Wally Adams with a Susitna River, Alaska rainbow. Wally Adams with a Hoh River steelhead

My name is Wally Adams, and I have been fly-fishing for over thirty years. I was lucky enough to start when I was 11 years old, and have been obsessed with fishing ever since.

Having  been fortunate to live in Alaska and the Northwest and guided in Washington, Alaska, and Chile, I’ve been passionate about chasing big rainbows and steelhead. Over the years, I developed the series of flies described below. These flies have been proven effective for trout and steelhead from Tierra Del Fuego to Alaska, from the Bogachiel and Sol Duc to the Skagit, from the Rogue and Deschutes to the Methow, and from the Kvichak and Kenai to the Klickitat

I wanted a fly that was easy to cast on light two-handers, and color schemes and actions that worked well in both clear and off color conditions. These are my “go-to” flies, and I have great confidence in them wherever and whenever I fish for big trout and steelhead. Give them a try, and I think they will prove themselves to you, too.

I developed this fly in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska, as a “change-up” fly. There were times when an all black leech, normally quite effective, did not produce the way I thought it should. By incorporating the green head, it was something the fish had not seen, and many times the response was enthusiastic, to say the least. Generally, this is not the first fly I tie on, but there are times when this fly gets crushed when nothing else does. A great fly to try when the fish have seen a lot, or when you are working over a player that has merely plucked at past offerings.

This fly was developed primarily for steelhead, both summer and winter-run. The blue head, contrasting with the black body, gave me a fly that incorporated an attractive color combination that steelhead responded very well to. It is both flashy and unobtrusive, a plus when it comes to wary summer fish. Also, as with all of the flies, the black body shows up well in off-color water, nor does it spook in clear water, allowing me a wider range of conditions in which to fish, and giving me confidence when conditions are less than ideal.

Actually the first fly developed in the series, this fly gives me confidence no matter where I use it. Developed primarily on the Kvichak and Klickitat, I believe that this fly represents a small lamprey. I noticed on the Kvichak that the smaller lampreys had a reddish/orange mouth area, thus the red head. Also, the fish seemed to respond better to a pattern that’s overall length was less that 4 inches. The sparse blue holographic tinsel was added for the benefit of summer steelhead, which seem to have a fondness for blue. The lighter weight barbell eyes allow the fly to gain depth, but still make casting them with the lighter weight spey rods easier. I also found that in many cases it was unnecessary to dredge the bottom, rather the fish would lift through the water column to take the fly. And, as many others have found, the articulated style gave a very desirable swimming action to the fly.
