which is completely protected by the flared stainless steel barrel. Ceramic is smoother and more abrasion resistant than any metal. Stainless steel is more durable under impact and has more tensile strength. The inside barrel diameter is a full 1/16" for extra rigidity and easy threading. If you really want to set up a speed tying station put each color of thread in its own bobbin.

Supreme Ceramic Bobbin Overall Length 4" Tube Length 1 1/2" If you limit yourself to one bobbin, this is the one. Combining the durability of stainless steel tube with the ceramic insert and nylon beads, this is the workhorse of the tying industry.
