Lantern Butt Steelhead Flies

Fly du Jour Sandy Spider

The butts on these flies are tied with Edge Bright, which is a strip of light enhancing fluorescent plastic. This plastic strip is wrapped over a foundation of silver tinsel.  The rear edge of each wrap is left exposed.  The plastic gathers light through the wide side and emits it through the narrow edge.  The first steelhead flies that used this material were tied by Art Cohen for use on the Dean River. They were called Dean River Lanterns.  We applied Edge Bright to a couple of popular flies in our area, the Sandy Spider and Rick's Revenge. This variation of the Rick's Revenge became known as the Fly du Jour.  The Lantern Butt version of the Sandy Spider has been productive on our coastal rivers for Fall Chinook. Lantern Butts are especially effective during low light conditions or in turbid water.
