In most trout bearing waters, may fly populations are prolific and produce predictable hatches. Try the patterns listed below an hour prior before known hatches, as insects are moving from the substrate to the surface. These flies also make good searching patterns when banged along the bottom with split shot. Many of these flies can also be fished as dropper flies attached to larger buoyant dry flies.

Baetis Nymph
Baetis nymphs are swimmers.  They prefer weedy riffles and runs.  Use a "kick screen" in the morning.  If you find Baetis nymphs with wing pads that are very dark, chances are there will be a hatch during that day.  Nymphs will start getting restless in the morning.  This is a good time to pound the bottom with Baetis Nymph patterns.  Tied for the winter hatch. Mark Bachmann pattern.
