Glass Minnows

In most parts of the World's oceans, the majority of the fish are small. Small baitfishes are the basis of the food chain for many species of larger sport fish.

The Glass Minnow patterns listed below are tied on long shank hooks to prevent fouling. The body is Mylar, over-wrapped with clear monofilament for extra deep shine and durability. The eyes are hand painted, then epoxy coated. These flies have many uses in fresh water as well as salt water.

In Belize, Glass Minnows can form immense shoals along the shorelines of many offshore cayes. They are constantly under attack by tarpon, jacks, snappers and barracuda. Here the Olive Back and Grey Back patterns are very productive, especially for game fish in the 3 to 6 pound range.

These flies are also very effective for salmon that are feeding in-shore along kelp beds, on juvenile herring or candlefish. Blue Back, Blue/Green Back and Olive Back flies can all be effective at certain times.

The Blue Back pattern is effective on big trout that are feeding on juvenile Kokenee, in lakes.

The Gray Back pattern is productive on large reservoirs, where trout, stripers or large mouth bass feed on juvenile shad.

This selection of Glass Minnows represents most of the 2 1/2" to 3" long, transparent or silver side minnows found in shallow salt water. However, if you want to fish deeper water a Clouser Deep Eyed Minnow can turn the trick.

Clouser Deep Eyed Minnows

Minnows have a few key features. On most baitfish, the eyes are very prominent. Usually baitfish are very active, darting here and there in search of food. Action and flash, are features, which help sport fish to target their prey. Often natural camouflage makes the silhouette of many baitfishes nearly indistinguishable.

Bob Clouser developed these fast-sinking flies around the most prominent baitfish characteristics. The painted lead eyes are very realistic and gives the fly a darting minnow action. The long, sparse buck tail and flashabou wing gives a hazy, but flash silhouette. These flies are "killers" for many species of salt water fish such as jacks, permit and bonefish. They are also deadly for trout and bass in both lakes and streams that have good minnow populations.
