One day while guiding on the Deschutes River, my clients were fishing
the tail end of a caddis hatch.
As the bugs retired to the trees and bushes, the fish were still
rising but my clients couldn’t buy a fish.
Upon closer examination the fish were focused on the mattes of
dead caddis that were floating down the river.
It made sense, as the fish could get a full meal without having
to use excess energy chasing live caddis. I found the existing dead caddis patterns on the market overdressed, and took a couple dead caddis home to my vice for further examination. |

From a fish eye view the wing, hump and head are what stand out and cause the fish to strike. My dead caddis pattern is simple with a distinctive wing and nice hump that should be visible no matter how the fly lands. Natural dead caddis land every which way (upright, on the side, upside down etc…) on the water so it is not critical to have a fly that lands upright to be fishing effectively with this pattern.. The Silvey's Dead Caddis to works best in the afternoons on the Deschutes after the caddis are done laying their eggs, and we have great success fishing the fly in shadows under the trees. The pattern is also deadly on soft flat water where fish are sipping cripples and dead insects out of a foam line. Brian SilveySilvey’s Dead Caddis - Designer |

Silvey's Dead Caddis, Olive When fishing the Silvey’s Dead Caddis during a hatch, or in broken water, it’s a good idea to drop it behind a visible adult pattern to give you an idea of where the fly is. Set the hook on any rise close to your adult pattern. In the flat water and back eddies you can fish the fly alone and see it just fine. |
